If I ever have to swap two opposite edges, I say just start it off with a u2 or D2 to make both pairs, remove both of them, undo your first move, then replace them.

I think that it would help for the speedcubing community to develop more instruction for quickly fixing common mistakes. I misplace slots like the first case *all the time* and if it happened during a competition I would really want to know how to get rid of the problem quickly.
