  • your spark plugs are loose and about to blow. It may be just one plug loose. Pull the COP's and check all 8 plugs. my 03 fx4 supercrew blew number 3 plug out and lucky for me it had just got loose because it was not torqued to 12 lbs. It idnt hurt my threads in the head so I put it back in and torqued and all is fine. I found no. 2 and no.5 plug was also loose. tigting all to 12 lbs or just good snug tight. If not plugs will blow out and possible mess the head up.

  • sounds like exhaust leak, thats what i had on my bronco.

  • DEATH RATTLE!!!!! lol

  • @spk9grsch

The 5.4l modular two-valve engine was built in the Windsor plant, hence it can be called a Windsor.

  • my truck did the same thing. it ran out of oil then started making this noise. engine is done once you hear that. had to get a new one.

  • my f-250 is doing the exact same noise i was told it could be a cracked flywheel but no im thinkin maybe a bad piston ....did u run it without oil?

  • i have a 2001 5.4L supercrew an it has never made this noise...i've had a manifold tick sound but that was jus the gasket leakin, which is fixed.....where is the noise comin from ???

  • if money is not an issue I would tune that engine up and if its showing a service engine light get the codes off the computer

  • How are you so sure that this was due to a spun bearing if you didn't actually teardown and inspect the motor?

  • fuckin 5.4's ... nothing but manifold problems and broken off spark plugs

  • @leafsrule16 theres only a spark plug removal problem on the 04-05 5.4liter 3v and there is a very simple way to get broken plugs out.

  • @iwanaGoFast2010 what is it? my buddy had to have his truck towed to the ford dealer where they took off the whole head .. 4.6's are far more reliable motors and old 5.0's are A LOT easier to work on...

  • @leafsrule16 what is it? it's a spun out rod bearing

  • @iwanaGoFast2010 i'd take a 4.6 over this, even though there not real powerfull they run for a long time and there pretty decent on gas

  • @leafsrule16 agreed the 4.6 is a great engine but its virtually identical to the 5.4 just a smaller displacement. if i am correct i believe the only difference in the block is different bore sizes

  • @f100stroker347 yeah they work alright though for the size of them too, my dad has a 4.6 in his ford truck and i drove a grand marquis for awhile and there strong motors to say the least

  • this is the result of poor ownership. ran low on oil for too long. these tritons are picky as to where the oil level is....if its down 1/2 litre (still above add line) you will get little ticks in the top end. if your beyond that, those ticks turn into a rattle. you're starving the engine of oil. lose that film between the crank and bearing and its metal on metal...instantly spin a bearing like in this video.

  • preety sure thats a triton not a windsor, they stoped putting wndsors in there trucks in 96, preety sure it's not an exhaust leak it probally has the same problem that the 04 and 05 f-150's had i don't know what was all wrong but i do know it costs about 2800 to fix and only an experienced mechanic can fix it

  • Its a Ford, its not supposed to last 100,000 miles, so, thats a rod knock.

  • @Motorfordtoyota herp derp...why do i got a expedition with over 300,000kms with no engine work done other then replaced alternator. starting to get piston slap but still has its power...ive never seen a 5.7 hemi or 5.3 chevy do this

  • @oilfield666 Yeah, you Dont see GMs, or Chryslers doing that, Nissans either. But a Toyota, Like our 2001 Sequoia and my 88 4runner, will far outlast a Ford. Not to mention the Majority of Toyotas are built, and desighned in AMERICA. My 4Runner has 262,101 miles on it and runs fine. Only its old age causes it troubles (things like rotted exhaust, rotted vacuum lines, and leaky gaskets) and the only thing EVER done to the engine on our Sequoia other than oil changes is change the timing belt!

  • @Motorfordtoyota the biggest problem with the triton engines IMO is exhaust manifold gaskets blowing out, everyone ive worked on had the rear manifold bolts sheered off. ive tried using different brand studs. the last 5.4l i did is using bolts (not studs) to hold manifold inplace, thats in my buddies truck and he is still running the piss out of the engine with no leaks....i was amazed the bolts lasted. i dont know about the sequoia outlasting the 5.4l....then again it depends who is driving

  • Exhaust manifild rotted out and leaks.

  • spark plug problem= remove the old plugs after a good soaking in wd40 or other lubricant replace with the NGK one piece wich will never break off and has a new thread desighn also...but many of these blow outs are a direct result of the cam phaser issue as when the timing goes out due to the cam phaser you get backfiring and miss fires wich shake or force the plug out of its thread

  • @G2203V54

no cam phasers. cam phasers were introduced in later models. spark plugs were replaced. its a spun bearing.

  • @MegaMarkho my cousin has a 2004. and at any excelleration it almost sounds like a leaking exhaust but its not. it sounds louder at the passanger side. even at idle it sounds like a clunking sound like its off timing. Is this a bad cam phaser im guessing?

  • @G2203V54 Every aspect of your response is wrong.

  • @G2203V54 1 piece plugs were failing in 3v engines and 3v engines only...2v plug problems were idiots over torquing the plugs and stripping threads. 3v had cam phaser issues due to lack of regular oil changes, oil pressure runs the phasers.

these are very reliable engines if taken care of. N/A people have pushed the 5.4l 2v beyond 500hp. with some boost 1000+HP

  • nothing but bad oil and oil filter ...fucks the pressure in the cam phasers wich fucks the timing...many of the newer 3valve do it straight of factory floor...because ford the cheap bastards dont want you to know that these triton engines need a 0-20w oil.all you needed to do was engine flush and de carb engine drop oil new factory oil filter and 0-20w-i picked up 12bhp on the dyno just after changing to the thinner oil also after about 500kms my noise went away and have never heard it since!!

  • @G2203V54

this model does not have cam phasers, they have hydraulic lash adjusters which were replaced without fixing the problem- spun bearing.

  • @MegaMarkho Hydraulic lash adjusters and phasers are two completely different components. The 3V still has the same lash adjusters as the 2V.

  • @G2203V54 Every aspect of your response is wrong

  • I would RUN, NOT WALK to your nearest dealer and sell it as fast as possible. If they refuse, strip it sell it for the rest of the vehicle for parts. Sounds like the engine is about to blow at any minute.

  • FORDS!!! LOL!!!

  • as rediculous as this sounds you may have blew a spark plug out of the head it has happened to me. twice. I cant tell from the video but it sure sounds like my truck did... Twice.

  • dustin889, ive have now heard about this spark plug problem, i have a 2003 and hear its on 97-2003 ford tritons,im scared for my f250, what did you do to fix it?

  • After two helicoils blew out , new heads about 700 a piece . If it gives you any warning at all it will sound like an exhaust leak from the manifold that gets louder and louder it's actually the plug moving up and down in the threads if you do notice it right away maybe all you would need to do is tighten the plug but be very careful there is only about 3 threads holding them in. Good luck

  • man brother, ford should pay for it all, i could try to tighten the sparks but that might strip them (even the smallest movement) and speed up the process of blowing!!! damned i guess!!! thanks brotha!!!

  • yup its a rod knock. sold her off.

  • I was going to guess rod or spun bearing. Sucks man.

  • MegaMarkho, how did you sell a truck with it knocking like that, i dont know anyone that would buy it like that

  • @therockkkkher craigslist and ebay know more people than you. All info was given at sale, which was basically that it needed a new motor. Rest of truck was near mint and sold for a mere 3500$ for a lariat supercrew

  • sounds like a rod knocking to me. buddy bought an s10 with one knocking and we blew it up just for fun cutting donuts

  • Sounds like it may be piston slap
