I hail from Western Canada (a country that gets screwed by wizards/hasbro's trading policies) and there are seldom if ever PTQ's held within a viable distance for me to attend. This above all else is why I'm purely a Casual Player (the other being that at the competitive level you seldom see variety or at least that's my understanding). If the qualifiers where more evenly distributed throughout the world I think I'd care more about the PlanesWalker points and ProTour gibberish.
Guy who grinds into Worlds by Top 32ing a ton of GPs could actually be an interesting story. Probably not a good thing because of the limited Worlds slots, but it could actually be an interesting story - especially if Mr. Grinder doesn't scrub out at Worlds.
I am an average magic player who has been playing seriously since Lorwyn - I always want to keep up with the personalities in magic because they see combos and patterns that I miss - I would like to see them get rewarded (or at least compensated slightly) for being smart and interesting enough to rise to the top of a pile of really smart people.
Wizards - take care of those that make people look deeper and try harder.
All legit competitions should have pros or it seems petty and irrelevant
I think people are wrong if there saying it's not aimed at competive people. My store we have people coming in from all different walks of life and from different places from Malaysia to Dubai from 20k/y people to 100k+/y. We have people chatting Neman when they see the U/B deck smashing someone before the FMN. Wolf run is the top topic not someones marriage or other life related things. You take the Worlds you take our feeling of ligitmacy away. Competive it's a way of life.
I'd be much more interested in coverage for the new version of Worlds than for Worlds how it used to be, or any other event for that matter. I understand Wizards wanting an event like the old Invitationals as the Best of the Best battles to crown a Best Player in Magic each year.
The issue here seems like a supply/demand issue. Supposition: Hasbro/WotC want to push people to play more, believing that means they'll buy more AND there is a sector of the community who has a different vision of "Pro." The question then becomes, is there enough support for an alternate-vision "Pro" community and from where will it be resourced? The larger commercial venture could be the 'lead' on forging that "Pro" community if they see a return on investment.
@kuy122 I played magic since odyssey and i participated in various PTs. If you dont netdeck, you are just playing to LOSE. What is the point of playing to lose? Why don't you work without wages, eat without a food on the plate. Because saying 'WINNING IS NOT THE MAIN THING!' is equivalent to playing without a purpose, people that say that dont contemplate much, they think they justify what FUN is but in reality, NOBODY LIKES TO LOSE. fact.
a) Pro's should get compensated. It isn't about the money, but a pro needs to be able to play and market the game, which in my opinion, is healthy for Magic. We watch this video and went, "oh, that's LSV! I know him. I'm going to watch this video and see what he says" Channel fireball is advertised. We buy cards.
b) @TSG, how the hell can you wear a sharks jersey one week and then a dallas stars jersey the next? lol
I'm a casual player. I love magic, I've been playing since Fallen Empires and I've never cared about the protour, it has always seemed like a very far removed part of magic to me. I've never once followed it, but I've played magic through the years constantly. I really love playing magic online, so it makes me happy to hear the top online player is going to get recognition. I don't even know how pro tour points worked.
People are unable to say that they "Wizards" does not care about pro play because what is the reason to really play this game unless you have the aspiration to get better and get to play agents your favorite pros. Pro play is the best thing that has ever happened to the game. Growing up I always wanted to play and get better so I could one day get the chance to play against people like LSV, which drove me to play more and buy more cards...
so, I don't really know what to think of this because i'm just a lowly FNM draft grinder who can't afford to create a top tier deck before standard gets rocked by a new set.
I can't imagine WotC screwing over the people who put in the most work into supporting their community
My only concern is that I want to keep seeing LSV and all the current pros at event coverages. Without these guys, the Pro Tour just isn't remotely as interesting.
Sooo TSG can't rep hockey, a sport that's under-marketed yet awesome to watch when you understand it? And judging by the fact that he's worn a Rangers and a B's jersey, he's semi-trolling people which is always a plus.
My main gripe is that people from not-US can't go to as many tournaments as the Americans, and with this new system they are kinda forced to fly for days just to even stand a chance at competing at Worlds. Even in the US going to all the tournaments can force players into a very stupid schedule.
