Jim Matheos is my favorite musician ever....so underrated and understated....He'll never get the appreciation he deserves, but at least there are some people who recognize his genius.
A Pleasant Shade of Gray Part VIII has such fantastic guitar work...glad you included it here.
Matheos is probably one of the best guitarists of his generation - he can write long, intricate passages full of rhythmic shifts or simple melodic ones (like the solo on Life in Still Water) and have a great amount of success with both. He's sort of like Robert Fripp's counterpart in progressive metal, though he gets less acclaim.
Jim Matheos can play so many styles it's just inspiring he is so under rated in my view he is one of the most amazing guitar players who have such a good sense of harmony and phrasing. He balances stuff out really well and knows when and where to exactly execute an idea he is just fantastic :D
Matheos is without a doubt a songwriter of rare brilliance. His ability to build complex and esoteric harmonies around raw emotion and forlorn hope is genius. From the first albums you can hear Matheos mature as a songwriter and musisican culminating into some of the most influential music of the last 30 years. Jim could put out an album of him playing the spoons and singing hungarian lullabys and I would buy it, somehow I know he would take it to a new level; Rock on Jim.
Hes a great musician.. one of my favourite!. Too bad.. Fates Warning is underrated. I'm still waiting for that new album.! I also love what he did with OSI.
hey was that first part was from "First Impressions".. ?? It was fantastic!!.
Nice tribute!

Yeah, I agree Jim's a great musician. I picked excerpts from songs (in order)
1 - Three Wishes (solo cd, First Impressions)
2 - Fischer's Gambit (Gordian Knot, Emergent)
3 - Part VIII (A Pleasant Shade of Gray)
4 - A Conference of Clouds (solo cd, Away With Words)
5 - The Last Light of August (solo cd, Away With Words)
Enjoy!
