  • this is my all-time favorite nba intro. i haven't really been into the nba since it left cbs. the nba is not the same anymore. bird, magic, doc j., i miss that era.

  • @8283doc ...you are correct sir!!...no doubt the greatest NBA intro ever...i love this !...great trumpet section!!...i remember this back in the day..they used this same theme during the 1983 playoffs as well, up until the finals when they changed the theme

  • Hi kimv020887, I've been a Doctor J fan since his ABA days (more precisely since the 75-76 season), and I've seen all those CBS intros since. But as I said, the best one to me was the one for the 1981-82 season and the 1982-83 season (the intro changed with the commencement of the Finals that season). I just liked the music and the way Dick Stockton reviewed the previous games leading up to the televised game.

  • @6DoctorJ okay 6DoctorJ, this, the 1983-1988 and 1988-1990 CBS intro and the NBA on NBC intro as well as the current NBA on TNT theme are all EPIC!!!

  • @6DoctorJ look at the NBA on NBC intro too, 6DoctorJ. ITS ALSO EPIC. REPLY BACK. ARE YOU A JULIUS ERVING FAN?

  • To me... the best NBA game intro ever... the 1982 season CBS!

  • @6DoctorJ This isn't the only one CBS had, 6DoctorJ. Look at their 1983-1988 intro. REPLY BACK.

  • @6DoctorJ i agre with you 1000%. early 80s intro was the best/nba basketball on cbs was the best.

  • Someone should create a custom intro of what if CBS televised the 2011 NBA Finals between Miami and Dallas by using CBS's 1982 NBA Finals intro like in this video. Anyone agree with me>

  • @bduddy55555 TNT is the decent network of the NBA. Dick Stockton from CBS is also there.

  • @kimv020887 OK, you caught me. TNT's intros are good, but I'm just not a fan of the NBA.

  • @bduddy55555 well go to the NBAclassics channel on YouTube. search NBAclassics for classic NBA clips.

  • the golden era of the NBA

  • @myboyz24 nope myboyz24, the 80s are not the only golden era, the 50's 60s and 70s as well the 90s are all good too.

  • @kimv020887 Yea, but not as good as the '80s. There were some good teams during that time that didn't win the 'chip due to the high level of competition. The Hawks, Bucks, Spurs, Mavs, & Blazers of the '80s could have won if they played in any other decade.

  • @myboyz24 well how can you forget the 50s (Mikan era) 60's (Russell and Chamberlain era), 70's (Walton, Maravich and Reed era) and the 90's (Jordan, Olajuwon, Kemp and Ewing era)?

  • @kimv020887 Those were good eras, but the 80s had rivalries & everybody hated each other, which means there were going to be good games. None of this crap like you see in today's NBA, where everyone is BFFs. Plus, the ratings on CBS went through the roof during that time & everyone was looking forward to June as to see who would play in the Finals(mostly Lakers & Celtics).

  • @myboyz24 well the NBA on CBS had class during its 17 years on the air from 1973-1990. But don't forget The NBA on NBC from 1990-2002. IMO The NBA on CBS lives in THE NBA ON TNT.

  • This series turned the NBA on CBS around. Before this: low rated finals match-ups between small market teams on tape delay. This was the first series that wasn't shown on tape delay since 1978.

  • ADANDE!!!

  • The 1982 NBA Finals was one of the best Finals ever with three of the best players ever in Earvin Johnson, Julius Erving & Kareem Abdul Jabbar. As well as two of the best Head Coaches of all time in Pat Reilly & Bill Cunningham. Plus two great Announcers in Dick Stocton & Bill Russell. Its hard to find an NBA Finals with more.

  • Comment removed

  • Dick Stockton and Bill Russell great announcers ? You've got to be kidding me !

  • @DENNISPUPPY

    Agree to disagree

  • Dick Stockton got better once he got away from Russel and Tom Heinsohn. CBS was considering replacing both Stockton and Heinsohn after the 1987 season; of course Stockton stayed, but Heinsohn was dropped to the # 2 team with Brent Musburger. Hubie Brown and Doug Collins should have been CBS 1, 2 , analysts

  • does anyone have intro to gsme 1 of 1982 West Finals between Lakers/Spurs

  • Early 1980's Basketball is great, Celtics, Sixers and the Lakers.

