  • Its okay to want to live a live traveling inthe wild but just make sure you have everything necessary to survive do some good research on the types of food nutrients etc your body needs to survive

  • i live my life the way he did i've been hitchin for 13 years now started when i was 16 and i turned 28 this year and i'm still travelin and livin my life on the road i always keep him in mind and think that hes watchin not only me but other people who choose to life life not in towns or citys but the ones on the road may he rest in peace and god bless

  • I love this man I've seen his movie now a couple of times

And I feel just like him. Over a few years i'm going the same way as he did.

    I just want to live.

  • All you cynics, are just pathetic. The Cat did what he wanted an no longer had to deal with social constraint & petty judgements by dicks like you. Thats diffinitely a good enough reason to escape. All you losers that have taken the time to watch let alone write a comment opposing supertramp free bird syndrome are obviously just lost losers (anti heros) with nothing better to do. To all the supertramp admirers "God Speed dreamers"

  • thanks for this I just finished the great book and wondered about the pics as Jon talked about them but there was none in the book.

  • This is just the most beautiful thing. He is just the most beautiful thing. God bless his soul wherever it flittered away to. I've loved him from the first time I heard his story.

  • everyone is entitled to his own opinion, chris took pictures for others to see, it's a normal human action, it's up to us to interpret, now there's some lessons here pick the good and throw the bad...two reasons why few people made this film, to inspire and to profit....but mostly to profit and less inspiration for the maker, that's my opinion.happy living be observant not all things that you see or hear were true.

  • I can see how a lot of hippys or Americans think highly of this guy because like you this guy was a freeloader. He hitchhiked, ate other peoples food, did a half ass job working at burger king and elsewhere for a very short time with no commitment and left. On top of that he was too stupid to prepare himself for the bush which led to his death. Had he respected the wilderness and didnt have such a big ego thinking he was superman or a big huge rebel he would probably have matured by now.

  • I admire his effort, I really do. hitchhiking is really fun everyone should do it, but any alaskan will tell you to respect nature or it will eat you and spit you out.

  • Here is an important question for you- if Chris McCandless was running from society then why did he take pictures? Why, in the middle of miles of forest, did he live in the only manmade thing anywhere near? His story is more about being young rather than some full scale rejecting society. Like most young men he turned his back on his parents world and went exploring. Maybe it was simply bad luck, or a lack of experience, or even a lack of respect for what he was doing that got him killed.

  • To all of you people who hate him, you call him suicidal, crazy, but you know what i call him, i call him a HERO, the definition of hero, someone you look up to, he was more than a hero, He wanted freedom, He got it, Do you think your free, everyone is strapped down by society, watching this video makes me cry and think, How could all of you hate him, at least have some respect, the man is dead, But he will never truly be dead, for he lives on in our spirits, may he always live on, he died a hero

  • @joey5605 yea he got freedom and he died. Freedom is not hard to obtain so he is anything but a hero. Anybody can quit their job, go off the grid, and walk for miles in thier underwear until they starve so thats hardly being a hero.

  • @SOLIDSNAKEXXX360 ya and have you grabbed and held onto your dream? He did and he died happy look at his last self portrait when he knew he was going to die... He ate a molded sead... that what piosoned him... an expert botonist would have trouble knowing that danger so sir i say to you... keep sitting at home doing nothing but talk shit. He died happy and lived his dream. ANYone who chases their dream is a hero especially such a dangerous one i have much respect for him.

  • I think it's odd that this man gave away his money and went to live in the wilderness to be 'free'. I think that while he was living in this way he was less free and his life was more constricted than ever before. He had to spend virtually every waking moment hunting and gathering food just to survive.

Across the world millions of people live hand to mouth from the land like this, I think for them the novelty wears off pretty quickly.

  • Who knows what this kid really did or not Hollywood always takes a story and adds a bunch of stupid social engineering or politically motivated messages . I'd say this guy did what lots of us have done when we were 18 went on an adventure except

Most of us grow up at some point and conform, sorry EMO's that's how the world works .

