If amendments and propositions such as these pass they can also take away civil unions and domestic partnerships, just look at Florida's amendment 2. Plus to limit two peoples right to marry based on the gender of their spouse is discriminatory, plain and simple.

A UK civil partnership is a marriage in all but name - people have exactly the same rights as a married couple (tax, inheritance, pension rights etc) but officially it isn't referred to in any document as a 'marriage'. But AFAIK most gay couples say 'we're getting married' so the effect is the same. Perhaps in later years, when the numbers build up, the government will allow the partnership to be officially called 'marriage' but I'm not aware of concerted pressure to do so at the moment.

Oh, this is so much fun. Marriage hasn't always been a religious act. Back a long long time ago, man needed a system to deal with granting property rights, and to protect bloodlines. In comes marriage! Now, the way marriage was dealt with, and how it occurred varied between societies...but one thing is for certain, it was a legal institution; the religious part came later. If you want to update your knowledge, a simple internet search, or, heaven forbid, cracking open a book, will suffice.

If Church wants to keep intolerant toward gay marriage, then so be it. I believe it's their right to not perform religious ritual that are against their scripture.
But in front of law gay couples should be equal. We can choose not to belong to certain (or any) religion, but we cannot choose what laws we obey and what taxes we pay.

It is sad that laws are passed by creating a false image of future that is implicitly or explicitly claimed to be a result of passing a law. Since they don't want to openly advertize a law as anti-gay (because that's intolerant), they advertize it as pro-hetero. Or as even this would reveal advertizers anti-gay attidute, they market the law just with stuff that's non-related or contradictory to anti-gay laws, such as an image of happy family.

A UK civil partnership is a marriage in all but name - people have exactly the same rights as a married couple (tax, inheritance, pension rights etc) but officially it isn't referred to in any document as a 'marriage'. But AFAIK most gay couples say 'we're getting married' so the effect is the same. Perhaps in later years, when the numbers build up, the government will allow the partnership to be officially called 'marriage' but I'm not aware of concerted pressure to do so at the moment.

that's usually how they get you unfortunately. in california, gay marriage actually passed like may 15th or something, but conservatives are truly to overturn that with prop 8. so arizona people vote no on 102, and california people vote no on 8 :]

Seems like you're old enough to know that marriage is about a partnership in dealing with reality (i.e. everything). If you have co-operative experiences with the person, its all possible. If there is infighting and competition, its hopeless - or at least a bad idea.

I would say that such underhanded tactics are par for the course by religious people and that it is they who are skewing the entire election process! They are willing to lie and deceive for the "Truth". Religious people are frequently forced by their delusions to be dishonest.

I would hope that voters would actually read the fine print of the proposition first, before just blindly saying yes or no. Most propositions that appear on state ballots are worded very strangely, and meant to confuse voters who dont think about reading them thoroughly.

The offspring of animals all have different maturation periods ... the human animal .... eh ... 14, 16, 18 years ... marriage(a promise to stay together) evolved to accommodate that fairly long period.

The original reason for marriage, was the preservation of property. The chastity belt etc were invented to insure the male knew his heir would inherit and not some SCRAWNY BASTARD !!

If you look in the fine print of these adds, you'll see that they are funded by the usual suspects, among them the CPCs. Which makes me wonder: Why are the pro-lifers so fervently homophobic? I mean.... most lesbians will likely never come into any kind of situation (short of rape) where they would want to have an abortion, right? :-D
