I am as white as can be and really don't give 2 shits what color these guys are. They are wonderful musicians and I have been a divoted fan since 89. Color doesn't matter
After reading the comments, I never really thought about it, but it's true. I can't think of any black rock groups or acts since these guys. I know they're out there, but I bet they're few and far between. I saw Living Colour many times back in the day and were great every time, and their music provided a good deal of the soundtrack of my college years.
I'd love to see another group like them come along.
why aren't blacks well represented in rock music over the last 40 years? is Chuck D right? is the industry racist in this way? do they want to keep rock for whites only? Because there seemed to be a small window of opportunity for black rock musicians in the late 80's with Living Colour, Fishbone, Tony Macalpine(guitar god btw), and then it closed.
@lamentate07 Maybe they were smarter than most of their white contemporaries, and decided that the pinnacle that the bands you named reached was impossible to reach for them. So they devoted their time to something else :)
@lamentate07 It can't be "closed" like you imagine. This isn't the 50s. Anyone can listen to what ever they want to on the internet or hear of a good band through word of mouth. Get fucking real and quite with the "being held back" mentality. If good bands play live often and put themselves out there, they will likely be heard. Maybe instead of blacks being somehow "denied" the ability to rock out, they just chose to not participate due to a huge culture shift in the black populace.
People used to ask who Vernon Reid is. I would tell them to listen to this song and when the guitar riff was over, they would know everything they need to know about Vernon Reid!
9.09 Just listen to that incredibly jazzy guitar solo of Vernon Reid!
@liveup5 There's enough black guys rockin' like this, they just don't get the same chances. Major labels ain't eager to sign artists that can actually play an instrument and compose a decent song. They rather stuff us with non musical easy digestable fast food garbage in order to make that fast buck.
Vernon, Corey, Muzz, Will and Doug are damn fucking geniuses in their own right... ... a jealous whitie french guy that can only dream of having 1/1000000 of their musical skills.
Man... listening to the solo in undercover i sooooo just could see Django sitting in there just playing that vibe...going back and forth with Stephan. Tasty and intrigeing riffs.
@eman00418 The 1ne & only Queen Latifah is rapping on Undercover @ 8:45. They only dealt with the best in whatever genre they chose to indulge. Mick Jagger, and P.E. on Vivid. And the Queen on this 1ne. One of the greatest socio-political rock bands ever! Blk or Whte!! And hands down the GREATEST Black rock band of all time!!
Why in the hell didn't any other black guys end up rocking like this? I guess they all felt like Living Colour did it so well, that there was no need to bother. Instead,we got bombed, endlessly, with horrible rap and hip-hop. There needs to be a rebirth of good old funk. Oh how I'd love (just once) to hear Strawberry Letter 23 by The Brothers Johnson, coming out of a car that's going down the road, instead of all that yo-yo-yo,my bitches and all my bling shit. Pathetic crap.
Who's to blame, the black guys trying to rap or the suburban kids who pay serious money for it. Its easy to make as well. Beats learning how to play an instrument or sing.
Let 'em have it, I know the truth. It is sad though that Living Colour isn't considered by the masses to be one of the best bands ever, where they belong.
The thing is - why would a record company pay talented musicians (who might be a slight risk because they are so original) to put out a quality album when then can put out garbage that makes them rich.
@liveup5 live, black bands are out there, some rockin a political message , others jut making metal music, but the music industry and entertainment industry is always squeemish when it comes to promoting people outside of the stereotype. I'm a black guy and i like van halen and dokken and I like alot of different styles of music as well. But in america , there is a singular view of what people think i will like so they are shocked when I show my diverse side.
@MissClogWog Sorry...I guess my comment wasn't very clear. I meant that a wave of Living Colour wannabe's would have been a welcome change instead of all of the rap and hip hop that totally dominated the 90's and to this day, still does. There may have been black rockers out there, but they were well under the radar compared to what we have been bombarded with for the last 20 plus years.
@liveup5 You know, I ask myself the same question. I hate that gangster, ghetto rap shit. I'm a black woman myself and people are shocked that my CD collection is mostly classic rock and metal. They expect for me to be into rap and hip hop, when I'm totally opposite.
Awesome song.. love the way it slows in the end- reminds me of a machine breaking down. If you like this, check out "This is the Life" on the same album.
where did you got this? i can't find it on limewire and i can't find the cd in any store. could you upload this somewhere and send me a link? i would really appreciate it! great song!

Information Overload was my favourite song on Time's Up.
It just kicks ass.. and turned out to be pretty prophetic in it's own way.
One of Vernon's best leads too imho.
What a fucking great band LC was for a the first couple of albums.
Like a breath of fresh air at a time when the music industry was just complete shit.. full of hair bands and pop treacle.
The classic lineup of Living Colour was one of the finest bands I've ever heard .. live or studio.
After Muzz left it just wasn't the same.
