I think two of the biggest reforms we can do to help create wealth in the investment sector would be to Libralize Roth IRAs, and do that in tandem with a phasing out of social security. Allow people to put in as much as they want, and allow people to take out as much as they want tax-free. This would help everyone, including the poor and minorities, generate a rather enourmous amount of wealth and would, hence, sharply reduce the income gap in America.
The capital gains tax needs to be eliminated. Taxing capital is the stupidest thing ever. All federal taxes other than a low, flat income tax should be eliminated.

The top 50 hedge fund managers took home $29B and paid a lower rate than regular wage earners(!) Worse, when their mortgage-backed-securities based bets went bad, the government came to their rescue. Talk about a rigged system. These ultra-rich managers are not even asked to pay their fair share to clean up their own mess! The tax code has to be changed to capture a larger percentage of the hedge fund manager's obscene profits.
As you point out, there are other choices than just changing the capital gains tax. One idea: perhaps the capital gains tax on individuals should be graduated. Capital gains above, say $5M in a single year, could be taxed at a significantly higher rate. So these guys bringing home $50M bonuses would pay more, while the average investor would be unaffected.
Even better, why don't we have a graduated negative capital gains tax, so those that have the largest capital gains get the largest bonuses straight from the government. (That is effectively what is happening now anyway).

What this video seems to overlook is that, while people making more than 250K DO pay more taxes, they have a much bigger source of discretionary income (for investment and such) than middle, lower-middle and working class people, who have to spend most or all of whatever they get to survive.

Bush cut all tax brackets. For example the lowest wage bracket was increased from 11% to 15% under Clinton. Bush passed tax cuts when he took office that reduced the lowest wage bracket from 15% to 10%. So, any guesses on what happens when the Bush tax cuts expire?

CG taxes don't affect 401K's since the money grows tax free and is taxed as ordinary income on withdrawal (video maker's mistake). Also, those hedge fund guys made short term CG's which are taxes at ordinary income rate. The 15% rate only applies to stocks held more than 1 year (Barak's mistake). Gibson is the only smart guy in the room LOL
First, I'm assuming that was a typo - you meant if you "raise" CG taxes, people pull out of the market right?
Second, if you raise CG taxes, people would tend to hold on to their stocks longer in order to avoid the higher tax, which is the opposite of "pulling out of the market".
But we agree on the thesis - raising taxes slows the economy and motivates people to do things to avoid them, and that reduces revenues, just like Gibson said.

obama needs to study the laffer curve. 15% is the lowest the capital gains tax has been, yet 04-07 brought in MORE inflation-adjusted revenue in any consecutive four year period stretching back to the second world war. he cares more about stopping rich people from "abusing" the tax benefits of smart investing instead of doing his job, which is to assure the welfare of the country. it is in the country's best interest to leave the tax at 15% - WE BRING IN MORE MONEY. I am praying the President re-evaluates his new proposed tax brackets. As it now sits the middle class Americans making $58.000 or a bit more will have to pay what breaks down to $500.00 a month in taxes. I don't know about you but we cannot afford that. We are not rich. President Obama needs to raise that tax bracket up to at least $70.000 a year. My family has supported President Obama and the democratic party. I pray they realise we are not rich and cannot afford a tax hit like that one.

I think two of the biggest reforms we can do to help create wealth in the investment sector would be to Libralize Roth IRAs, and do that in tandem with a phasing out of social security. Allow people to put in as much as they want, and allow people to take out as much as they want tax-free. This would help everyone, including the poor and minorities, generate a rather enourmous amount of wealth and would, hence, sharply reduce the income gap in America.

The top 50 hedge fund managers took home $29B and paid a lower rate than regular wage earners(!) Worse, when their mortgage-backed-securities based bets went bad, the government came to their rescue. Talk about a rigged system. These ultra-rich managers are not even asked to pay their fair share to clean up their own mess! The tax code has to be changed to capture a larger percentage of the hedge fund manager's obscene profits.

As you point out, there are other choices than just changing the capital gains tax. One idea: perhaps the capital gains tax on individuals should be graduated. Capital gains above, say $5M in a single year, could be taxed at a significantly higher rate. So these guys bringing home $50M bonuses would pay more, while the average investor would be unaffected.

Even though Obama says he wants out of the war, he doesn't really get a choice. That is entirely up to Congress, and the fact of the matter is, right now we are in a recession and nothing is more profitable then war, and history has shown that. Not to mention all of the oil that we want, and "finding Osama". I'm not a big fan of war, so don't get me wrong, but I'm just saying we probably won't be out of this war any time soon.

What this video seems to overlook is that, while people making more than 250K DO pay more taxes, they have a much bigger source of discretionary income (for investment and such) than middle, lower-middle and working class people, who have to spend most or all of whatever they get to survive.
The bottom 40% might not pay taxes directly, but they do pay out of their wages. Ask anyone who's ever worked for a living.

Obama wants let the Bush tax cuts expire, an across the board tax increase for everyone. He wants to cut taxes on 95% of working Americans? Check your math, 40%of working Americans don't pay taxes. And his $250k or more is down to $150. Obama also plans to up the dividend tax, capital gains tax and bring back the inheritance tax. If you have enough money to leave your children something, own a house, or have a retirement nest egg, you are part of Obamas rich and need to be taxed more.

Bush cut all tax brackets. For example the lowest wage bracket was increased from 11% to 15% under Clinton. Bush passed tax cuts when he took office that reduced the lowest wage bracket from 15% to 10%. So, any guesses on what happens when the Bush tax cuts expire?

Why is it I can't "write off" my work transportation and OTHERS can "write off" a very expensive vacation as a "business trip"? How about AIG? Planning ahead:
If Obama wins, I've already directed my lawyers to liquidate my company, laying off 150 people as of inauguration day. It's my company, I created it and I can dissolve it. They can get Obama's health plan and collect their "tax break" check. I fully plan on lowering my income below the $250K level, sit back and retire. I'm not funding this guys plans.

CG taxes don't affect 401K's since the money grows tax free and is taxed as ordinary income on withdrawal (video maker's mistake). Also, those hedge fund guys made short term CG's which are taxes at ordinary income rate. The 15% rate only applies to stocks held more than 1 year (Barak's mistake). Gibson is the only smart guy in the room LOL

First, I'm assuming that was a typo - you meant if you "raise" CG taxes, people pull out of the market right?
Second, if you raise CG taxes, people would tend to hold on to their stocks longer in order to avoid the higher tax, which is the opposite of "pulling out of the market".
But we agree on the thesis - raising taxes slows the economy and motivates people to do things to avoid them, and that reduces revenues, just like Gibson said.

We live in a small one story house in a suburb of Long Beach, ca. we drive mid range fuel efficient cars (mazda, acura, ect). We don't even ever go on vacations.
