Fewer non-heteros will feel the need to stay closeted or turn into self-haters and homophobes themselves when strong rational homosexuals take over the wheel and tell 'gays' ...."yes, we want you along for the journey....but you're no longer driving."
I'm sure that many of those posting who are making the claim of being 'happy ex-gays' are not 'happy' because they're now supposidly, and miraculously, not "gay'..... they're happy (relieved would be a better word) because they are approval seekers who have now been able to fool (there is a no more accurate word) their way back into the welcoming (conditional) and loving (conditional) arms of the 'good tribe', the self-proclaimed 'right kind of people'. Yep, 'fool' is the perfect word.
I am an exgay and I am happy. Just as it is your rights to be gay, bisexual or whatever you want to be (which is not my business)… it is TOTALLY MY RIGHTS to be an exgay. Why can’t you just respect people like me for what we have decided for OUR OWN lives. No one has forced me into the exgay lifestyle. It is my CHOICE. Respect others IF you want to be respected! Stop bullying people just because they are different from you or refuse to believe what you believe…
@EdmundLawrenceSmith Good for you! You do have the right to call yourself whatever you want. But what is Ex Gay? A change on the surface, or does it go deeper? To who are you attracted now? Men or women? One of the reasons it such a controversial subject is because it seems impossible to change that part of your personality. And of course the fact that many formal participants say its harmful. The succcess rate is low, and those ex gay organisations scheme with numbers they just cant support.
@EdmundLawrenceSmith Hey, if you want to be exgay, that's your choice and I respect the fact that you are respectful about it. I'm just wondering if you are truly "ex gay" in the sense that your homosexual attractions are completely gone, or if you've just repressed them to such an extent that you are able to live a heterosexual life. From what I've seen, even ex-gay ministers end up realizing down the road that it's not something that can be "cured" and is just an innate part of who they are.
what are you talking about!?! when i was at a camp for ex-gays sports was one of the biggest things that helped me! im an ex-gay and the most feared wrestler at my high school!
If you saw the movie MAURICE, when the main character was worried about his sexual attraction to another man, he went to a doctor. The doctor's advice was to walk around with a gun. The movie was set in the UK in a country setting. I had to laugh at the 'prescription' the doctor gave him.
I agree actyally some sports activities open up the door to same sex opportunity. They have culture confused with masculinity and or sexual orientation!
And, playing sports will help make you hott! Seriously -I'm part of a growing group of men who love men. We're called g0ys (spelled w. a zer0). G00GLE g0ys for more info. Anyhow -we're all about respect and lots of our members are conservative, masculine guys -many amBIsexual with families & samesex feelings. They really want answers & we have answers --stuff that frames masculinity in health, respect & friendship as a basis for love. We also have well developed theology with DETAILED answers!
I agree, sports as 'masculine' is a cultural construct. This form of therapy seems weak. However, some people who WANT therapy addressing sexual orientation change or to diminish SSA have the right to seek it. Some people DO experience change. There are a preponderance of examples to put that beyond question Absolute, superlative, and fatalistic statements of immutable sexual orientation are utterly disingenuous.
That's ridiculous. I've spent a lot of time in locker rooms and it didn't make ME straight - or do things like Melissa Huckaby, that guy who cut the model's fingers off, or the latest child molesting female hetero teacher in Washington. Yet those straights DO those THINGS. Fucking breeders!!!
Lol ex-gay therapy is funny. Toying with ex-gay's and their "forbidden attractions" is funnier. Trust me, I've tried it and I can tell you there is no better feeling than provoking an "ex-gay" into showing us how little he really has changed.
I had always wanted to do that myself. Unfortunately, I was trapped int the middle of nowhere, where I never got to meet any. Now, that I'm free, I no longer have the looks to distract them. LOL
The only reason people think that football and hockey are 'straight sports' is that it is so full of homophobes that the gay guys stay in the closet. There are plenty of gay guys on those teams - they're just not 'out'.
Lol that makes me laugh, make the guys play sports with hot sweaty guys around them...That will make them straight alright. Ex-gay therapists are Losers.
Maybe they should just bring out Rosie O'donnell naked! ha ha. I use the term fag all the time on youtube as a way of insulting ppl. I don't really think they are gay it's just an expression.
Well, I don't know about you being able to beat up homophobes but you certainly do sound gay. "I'am a gay and I love beating up homophobes" Who talks like that? Do you realize how much of pussy that makes you like bro? No wonder a big chunk of hetro dudes still look down on us :/
LOL, I'm gay and I've beat up plenty of homophobes. I've also beat up plenty of bitchy fags who tried to throw a drink on me because they were jealous of my boyfriend or trying to grab my dick. I have no time for people who are going to push themselves or their homophobia on me.
they tried electric shock treatment to the penis back in the 70's and that did'nt work so how do they think that playing sport with a load of buff dudes is gonna work. morons
I have a cousin who's gay and was on every sports team and is a ranked golfer even though his family would have preferred that he pursue cultural interests!
Ex-gay is so sad. What happens is that gays and lesbians in ultra conservative communities are under so much pressure that they'd try anything to get out of their homosexuality, even complete quack therapies like this sports crap. Society and religion can be so cruel and dehumanising.
This is a fantastic video. Who in the hell came up with that idea of sports to make someone straight? Sara Palin? LOL Just kidding... However, I believe a person can live their life the way they want. You accept yourself, you are happy, this is your life, then go for it. 5 star on this video and on my favorite!
Nice work Billy - excellent post. I, too am a gay man that doesn't fit the stereotype. I hope to one day have as much influence as you have, especially to kids struggling with their own acceptance. It was a rough journey for me but I'm glad I did it. I also read your book a while ago and it's
This is stupid. My brother is a year younger than me (20), and he's gay. He plays for the top rugby club in our province and expected to go proffessional. Any notion that sports going to 'cure' you from being gay is fucking ludicris. There's nothing to be 'cured' from.
A REAL cure for anything would not require so much effort behind any promotion. The cure itself would generate global attention faster than we can imagine.
I have been out of the exgay movement for almost a year now and I was talking to my dad tonight and he commented about how much nicer I am now that i am out of that "mind-controlling cult." well put Dad.
ahw, thats so great that your dad said that^^. so did your parents want you to go there and did they cnage their minds afterwords? or did you go there yourself, srry if im too curious:P.
The problem tends to be that the macho jock gays don't come out of the closet as much as the gays with more in the middle or "effeminate" interests. Things are changing but almost all these guys had to come out AFTER they left their teams, due to homophobia.
Even though stereotypes are clearly offensive sometimes, I like to study why we think the way we think.
I think it has much to do with the fact that ur religous affiliation usually comes from where you grow up,not something you choose... initially. So the way we think is just a reaction to what weve been taught by where we live.
yeah in my social studies i realised we all got stereotypes and pre-judged thoughts in our head, no one can deny it. what i makes a diffrence, is weather you open your mind to attacking those stereotypical thoughts in your mind, or give in to them and see them as reality. changing people's stereotypes is a loooooong journey, but worth while
I would agree that this is completely ludacris.... I am gay, and I have been on football, wrestling, baseball, and track teams ... as are 2 others on my team I later found out were gay. It was, in some ways, one of the few activities where I never really even saw many women.....