  • That intro sequence starting at 1:27 kinda looks the same as that HBO intro for their boxing but CBS used different music

  • Does anyone know the name of the music starting @ 1;28 thats my favorite theme music, would be a classic ringtone

  • Stewsh, you are absolutely correct!..i love this theme music...best NBA theme of all time...this was an era when musicality still mattered...i am a avid fan of big band music, Maynard Ferguson, etc..i love majestic trumpet music...the horns in this song give me the chills...plus, it brings back great memories of the NBA back in the early 1980s(back when i actually watched the NBA..lol)

  • @dallas1963, it was certainly better than the two themes used prior to this NBA Finals.

  • @dallas1963 This one the best? What about the theme CBS used starting the next year? If intros like that were still around, I might watch the NBA...

  • @bduddy55555 well TNT has an intro, bduddy55555. REPLY BACK.

  • Its funny how the West coast has always accused the East coast of rough house tactics. They would get so mad at the slightest bump. That is why Boston and Phili was so fun to watch in the early eighties.

  • wow da one sixers player kept grabbin kareem's ass every time he boxed him out, tht would be considered homo 2day lol. damn the forum was super oldskool compared to da crazy hightech staples center. i unfortunetly wasnt born yet so i wasnt able 2 see da awsome rivalry b/tw Philly and LA, when we were actually good. The Dr. J and magic johnson matchup must've been amazing to watch live.

  • Thanks for posting this video, I've been looking for this briefly used intro for years. I had a college friend into obscure British rock and he was playing the music heard over the highlights & interviews, and it's like, I've heard that before! The part over the animation, I think, is one of those custom sports music numbers, but the first part is a song from the Alan Parsons Project, "The Ace of Swords", on YouTube (starts @ 0:46)

  • We still got stuck wirh Stockton and Russell for the 1982 finals

  • Dick Stockton was so anti-Laker during this time period- no respect no matter what

  • He along with those color commentators were the Celtic Ministry of Information.

  • starting with a regular season telecast agains t Portland in April 82, CBS assigned Frank Glieber and Hubie Brown to every 1982 Western Conference playoff game that the Lakers had on CBS, At least those guys gave the Lakers the respect they deserved

  • more like the Ministry of Stupidity- especially Bill Russell

  • who wore #30 for LAKERS ?

  • oh yeah. Kevin Mc.Kenna

  • get back on defense Kareem!!!!!!

  • never heard Brent Musburger use this intro

  • For those interested, DownsA530 has this entire game.

  • Pairing Dick Stockton and Hubie Brown- long overdue. A+ move- CBS

  • this intro was primarily used by Dick Stockton and Frank Glieber(RIP Buddy)

  • if only abc would come to their senses and hire gary bender

  • 23 seconds in thats jimi hendrix right there

  • Who knows the name of this highlight music? Been trying to find it since the 80's.

  • BEST INTRO CBS HAD

  • I am wondering when Cbs started using this intro

  • Comment removed

  • I remember this from the 1983 west finals, so i guess it was only used 2 years.

  • cbs must have used this intro on game 5 of 83 west finals between lakers/ spurs

  • They used this intro I think for the 81-82 and 82-83 seasons, into the conference finals. I think the first time they used the intro we all know was the 83 Finals,

  • you are absolutely right.this intro was actually used once in the 1984 playoffs. New Jersey vs. Milwaukee

  • intro was also used on game 1 of 1983 west semifinal- PORTLAND/LOS ANGELES LAKERS

  • JIM KELLY AND BILL RAFTERY

  • FRANK GLIBER/JAMES BROWN

  • @DENNISPUPPY Any chance you have that game?

  • i wish i did , Mark. Maybe next season when the new Lakers cable network starts, they will show this game

  • @DENNISPUPPY I was talking about the New Jersey-Milwaukee playoff game from '84 that uses this intro.

