'...you who go where no one else will dare.'- 2conquer ones own Ego[Mara] 8:25.- this i think is th essence of Self-realization achieved by Siddartha an Mahatma Gandhi. this line affected me profoundly. i think it is indeed, th hardest battle in life.
I dislike all bad things tranlate to woman, because many man also have greed, jealous , selfish and etc........In india many baby girl will kill before because man and woman not equal...
@samewish: I agree with you about the inequality of the society. Women are smart and, sometimes, really strong as much as men are. However, in this movie, I think the five daughters of Maara are "innocent", just only Maara (our ego) is the one who is in charge of every evil deed. :)

nice scene :o), but Sidharta should have accepted architect Mara...he is cool and gifted and everything :o) I thing something was wrong in Gautama's mind you, that kid was too spoiled (LOL)
i love this movie and this is my favorite scene. This movie actually prompted me to start learning more about different religions when I was 9 something I still do. I can almost thank this movie for a lot of what I know and what I am now.
That is a great scene im new to buddhism but this movie i remember a kid and now that i watch it , well it is mind boogling. Have A Great Day To Everyone
All your comments have truth in them, thank you! As a Christian, I have to say that Satan has been misconstrude as well! For me he is not a person but also the darker side that lies in us all. The fallen angel is a symbolic way to show us that.
As Sidartha reached a point where he realized the whole truth of the entire universe and its mechanisms, as a mortal, he will be faced with Temptation and fear . It's like "the farther u go, the thinner the line is between light/dark" in short. It's just my personal interpretation of Mara.
You are wrong. Mara - is an evil malevolent spirit that pursued Buddha all his life and tried to mislead him from his aims of finding the truth. Pretty much Satan- like figure. FYI
Your way of interpreting Mara is true also, but tat is part of the Mythical/Legend-izing misinterpretation, fri. There r many cases where miracles (such as the bowl moving upstream) happen in Buddhist texts, but all of them canot be interpreted as actual events. Many of them are misinterpretations that happend over a long time.
house builder:craving,House:samsaric existence, rafter:passions;ridegepole:ignorance since he dont have all tis there is no reasons to reborn which mean he had reach enlightenment
well correct me if im wrong i think mara is a symbolic evil or limit a wall that the buddha had to break to reach enlightenment. well thats what i think anyway and im not even religious :) great
So when the Buddha spoke of destroying the house, he meant he had escaped the cycle of birth and death by shattering his illusory self, thereby erasing his Karma and bringing to end the chain of causes and effects which so far had been perpetuated by his illusory self, the architect of his many births and deaths. In doing so he had transcended to the highest realm of consciousness, beyond the Universe, not bound anymore by its physical limitations and became liberated or enlightened.
To those of you had trouble understanding the "Architect" comment by Buddha (Keanu Reeves) in the movie, let me try to explain it. The demon Maara is not a real demon like say Satan, to give you something to compare with. This demon according to Buddhism is your illusory self that is in control as long as it is attached to worldly sense objects and is motivated by fear, anger, greed, hatred, pride, jealousy etc.
it would be cool to be enlightened

Judaism : Christianity ; Hinduism : Buddhism
Is this analogy somewhat right?

What some people from a Western background might not understand is that Mara is symbolic. Not a Satan-like figure, but an aspect of your own mind.

I think, it's not about active deception by a deity, but about self-illusion (see also Mpurpo's comment above)