My guess is that if they decide to announce anything, it will be at the World Championship. Seems like a logical place to do that. With that said, I do believe it is a mistake to turn Worlds into a 16-person invitational. The wealth of talent is just too big in the pro community for that to accurately represent who is the best in the world.
from a viewers entertainment stand point i really look forward to watching world. sounds awesome. from a players stand point it means I can never realistically expect myself to be sitting in those seats, which is sad. I do think Magic should put money into the system for high profile players to play magic around the world, its good for the game.
It might be also the first time it is actually going to be a lot more feasible for a player to win worlds twice or more times, which should be cool too.
I like the new worlds' system because I think it was disappointing that after watching the coverage of worlds for 3 days, 6 random players and only 2 pros actually made it to the top 8 every year. In other words, there was not a true difference from worlds to another kind of pro-tour in which many semi-pros qualified for. I think it is now going to be an awesome coverage and only the true remarkable players are going to be able compete.
You honestly, without a doubt, inspire me to play magic and get better LSV. You (and others) are incredibly entertaining and there needs to be names to aspire to become. I hope to goodness that it's you- but there need to be names!
Pro tour and branded players have been a big part of magic's upswing. Anyone consider that they might actually enhance it? Don't assume. LSV is absolutely right. We don't know, so don't get crazy.
@lifeinsepia Lsv said people will think the pros are mad because they are losing money. What I am saying is if my job decided to give me a pay cut without explanation I would be mad as well.
I hope that Wizards doesn't remove the idea behind pro points, though I am not a pro tour player I love following all the pro tours throughout the year and have been following them ever since I started playing 5 years ago. The pro tour and mtg's pro's drive prices for cards and make people want to play with the best cards because they were used in a deck that won a pro tour or GP. Pro tours and pro players are needed for the game to keep the title as the best trading card game :)
I think they should keep the pro tour. There needs to be "pros" for the game to stay interesting and evolve, because most of the pros drive the meta-game and help a casual magic player with coverage and draft videos. However, I do like the idea of maybe the 15th and/or 16th person at worlds being someone who just went to almost all the PTQs and GPs and got top 16 and 32 alot but never won one. It keeps more casual players interested and could make worlds more interesting.
I'm another casual player that hasn't played in any professional tournaments but loves to watch coverage. Since discovering channel fireball i have spent a lot more money buying packs then i had in years. From 2004-2009 i bought 0. After reading about pro play and how much the game can reward you I've bought boxes of every set. Its the same as the lottery. Just the possibility of getting something back more than a chase rare you can't really sell for full value makes it appealing.
I know I'll never make the pro scene because I can't invest enough money and time as a grad student. I'm fine with that. But this announcement has me really worried, because I love watching the coverage and seeing big names like LSV and PV do well. If this new system means that it's a bunch of random grinders making it to Worlds and the big names can't justify travelling to GPs under the "new" PPC, then I very highly doubt I'll be watching coverage anymore.
As someone who has played magic for a long time since i was little, ive always wanted to just take it to the next level beyond the FNM and play in bigger tournaments but i feel they are just making it harder for us to do so. card prices are a different story.
@NeoSinProductions normally I'd agree with you (i don't mind jace, mythics, even sfm was probably not the end of the world), but scrapping the pro player's club and not telling the pros what they're replacing it with, and not replacing it with anything until 2013 is really a bad idea.
The lack of a pro tour makes me want to play less magic. I like playing toward a goal and protour is a goal that gives back. Planeswalker points seem to benefit less skilled players. I don't like the fact that I can win 5 tournaments in a row, but some kid that wins 50% of the time is ranked higher than I am.
@shaman. You are wrong. Just because this hurts pros doesn't mean it helps casuals. Everyone is hurt. There are less spots and the spots left heavily favor super grinders.
From the point of a casual magic player with dreams of being a pro, this system change actually makes since. (sort of) I see it as a way for ppl like me to catch up to the guys who have been playing professionally for years.
I hail from Western Canada (a country that gets screwed by wizards/hasbro's trading policies) and there are seldom if ever PTQ's held within a viable distance for me to attend.