  • in 83 the the narration music was different- no time for talk by christopher cross. Only David K. Jones (kost103.5) in Los Angeles mentioned that CBS used this music in their NBA intro

  • although Frank Gllieber mostly used the 1982 voice over

  • maybe even game 6 being that Dick Stockton called those two games of 83 west finals

  • I have a game tape from the Knicks-Sixers opening round series in '83. 2 seasons and done for this package.

  • I wish abc would use this intro in their coverage.

  • abc actually used this intro on baseball coverage

  • post it dude!

  • If I could do it without begging for a lawsuit, I promise you, I would do it...and I say that as a Massachusetts native and a lifelong Celtics fan. :)

  • Go Mavericks, Jazz, 76ers, and Bucks in no particular order. The Suns are good too. Al McCoy's the best NBA broadcaster out there.

  • IS AL MC.COY STILL AROUND ?

  • CHICK HEARN PUT AL MC. COY TO SHAME

  • im a philadelphia fan. I was only 9 back then but I miss these days from the early 80's. The Sixers, Lakers, and Celtics were the best teams in the NBA by a wide margin. I was hoping the Sixers would rejoin their old rivals atop the NA but unfortunately they still suck.

  • Sixers were the east's dominant team at the start of the decade. Problem was they kept running into LA in the finals, and then couldn't beat the celtics after 83. If you wanna go back to the 77 finals loss to Walton's Blazers, it was easily the best 7 year period in Philly basketball history.

  • Oh and the 01 rematch was nice, but the Game 1 shocker aside, it was a pretty 1-sided series. Then again, so was 83. ;)

  • a healthy Lakers team in 83 runs the sixers out of town

  • Hmm... doubt it. Sixers still woulda won. What are you complaining about anyway? There's nothing you can do about injuries. They still won 5 titles that decade, and probably shoulda beat Boston in 84 if not for the clothesline. If you wanna bitch, bitch about Kevin McCale.

  • i agree with you. but in game 2 of the 83, Rambis got whistled for a fould which should have been a chargeon Moses Malone, but referee Darell Garretson was too anti-LAKER to make the right call

  • the Lakers beat themselves in 84, and could not buy a break from referee Jake Odonnell in game 5 at the Boston Gerden

  • If Garretson would have called the change on Malone, Moses would have fouled out

  • Garretson's son Ron, is almost the asshole Darrel was

  • I partially agree....healthy Nixon, McAdoo and Worthy definitely push it to 7 games.

The thing is that Philly had some amazing momentum and unbelievable confidence!

  • if it would have gotten to game 7, Jake Odonnell would have the lead ref, thus insuring a sixers blowout

  • judahsong, what are you talking about? Worthy wasn't on this Lakers squad, he was still in college and this series didn't go 7 games either, the Lakers won it in 6 games...

  • The comment was about the 1983 Series. Worthy, McAdoo and Nixon all missed the 83 Series and I feel they would have made a difference.

    This conversation was from May.

  • with those 3 healthy, Lakers beat 76 ers

  • I don't think so........The 76ers wouldn't have swept them, but NOTHING was stopping the sixers that year.......Moses was the difference. Dawkins/Caldwell Jones didn't make Kareem work on the defensive end like Moses.......

  • youre referring to 1982, judahsong and i are referring to 1983

  • Between 1977 & 1987, the 76ers & Celtics played the Lakers in the Finals and both were 1-2 against L.A. and imagine all the coast to coast travel these teams had to do between games 4, 5, 6 & 7 if the series went that far. That's why they instituted the questionable 2-3-2 format in 1985 to cutdown on coast to coast travel. At least the '83 Sixers did not have to worry about that.

  • this was the first season i ever watched basketball. was about 8 at the time. my dad changed the channel and saw andrew toney shooting a free throw...so i decided that the sixers were my favorite team..forget the fact that i was living on the west coast!

thank goodness they finally got over the hump in 83'!

  • "faith is more important then confidence"... *ignores illegitimate child for 20 years*

  • good point... Dr J, Mr nice guy neglected his daughter for 20 years...

  • I would kill to see this full game..please let someone upload it

  • Wow, never heard that theme song before. The one that followed blew that one out of the water!

  • 5× NBA Champion (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988) 3× NBA MVP (1987, 1989, 1990) ... 107 win.[23] Johnson became the first and only rookie to win the NBA Finals MVP ...

