Simply stunning.I've been lucky enough to see Elkie 3 times now and from the 1st time,in 1977 to just 2 years ago she has only improved. And Lilac Wine IS Elkie.
Thank you for posting - she does this so much grace. Her voice is amazing. Jeff Buckley - gives it a different feel. I love Jeffs' but this reminds me of the first time i heard the song. And I live in Manchester, and used to go to Bookbinders, family of Elkie I think!! Elkie - if you ever read this, salt beef bagel has your nake on it, or chopped herring. Manchester!!!! Long before Oasis etc... we had bloody good music! Elkie proves that. x
Why so much talk about chart success?... let's hope that's not the measure of a formidable singer... plus that's a relative term. She NEVER charted in the US. And let's see if her version of 'Purple Rain' does anything on the UK or ANY OTHER chart. But i'm sure Elkie fans will say "...it's the best version ever." Blah Blah Blah.
@roninkode You telling people to grow UP. LOL !! You seem to be a sad stalker. There are lots of artist on youtube I do not like. I don't go there. Maybe unlike you, I have a life. Saying that Elkie's fans will support her, is stating the obvious. Go get a life !!!
@slickwillie1947 i only told Eamonn20A to grow up. He attacks anyone who has an opinion or disagrees with him. I'm not a stalker, YouTube email alerts me when someone replies to my comment. But i would hope you know this. I have a nice life thank you. By opening up to what is unknown is how one grows. Do you insult people continuously in your life? That's not good. I was talking about a Celine Dion version being supported. Thank you for your insults, you actually don't seem slick at all.
@roninkode We all like what we like! and chart success means nothing in taste! USA has a massive country scene, music wise..... not my type, folk like that are portrayed as hill billy types over here, unless you know! Like THE way use capitals. Some feelings behind them I think! We can all sing a song, some do better, an some appeal to more than others. But I defend anyone who likes a tune, a song, and is allowed to express his ir her feeling about! Elkie Brooks is art of British Music - x
@19davo66 I agree, chart success is nothing. The people attacking my comments site chart success as the reason it's better. i don't agree, that's it. It's only my opinion. Elkie's cool, but i just prefer other versions of this song. i would have preferred a slightly different arrangement, her strong voice clashes with the strings, maybe some EQ would've fixed it. She is without a doubt a British artist, never denied that. I agree, all are entitled to have an opinion, there's no right or wrong.
@shyathena34 Like Nina , but the Buckley version is streets behind Elkie's version. Elkie's version is the ONLY version to have chart success. A GREAT version.
Horrible, cheesy orchestration. I'm sure all of you would love Celine Dion doing this song too, huh? Nina and Jeff had the sentiment of the song correct. And the Melua version was very intimate. This is not a big 'showy' tune as this version has made it. Not personal at all. Yeah, she has a strong voice - she doesn't have to use it ALL in one go for this song. For this song the sensitivity of the performance is more important than the singer's 'strength.' She's showcasing herself, not the song.
@roninkode Melua's voice is sooooo boring. The Buckley version is a poor cover of the Simone's version, it drags. Elkie's voice nails this song. Period.
@roninkode Saw Elkie sing this at "Ronnie Scotts " jazz club in London, with just keyboards. FANTASTIC. Her voice is magnificent. Nina, and Jeff do nice covers, Melua kills this song. Elkie owns it.
@roninkode Listening to the Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley, Katie Melua and this one in succession, I agree that the Elkie Brooks version feels over produced and too dependent on the backing orchestra. I couldn't even finish listenting to it (or Katie Melua FWIW). For me, it's Nina Simone all the way, although I also enjoy the Jeff Buckley version. And if Celine Dion or some X factor goon did a version, I'm sure it would be a smash hit, much the same way McDonalds sell so many burgers ;)
@smacl6301 This is the second comment you have left , making the same negative noises. If you don't like this version why do you kep coming back to listen to it. Elkie Brooks vocals does NOT depend on any orchestra. Any idiot with half decent hearing would know that.
@Eamonn20a Just because two people agree, doesn't make them the same person. The comments are different. Grow up.
I believe people from a specific region of the world like Elkie. That's why they know this version and "defend" it so venomously. Of course she has a big voice & can sing, but the intimacy is lost a bit. The Nina version captures a sadness like no other rendition does. That's my opinion. No harm in that. No need to think your version is the only version allowed to exist. Grow up
@roninkode eamonn 20a the intimacy is not lost at all you just prefer another version where as i prefer this version and your word usage is wrong it is not venomously you should have said vehemently but maybe your from US you people are still learning the nuances of our language good luck
@skababooshka No, i meant venomous - to be filled with a noxious substance, not vehement. To be vehement would be fine, that shows passion. Most people attacking my opinions are filled with angry, negative, acidic venom. That same destructive element is why there's so little sensitivity left in the "civilized" world. I believe i have a fine grasp of "your" language. Maybe you should check your grammar.( 'maybe YOUR from US'. -- ?) Your entire comment is one long, bad sentence. Try using a period.
@roninkode I can assure you that i am not filled with any acidic venom. I just feel, and still do believe that vehemently is a better choice of word, for it suggests intense passion which best describes followers or supporters of a cause. You use the same word as an adverb, adjective and as a noun, hardly gives you the qualification to criticize someone else' s grammar. By the way i am from Scotland.I hope your happy with my grammar this time.
love the music and what a voice! not many female singers of today can sing like Elkie! Very lucky to have grown up in the 70s and 80s because music was so much better then...
Many thanks to everyone who has made positive comments on this video/song, and sorry I am a bit tardy in getting back to some of you. I must have a 'You Tube Day' and catch up with all the great feedback I have received. In the meantime, many thanks - all of you.
@mymagnoliatree Elkie is a rare precious gem.. Manchester girl, so not too far from me. Sorry haven't got back before on this, but inundated with comments right now..
Music is a bit too loud. This song is sung best with little music, and the singer's voice doing most of the work: portraying emotions pouring out like heavy wine spilling over from a broken glass ... staining the satin of her life ...
I've heard other renditions which I thought were done better. Nevertheless, a great song and an awesome singer ...thanks for posting ... it's been a treat ...
totally agree. i have never seen Elkie, but love this song so much
