He is in touch with the humane, he seeks the basic human fulfillment, but he tries to extract emotion and meaning in an inhumane way, since the people and life that surround him are inhumane as well.
The breakup is a clear indication of that. He is looking for a normal relationship and not a trophy wife and that is what is annoying him so much.

To me it feels like all of Christian's past oscar-worthy performances in films such as American Psycho, The Prestige, Rescue Dawn, The Machinist etc were finally appreciated and recognised when he won his far overdue Oscar for The Fighter. That one award holds so much value now.
