I think what added to the uniqueness of the 80's was a fresh wave of 'New Wave' music and alot of the movies focused on teens, which made it fresh too. A lot of the movies from the 70's seemed more adult oriented (albeit with nudity too, remember that?! lol) I do miss them 80s though definitely. :(
@TheDairynn It can be, just go back and replay all the old songs we used to love XD then Search the artists and discover similar ones from the same time we didn't listen to before and Viola!!! new musical choices XD
I was born in the 80's and I am a total 80's music lover.... and the movies for teens were so much more awesome. We had Matt Dillon & Keanu... They have Justin and Zack.. Poor clueless things!!
the 80s were a WAY more fun time for kids to grow up in. Of course, there were bad things happening in the world, there always has been always will be, but those times seem much more light hearted. Maybe it's just because I was a kid, 5-15 years old. Still, shit is so serious now. Paranoid and fearful. And pop culture has really become stale and boring, unimaginitive and insulting to our collective intelligence (i.e. "reality" TV)...
@dreekd80 i hear ya on that man.i had so much more fun in the 80"s...the sad thing is we will never have cool times like that again..i miss..at least we have songs like this 2 bring us back.
I love this movie and wish I was alive when it first came out. Im in love with the storyline and the acting was good. Still funny how they showed it on Family Guy. lol
Not even 6 A.M. here and I am listening to this song thinking about my teenage years that are long behind me. Man.....what an awesome ride it was! I didn't think so back then. My middle son just turned 18 and is partying downstairs with his friends. (Still) Once you hit 18 life really starts flying by. Then you younger ones will be the ones watching YouTube videos 20 years from now remembering. :)
Everyone, please just let me have this one movie to myself!!! Best movie of all time. I just turned sixteen on oct. 7th and all I need is this one guy to look in my direction. If I can get at least 75 thumb ups, I will tell him how I feel and ask him out =))
@brandi2cute4u001 You are too young. Grow up some more and find out what life is about before thinking some stupid guy who you won't be with in the future.
@3itchontherise Cusak was in this movie. He played one of the nerds Anthony Michael Hall goes to the night he has that chick passed out in Jake's dad's car...
Jake Ryan. Every girl I knew wanted Jake Ryan. LOL this movie was just ever girls dream hot guy in red sports car . This movie was so cool to me when I was a little girl. I so wanted to be older and going to partys and driveing a car and meeting me a Jake Ryan . And for laughs haveing some china man falling out of my tree. This was such a great movie in all ways really caught your mind and made you dream.
Love this song!! Gawd did I have a huge CRUSH on Jake..Simply YUMMY! They should redo 16 candles..alot of ppl never seen it!! Gotta love" Long Duck Dong" as well haha!!
Seems a lot of people think this isnt a romantic song cuz of the "Deceive" line...but if you know all the lyrics he talks about falling like the rain and rising and falling...
I always laugh at the fact that this song accompanies an incredibly romantic moment since the words are anything but romantic.....love the song and the movie anyway
@grandhip John Hughes knew how to use just the right parts of the songs to get the proper effect he needed for his movies. I think with this song it fades to black after the kiss during the instrumental bridge. Plus, he gave a lot of awesome groups back then a wider audience.
@grandhip : you have to listen to the message of the lyrics. it has a bittersweet message... the word "deceive" actually means that he is hiding his feelings. it does not convey the meaning of deceit. if you listen to the rest of the lyrics "...would you SUSPECT my emotions wandering? do not want to part with this anymore..." the message there is that he doesn't want to let go of the feelings he has for that person. so, the song is really an emotional expression of heartbreak and love.
One of my ALL TIME favorite movies. I love this song in the movie. I am still a fan of the movie even after over 25 years. I was 14 when this movie came out and I still get that same feeling every time I see it. Totally Awesome.
@dejolo I know how you feel, i was about 16 when this movie came out and to this day, John Hughes movie's give me that feeling everytime! There was just something about that time in life, everything was so incredible,,they say when you pass from this earth that you go back to the time you were happiest, so i'm going to hold on to that^^
oh how my parents loved the Tompson Twins they fell in love to this song - thanks to them I love synth pop and some mighty hand brought me here - but I like this somehow and if you also like dance/synth/pop then you might also like my award winning song "TOUCH" by my band "Magical Mystery Crew". Just click on my name below to watch the video. thanks!
i remember wearing my drakkar cologne chasing girls wearing guess mini skirts when this song came out.i love 16 candles and the thompson twins.todays music sucks next to this.in 25 years no one will glorify the plain white tees lol
so i dediced to sleep in the mini tramolean just 4 fun
so i decieded to play this song and he said u know this takes me back to when i was 16...i smiled and i said well dad maybe this will remind me of when i am sixteen
Hughes directed a winner with this one, guess that's why "pretty in pink" though a good film, can't hold a candle to "sixteen". he wrote it, but didn't direct it. but his choices of song coincided with the scenes perfectly, from the ending (pure directoral perfection), to the face-to-face with Sam and Jake at the gym (classic! i would have died) the light subject matter takes away from derogatory slurs (asian, "faggot"), and race & class stereotypes to combine comedy with romance. love it.

I do have a test today, that wasn't bullshit. It's on European socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European. I don't plan on being European. So who gives a crap if they're socialists? They could be fascist anarchists, it still doesn't change the fact that I don't own a car.

Sheer 80's pleasure & joy from a wonderful John Hughes 80's movie, I just wish I could jump into a time machine and relive a decade that holds so many precious memories like these xXx
OK, I was a teenager when I went through the 1980's. There will never be another time like it, just as there was never one before it. These songs- Thompson Twins, Berlin, 'Till Tuesday, and their music, can and never will be replicated. Like "If You Were Here", many songs were haunting, and still are. I still like some modern music, but I will never enjoy any like I do the 80's.
This song seriously makes me cry, its so beautiful and reminds me of high school days all the way back in 2007 when I had a crush on someone. Thompson Twins forever!!!
This song is not done by the Thompson Twins (or at least not THIS version from 16 Candles anyway; I don't know about if they covered a TT original with this recording) - It is OMD (Orchestral Maneuvers In the Dark)
@UpRoaryus ...That's what the jacket on my soundtrack cassette says, anyways. But I remember looking for the song as a single in the 80's and thinking it WAS the Thompson Twins but there wasn't any listing for it under that band in the big yellow catalog at Tower Records. I didn't actually want the soundtrack to the film, but I wanted that ONE song, and it seemed to be the only way to get it, so I snagged a cassette. Also remember I was surprised to see OMD as the credited artist. too
@UpRoaryus Or maybe I'm just confused and thinking of "If you leave" from Pretty in Pink - Although I don't actually HAVE that soundtrack. ... I might be going senile a bit early... =) Whatever.... Now I have to find the damn cassette in the basement somewhere and see for myself
@UpRoaryus The Thompson Twins DID do If You Were Here--you're probably thinking of If You Leave, by Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark, from Pretty In Pink.
this is such a great song, enough said and 80s rocked my world

Baseball had Babe Ruth. Literature had William Shakespeare. Art had Vincent Van Gogh. The 1980s had John Hughes. Enough said.

@UpRoaryus No this IS Thompson Twins

@UpRoaryus The Thompson Twins DID do If You Were Here--you're probably thinking of If You Leave, by Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark, from Pretty In Pink.
