Nobody but nooo-body does reeds like Cavaille-Coll. This is a great interpretation of the organ symphony, good tempi, harmonic shading and dynamic contrasts. It's all too easy to imbue this piece with a little too much grandeur, and this misstep is deftly avoided.
My GAWD! Is that a barn-burner or what??? You need an organ of this caliber to play the No. 3. It is one of my favorite pieces and this is just a great rendition.
WWWWOOOOWWW WHAT !! ! ! CHANNEL, MEGA HIPER SUPER !!! VERY VERY SO MUCH THANKS ALOT, DE PELOS,,,,, GREETING FROM MEXICO ATTA. PETER VON MUSKOSMINGM ORGAN MENTAL- BRAKE DOWN ! ! ! ! ! !
AWESOME MUSIC......simply awe inspiring!! The organ does get too powerful for the orchestra though but still awesome!! The pipe organ was, is and will always be the KING OF INSTRUMENTS!
The sound of the French-romantic organs...the best organ sound in the world. I´m a Dutchman and I life in Katwijk aan Zee. We have a organ that is built by the Dutch firm Van Den Heuvel and this organ have exactly the same sound as this majestic organ in St. Ouen.

This recording is with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra from Norway, with conductor Mariss Jansons. It can be found at Amazon by searching for "Saint-Saëns: Symphonie No. 3 "avec orgue"; Violonkonzert No. 3".
Best organ on EARTH! Beautiful recording, too. Would someone please re regulate bottom C of the bombarde so that it resonates as keenly as the others? On every CD of this organ i have made in the last 10 yrs bottom C is mud. Maybe everyone's mic placement is crap - who knows.... I'm visiting in Apr/May so i can find out! Can't wait!
@dedrickstreit However the organ still sounds pretty impressive and superior to many other intruments, it requires maintenance. You're right about the "bottom c", but there's also the Chamades which need to be tuned. You will hear for yourself if you have the luck to experience the organ in person, but I'm sure you will still be impressed ;)
Hi guys.. been noting your exchanges. But I need to know a CD number as this is quite the finest recording of the #3 I have ever heard. I know and love the Wanamaker and indeed glue all ornaments to the shelf during Verse 2 of Come Sweet Death but has anyone recorded #3 on the Wanamaker? If not then this will do me just fine! What's the orchestra? I NEED this CD! And my good B&W speakers and Yammy amp just love it.. Best wishes from Down Under..
Truly love this version of Saint Saens Organ Symphony, the sound has such depth, bravo, it is truly fantastic. I would have loved to be in the congregation
To notredameswarrior1, The Wanamaker is certainly a superlative instrument, but technical disparities between instruments or the recordings of those instruments are not the whole point. yes, we all appreciate technical excellence and accuracy in recordings, but depth of the Wanamaker bass is but one characteristic. Is your stereo even accurately reproducing the sound of the Grand Court, or is your system delivering more base than the actual instrument does. I would rate this instrument higher
@srwicker Ive heard wanamaker in real person and personaly ive never heard this organ in personaly but to me its better. i mean i like the sound of st.ouen more. thats me. its my opinion. yes the wanamaker organ is nice like i said but to me this organ is just the greatest on earth.
This concert makes this too often played symphony resonate again. This is THE definitive performance of this symphony! This is an incredibly fine instrument!
Just what is it with the St Ouen organ. It is certainly loud but lacking depth of sound. I have a very powerful sound system with 2 large Fisher studio speakers with metal cones. The Wanamaker organ makes this place rumble like a earth tremor as in Virgil Fox's - Come sweet death, the second verse. Sorry to criticise and perhaps it's the recording equipment, not up to the job.
@silverstartrucker no offence it maybe is the recording equipment because personaly this organ out does wanamaker anyday. im from the U.S. and ive bin to wanamaker and for me this organ out does wanamaker. i like the wanamaker organ i do but this organ has i think atleast 22,000 pipes less than wanamaker and for me its a better organ. if you really listen to the wanamaker organ and listen to this organ....there is more of a pure sound with this. atleast on my speakers there is.
@notredameswarrior1 - Sorry, but once again this organ is very loud but there is no true depth of sound. Your speakers obviously do not give a very deep bass like my Fisher's do. My neighbour's complain about the deep rumbling. I do not have to play the Wanamaker at a high volume. Loud is different to deep, but thank you very much for your reply....
@silverstartrucker i know that. but the wanamaker organ just dosnt apeal to me like this one does. yes this organ is loud and so is the wanamaker to. this organ is considered to be one of the finest on earth if not the finest. thats my opinion.
This was truly amazing. I was shocked, because I didn't expect after years of carefully avoiding the Organ Symphony (after years of passionately loving it), I could be so attracted to it once more. The Litaize-Barenboim recording (with the organ of Chartres chatedral) was my very first gateway to enjoying classical music, but now I've heard the Rouen performance... wow!!!
Please would you enlighten us with the names of the performers, so that those who want it, can try to obtain this on cd?
Magnificent! What a difference from the Cochereau/BPO-Karajan recording, in which NDdeP's organ (in all its pre-rebuild brilliance) is doctored by DG into sounding a mere ghost of itself. Obviously a 'fix' so that their beloved BPO rules the roost...
I love this rendition, and the organ is obviously one of the world's finest, but it's too bad the orchestra is not in the cathedral. They are clearly in a different space. You can especially hear it at 5:18 or any place where the orchestra releases loudly without the organ. Very little reverb compared to the organ. I have a Pines of Rome recording that is the same way. Organ and orchestra were different places on different days. Awesome recording, still could have been better yet.
@haggar719 You should give Daniel Roths recording a try... live recording done last year of the Saint-Saens with his Son Francois-Xavier Roth conducting in St. Sulpice.... i dont think i can find any words to describe the awesomeness of that recording :)
And St. Sulpice is one of the few organs in the world that can be compared with the force of St. Ouen
WoW! This is how it should sound. I love the St Ouen Organ. everything sounds amazing on it. Bet the orchestra had a shock first time they heard it in re-hearsal.
Heerlijke muziek van Saint Saens. Precies zoals deze grote componist in zijn muziek altijd was. Gevoelig en majestueus. Een prima weergave waarbij het schitterende Cavaille Coll orgel een belangrijke rol speelt.
The absolute best version of one of my favorite pieces! I love how at the end of each phrase in the piano 4 hand passage, the organ sounds like something dangerous growling on the other side of the fence.
Very glad to see this videoclip back online!!!! Alleluia!!
Granted that the tempo is somewhat slow, the orchestral reverb is less than it should be to match that of the organ (it would be so much better if both were recorded at the same location at the same time!!!) and the orchestra seems a bit underpowered relative to the organ: it's still GLORIOUS!!!
