It is entirely possible that Solid wire can kink if not properly maintained and break or if a large fish is spinning it can kink and break. This is not the same as cutting fishing wire. Chances are high they just said that for the show for effect, after the wire kinked and broke. You can kink and break fishing wire with a few fingers, to put it in perspective.  Not the same.