  • @jdddehoff

The key word in your response is "Conform" and thats just sad, sorry to say. I believe this is exactly what Christopher was trying to avoid, and for good reason. Not everyone wants to follow blindly like sheep ! Problem is, most people do, because it's easier that way. And we all know the world is becoming a better place because of that "conformity" , right ???

  • this guy is a true definition of self made his spirit will be one forever and, not broken pieces or fragments of him self or his dream. care about your yourself and you will care for all

  • he was smarter than he is given credit for. yes he was cavalier and he paid for it with his life. not flat out stupid though. or mentally ill.

  • What a true inspiration.

  • He abandoned the ones that cared about him and comitted suicide.

  • He had a map with him. This map showed the Denali park road about 10 miles away from the bus where he stayed. It wouldn't have been an easy hike, but it was certainly doable … especially considering it's over 20 miles to get to the bus by the route he originally took.

  • and he ate thwe alskan sweet pea which paralizys u and stavres umore nad evuly untreadted leads to death eat a cople hikeing and find ur self barley able to move thetry n read a mapand walk 12 hrs feling weak n sick n tired n metaly drain imposible not his his fault would hav made it another 2 weeks if hadnt eatn those plants wold hav barly made 2 weeks and hunters would hav helpds him

  • Chris had a clear vision of were his life was going for a long time. What separates him from the other 98% percent of society is that he actually had the balls to "do it" rather than just talk about it, Fly high brother, there are still a few of us that feel the same way & we will see you soon bro!!

  • At least he died happy(I think), that's all that matters.

  • as heroic chris might seem, the romanticized journey that he embarked was utterly foolish he could have lived if he hadnt thrown out his map and bought a compass. he completely underestimated mother nature.

  • @martijn447 he had a map he ate sum posin shit narowly survied tht whick kiled his strenght and cognitvie abiltys to evan read the map or walk th 12 miles to the ranger station he waited out for way too long by the time he paniced he was too weak to react in the back of his head he knew he was gunna die once he was poisond he evan took 1last pic with a card not sucide the sicumtance lead him to death

  • It was really foolish to attempt living and surviving in Alaska without a good map. He never wanted to die there, he was searching for a way out but couldn't find it without a map. In Alaska a map is just a basic tool, just like his rifle and machete. People say he wanted to experience ultimate freedom and that's why he didn't take a map with him. But that's not true, in a quest for ultimate freedom he shouldn't have taken a rifle and other man made materials with him. But still he did.

  • @martijn447 See that shows that we are not animals but are from a seperate breed. We humans cannot survive in the wild without manmade things even in the begining we had tools and fire for hunting unlike even the smallest rodent. Kinda shows there is a god or we wouldn't be here....

  • Interesting in real freedom ? please read "escape from freedom" by Eric Fromm !Then ...if freedom is mean living in the wild...and you belive this way of living can make you happy ...there are many places where you can go to live this kind of life with out put youself in danger and still keep contact with who you love ! I my opinion "Supertramp" was very hard with himself and had some sorrow from his life , he wanted to live on the edge...and he was childish because he lost his life !

  • We are all submersed within a finite material realm. Something deep inside all of us tells that this is not natural because we came from the infinite. Especially true when material is manipulated or man-made. We can fell more of a disconnect. Infinity represents truth and the finite mostly represents the false. Live as close to Nature as possible. Practice a macrobiotic way of life to fully know the absolutes of health, happiness, freedom, justice and peace.

  • '' Happiness only real when shared ''

  • I see this guy as a living artistic expression. He’s well suited in the time he was living. He’s the 90’s. Where there still were, at least, a yell, a rebellion and US guys were the first understanding the beginning of crisis (and…that is not a case!). This current time not only defied even this, but its faithful sons have been totally brainwashed by this weak society. See all the hate - or disrespectful - comments about this wonderful human being. Shame on all of you.

  • @TempusDiei its MTV man i tell you, im 16 and feel as though i was born in the wrong time, i like old music like led zeppelin and jimi hendrix, i dont need a cell phone or a tv i just want to live in a time of acceptance like the 70s, today you eiher live like jersey shore idiots or get shunned from society and they put a medical term on you like antisocial, its bull shit

  • @TempusDiei I couldn't agree more this decade is nothing like the 90's. I miss the 90's

  • i respect this man, but this actually to everyone, i think we lost our place in the wild somwhere between mcdonalds, and wii fitness...