  • as a lifelong celtic fan this music reminds me of one thing and that is andrew toney lighting up the celtics in the '82 eastern conference finals!

  • Dick Stockton

  • i didnt care too much for Dick Stockton during this time period

  • maybe because he had a couple of morons as his color commentators

  • i refer to Bill Russel and Tom Heinsohn

  • This was when Dick Stockton was the best broadcaster in the business, I suppose. It's too bad that his senility makes him look foolish sometimes now. I still like him, though.

  • Dick Stockton has NEVER been senile. Was a pro then and is a pro today. Hubie Brown as well.

Tommy Heinsohn on the other hand.

  • this one was so much better than the 83 intro...

  • you said that right

  • this music gave me goosebumps. I would replay it in my head while I was sittin in high school class. it's so dramatic

  • same here-junior high in my case

  • Wow so like 1983 was the breakthrough year for intro music it seems. What a huge difference.

  • I was confident that the Lakers would win this Game 6 clincher-the unsung hero was Bob McAdoo. LA led all the way in a 114-104 win. The 76ers stayed within striking distance, led by Dr J, but could not get over the hump. Late in the third, Bob McAdoo rejected a Sixer layup that would have given them the lead. Then with the score 103-100, with about 3 min left, Kareem(still in his prime) made a three point play that all but iced it. Pat Riley was just 37 and starting a great career as coach

  • Does anyone know the intro music in the first part of this video? One of my all-time favorite highlight tunes. Thanks in advance.

  • MINE TOO

  • One of the more underrated and infrequently mentioned sports music themes of all time, probably because it's too brief. Nevertheless, it started the CBS tradition of building drama in the intro to a sports event. The background during the Dr. J and Magic interviews, when attached to the main theme, makes for compelling broadcast sports music. I'm thrilled someone finally unearthed this. Thank you!

  • dumb question: what year was the NBA championship series renamed the "NBA Finals?"

  • 1986 was the first Championship Series known as the NBA finals.

  • Thanks for that info.

  • THAT WOULD BE 1986

  • Like I had posted on another comment page, you have the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup and 'The Finals'. I'm sure most would be able to connect which sport belongs to which championship event, except basketball. They are simply called 'The Finals'.

  • No..the official title of the NBA Finals was the World Championship Series from the inception of the league until 1986..now, it's the unofficial title..the NBA winner though, forever more will be know as the WORLD champions..fuck what the other countries and fuckin politically correct people think, THAT'S HOW IT IS!

  • As I have said - ask most sports fans what the championship game(s) of some sports are and they will tell you right away. Football-Super Bowl, etc. But, ask them what they call it for basketball, they'd be clueless. "It's 'The NBA Fianls'." would get an 'And? What else?'

  • Could someone please for the love of GOD find this full game and post it!?

  • I loved this!!..especially the theme music!!

  • I wish CBS got the NBA back this year. This is the first year of the ABC/ESPN and TNT contract renewal, which means after this season, fans have to put up with this for seven more years. I wish it was CBS, TNT and ESPN getting the NBA. CBS does nothing after the Masters. They're pretty much asleep until the NFL season. If they get the NBA back, CBS will be awesome. It's evident with their NCAA coverage. Also, they have Kevin Harlan and Gus Johnson!

  • There's always golf and tennis. :P

  • But, I think one of the golf and tennis events are major.

  • GUS JOHNSON IS ATROCIOUS

  • a great intro

  • I just copied the video info from nba website and pasted it here. They were wrong on the others as well, but I forgot to fix this one.

  • How do you copy videos from the NBA website?

  • Use WmRecorder

  • Thanks, I'll try that...

  • I would LOOOVE to see this full game.

  • I would, also. This is the only 1 of the 8 Lakers Title clinching games since 1980 I haven't seen in full, and no one seems to have full footage of Game 6, 1982 Finals.

  • THEY DO . CBS JUST WONT RELEASE IT

  • well they gotta look at the history books again

  • this is from 1982 man

  • That's what I thought too because of the reference to "2 years ago" but nba dot com listed this game as being from 1980. I don't know what's so hard about them putting the correct dates
