I love his first-finger trill at about 4 seconds in! Favorite scene in the movie! I used to fast-forward to this scene for people and say 'Watch this trill!'.
I love and hate this piece. I saw this movie with the only girl I have loved. It's been 10 years and I'm still in this place. Heart gets dry indeed. And all you see it's darkness and knives.
@solnegrolunaroja No matter what life throws at you, you must always strive to evolve your own personal self and try to see the wider future, thers an even better girl out there somewhere all you have to do is let go and stop fixating on the past otherwise you will never move forward, check out NLP, anchors, triggers and such, i`m pretty sure it will help you.
@bklynbroker See what a wormy false little snapping turtle you are, you couldn't resist writing that I have personally never been loved to wound me for speaking a truth. You can just cancel yourself out from even thinking about love. Sure he is creating nice music but the man is getting spectral lap dances and living in a chicken coop, yes,I question his mental health.
I must say it completely spoils the scene, I'm sorry to say. I'm only a guitar player but this is so obvious JP Marielle acts instead of being the musician. That's the difference between 'theater trained' actors and method actors I guess. I must say JP Marielle usually plays comedies and he was brilliant in this rather dramatic movie.
As much as I could ponder Fooperson's point about all the actors that could have used more realistic instrumental technique, I could also easily imagine many people making his point without "foo"-ing it up with his needless use of the "F"-word.
As touching and beautiful the song and the emotion of this scene is, the complete disregard of the actor to even try to fucking ACT like he is playing the instrument completely ruins it for me.
The guy shoud've at least tried to learn a little bit of the song, or the director should have positioned the camera so we couldn't see the actor's fingers fumbling around randomly. What's even worse is that there are countless other scenes in the movie where it's clearly obvious this actor isnt playing
Its clear you didn´t become aware of the great state of the art movie shocking everyone who watched it. Or your words didnt be written. The fingers of actor, it really does matter to you?
This is one of my favourite films, I've watched it countless times & also have the music on my iPod. This scene is so beautiful and moving. The cinematography is superb every scene is like a painting
It is quite apparent that the cello playing eminates from a recording (or elsewhere) because his finger placements and bow movements do not match the music being heard.
Although, this only slighlty degrades the beauty of the scene.
It itself is not a viola da gamba rather "viola da gamba" refers to any one of a family of bowed, fretted, stringed musical instruments developed in the 1400s and used primarily in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, thus what you see is not indeed a cello but a precusor of what we know today as a cello.
No, It is a viola da gamba. I have one and my teacher has written a book on the subject. Also, the viola da gamba is not exactly a precursor to the cello. So touching... I saw the film in early 90-ies and I still remember the atmosphere, the music captured me, the story too... Maybe the first time that I prefere the film rather than a book- it is because of this wonderful music!!!
he's not dreaming of her. the music brought her back to him. he made the music so that she comes back. 'tous les matins du monde' it's a book by pascal quignard.
@cammigurlgonewild wish i had found myself at your age. it's admirable. but i started about two years later... at the age of sixteen i started to listen tu such music and desperately fell in love with it... i think it's for ever.) so i hope i can say i understand.
@cammigurlgonewild All the same you should keep an open ear because good music is always being made-today, tommorrow and yesterday. Do not let the bigots of the past preclude you from the future because it justifies their mouldy existence.
@cammigurlgonewild That's how it has to be, stay close to it, girl, don't leave it anymore, cause it's about the essence of living. That's what I've done to, and believe me, you'll see much more in life than the others.
There is hope for humanity when there are still a few whom recognize the garage from what is demo corp. pop culture (e.g. - Disney and Twilight), and what elegance and truth really is. I love this film and other folk songs such as 'Malaguena Salerosa' and 'Saint-Preux & Danielle Licari-Concerto pour une voix '. Jahbless from California.
@allegromarcato@cammigurlgonewild she just said that she's not influenced by the stereotype of what the teenagers listen to. it means that the vision and feeling of music are just unique to all of us, and that there is no rule that set it out. (anyway, it's almost one of the matters of this movie)
you can be old and like hannah montana; you can be young and like baroque music; in opposition of what the stereotypes impose.
@cammigurlgonewild I understand you perfectly. I'm only 21 and the majority of my age group is unable to appreciate this kind of music, this kind of films... this kind of life?
I'm glad to know that I'm not the only young person who likes baroque music and baroque conception of life.
For anyone who hasn't actually seen the film, the woman he is playing to is his wife. He's crying because, she's dead. Note at the end the broken biscuit on the table. Its a cornerstone of the film's message.
Oh, is this a piece by Sainte-Colombe, or is it composed by Jordi Savall? I heard that there is a mix of authentic french baroque music and some of Jordi Savall's own music.
I liked this movie because it captured so well the esoteric culture surrounding instruments like the viol and lute in 17th-c France. But this actor's left hand drives me crazy. It is obviously not stopping the right strings at the right frets. I wish it could have been kept out of the shot. It was so distracting that it almost ruined the movie for me.
Guess I can deem me lucky not to be a trained instrumentalist. - It's that basic problem that an actor's skills lie basically on acting. On a quite different level the way movie cops and criminals sling their guns is also often far from each reality.
I know what you mean exactly. Its quite clear he has absolutely no idea how to play. I just try my best to ignore it. I think they fixed it a bit on the DVD, but it still is quite ckearky faked.
I wrack my brain creating intelligent, well thought out rhetoric to provoke thought and then struggle to receive a +1, +2 0r a rare +3 rating. It must be that small 'i' you used to commence your statement.
Toronto, Canada
With mine your now+5. i agree with your sentiments about 'Tous les matins du monde'
wonderful music, but horribly, and I mean horribly mimicked by the actor.

It's true, but i think sound and image aren't adjusted (example: sound before string D )

I know what you mean exactly. Its quite clear he has absolutely no idea how to play. I just try my best to ignore it. I think they fixed it a bit on the DVD, but it still is quite ckearky faked.

seriously the synchronisation of hands and viola is not the most important thing in the film. i mean te most importat is the emotion you feel...

Wow! +4 for this simple confirming statement
Jesuislajeaunefille (young woman)
I wrack my brain creating intelligent, well thought out rhetoric to provoke thought and then struggle to receive a +1, +2 0r a rare +3 rating. It must be that small 'i' you used to commence your statement.

(what a pain!... the Viola has made me cry... the tears of Sainte Colombe... the flashback of his wife... great scene).