The so-called "ex-gays" problem isn't their desire for other men, it's their f**ked-up religion(s) telling them their sexual orientation is somehow a "choice" and they "chose" wrong. They need to get over their internalized homophobia and get over their obsession with mythological belief-systems.

I think he more wants to be associated with the likes of Coulter and Hannity than he does Bennett and Chambers. Either way, I think his plans are about to be cancelled, judging from these recent revelations about him.
The way I see it, how do these "ex-gay" leaders expect potential customers to get all excited about sports, Nascar and female mud-wrestling, when they can't even get into it themselves??
From what I see, all they do is rant online about homosex, and go to Disney World....with other men.
exactly, if those people think tis possible to change your sexuality, thn i dare them to turn themselves gay for just a while, they can turn themselves straight again anyway:P. i dare them to try hehe:P
Very good point. I am going to remember that as a line to use. If it is a choice, then a person can choose to go gay or straight at any time. So why not change and become gay, try it out, and go back to being straight. Nothing lost.
You can be an "ex-gay" about as easily as you can be an "ex-black" or an "ex-tall" person.

I don't know too much about this aspect of ex-gay therapy other than it is recommended by some therapists.
While I support anyone wanting to be ex-gay and encourage whatever works for some - I personally don't see the benefits either.
I might suppose the idea is to meet and interact with men in solely non-sexual bonding, affections and physical interactions.
I could see that helping some but otherwise it might be over-rated in terms of the goals here.
Interesting.