  • Google: "10 True Facts about Chris McCandless"

  • Oh life, all of my heroes are dead!

  • Goodbye Chris, I hope we meet in heaven, you're a KING to me.

  • What a great inspiration. I feel sorry for people that don't get it.

  • SEM PALAVRAS PRA ESSA HISTORIA

MEO DEUS CUIDE BEM DE VC

Q QUANDO EU TE VER AE NO CEU QUERO TE DAR UM ABRAÇO MEO

ESSA HISTORIA ME ENSINO MUITO PODE CRER ..

  • I'm currently reading Into the wild. I would think to myself "Wow, how stupid is this person?!" But now that I've watched these documentaries and dedication videos, I feel that what McCandless did was right and what he wanted, he did! He must be proud.

  • Finding real inner peace comes from lessons through mother nature, Chris knew this!!

  • Thank God this self-absorbed dumbass hippie is gone. Kids - this is what reading too much Nietzsche, Tolstoy, and Thoreau will get you - a lonely death in a decrepit bus in the middle of nowhere. Good riddance poor little rich boy. I guess you got what you were looking for - LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

  • @ghostoferkrussell dude, your talking about a real person who has family and friends who love him. show some god damn respect

  • @BleedTheFreak01 - This guy was a moron. Only morons exalt other morons for doing moronic things like trying to live in the Alaskan bush without a compass or map. LOL @ the dead hippie!

  • @ghostoferkrussell Fuck you! Its because of rude people like you why he wanted to live far away into the wild.

  • @KISSMEMYFOOL69 - He is dead in his stupid bus. Should have brought a map. Shitty movie as well. Sean Penn is a fag.

  • @ghostoferkrussell

Hell, none of us will see you there.

  • @iluvyouwyatt - If you do see me, I will have a compass and map - unlike your dead faggot friend Christopher McCandless.

  • lol 1:30

  • McCandlesses...grande!!..los sueños deben cumplirse incluso a costa de uno mismo!.

  • kinda looked like wolverine near the end

  • Sad that he didn't think this through properly. I think he truly wanted to die in the beginning or he wouldn't had given away his money and ditched his car and ignored his parents. I mean, had he thought he could live the rest of his life like 'Grizzly Adams' why wouldn't he prepare better, he didn't even have a compass! Why wouldn't you use the 24 grand to buy supplies from time to time when needed? I personally think he was fed up with humanity and decided to find beauty in nature.

  • no cigrarettes? first off smoking is for loser people who cant deal with life like this dumbass who at the last minute pleaded for his life...yeah pure freedom alright if only the fucktard walked in the right direction he would still be in a psychaitric ward

  • @SOLIDSNAKEXXX360 The "no phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes" line is from Roger Miller's song, "King of the Road".

  • @SOLIDSNAKEXXX360 god bless you

  • Pure inspiration and example...

  • You know what's Supertramp's biggest mistake?

Didn't bang that 16 yrs old chick.

  • ese hombre es incle ble me inspira a aser lo mismo

  • He LIVED!

  • Ultimate Freedom...

  • That's retarded. Atleast prepare yourself for this type of trip. Too many Daredevils on this planet. he never got to know himself. Hell I can just go out and start wondering around. That's nothing!!

  • Chris McCandless was a self-propelling first-motion; a speer-head of evolution; a super-human spirit with unfettered courage! - whose genius is matched only by the superb song writing of Eddie Vedder. Wow!

  • Freedom comes with that first step into the wild.

  • wow. i have no words to say!

  • this guys an idiot there no freedom the way this guy did this thing... watch alone in the wilderness documentary with dick proenneke and you all will see true alaskan freedom, not some dumb kid who abandoned his family and starved to death

  • what a beautiful person

  • the guy was an idiot!

  • @rowwalsh101 agreed

  • He disconnected and went back to the primitive. With a gun and an abandoned bus.

  • Good Memory's Never Lost .

    Christopher Johnson McCandless R.I.P. (February 12, 1968 - August 18, 1992)

We Love You (Chris) ! .

  • he's a big inspiration to everyone!!! i'd like to do the same, i'm sick of everything!!!

  • This video montage is a honorable tribute to Alex Supertramp and his adventerous spirit. His is an inspiration to humankind. He teaches us the value of freeing the mind of the ties that bind us.

  • Where can I find his journal ? Respect to Chris !

  • He died very scared he didn´t want to die like this.

  • an amazing person

  • Loved the movie. Loved the book.

Glad I found it. Where was I when this movie first came out?

  • id much rather of lived McCandlesses life and starve to death alone in a bus then live till 80 after working 55 years at some boring 9-5 job that i could careless about..living some hopeless existence watching american idol

  • @ToninoTomasino so.... which life are you living right now?

  • @ToninoTomasino -So, what's stopping you?

  • @ToninoTomasino yeah, or you could do neither. Its not as if they are the only two options. What McCandless did was grossly inconsiderate, and incredibly selfish. he lived entirely for himself. To quote Joe Strummer "without people you're nothing". This is what McCandless is, a huge nothing,.

  • @threefinker1 Yeah because joe strummer is the guy to listen to. Everyone lives for themselves stupid.

  • @threefinker1

if everyone was like McCandless in the first place, he would love everyone to be out there with him, living the good life, trust me...

  • @ToninoTomasino so go for it.. see ya

  • @ToninoTomasino how are are you? Are you starving to death or did you choose to work 9-5 job for another 55 years?

  • @lukezius

Good point. Too many idiot don't seem to grasp you can have a happy and full life without dying needlessly like a moron.

  • @lukezius

Im doing just fine thanks! :) Believe it or not dieing on a bus via starvation and working 9-5 for 55 years arent your only choices in life LMAO

  • @ToninoTomasino Then get off your computer, and find your front door, and never look back...

  • @ToninoTomasino Okay, bye!!

  • @ToninoTomasino So true. Te last vestige of REAL freedom is in what is left of our American wilderness. You're never lonely finding original solitude and fortitude.

God eternally bless those who love and preserve our natural heritage.

  • @ToninoTomasino You don't get it. Sure, those superficial things kept McCandless out of society's grasp. But what he realizes at the end is that there is a plethora of good people in the world. The best times in his life was when he interacted with people. Happiness is only real when shared with others. Don't let life's unfortunate realities disenfranchise you from the real purpose of it- human relationship.

  • @vbar44 I totally agree with you vbar44. I've just watched the movie "INTO THE WILD3 which really touched me.

  • @vbar44 Can't live with people, can't live without them. It's the existential predicament.

  • @ToninoTomasino Yeah live the dream, go to alaske n starve to death!

  • @ToninoTomasino lol anarchist much?

  • @ToninoTomasino hahaha lol you r so real

  • He died doing what he loved.......

  • @RexDawg007 starving to death

  • The very civilization he was trying to escape.

  • Chris did have the right survival skills. It was a 12 hour hike out of the trail onto a rarely used dirt road. Either the poisonous plants that weakened him or just plain starvation. I believe that anyone with that kind of passion would rather spend their last days in freedom as opposed to dying in a hospital.

  • im sorry but if chris actually did his research on how to survive in alaska he could have made it out... when he tried to cross a river and realized it had grown considerably since he had last been there (common sense, melted snow coming off mountains) there was a hand operated tram 1/4 of a mile away from where he was.

  • @colenbrak i don't think he gave a shit. he just loved being free.

  • @littlecooney13 yeah im pretty sure he didnt want to starve to death, im pretty sure nobody wants that.

  • @littlecooney13 yeah im pretty sure he didnt want to starve to death, im pretty sure nobody wants that.

  • Just watched the film there and it was extremely well done and made you love the guy. Id love to know what happened to all the people he met on his travels...

  • The book from Jon Krakauer says a lot about all the other guys. It's lake the b-side of the movie, loved it, fully recommendable

  • Nice vid - I love the legacy of McCandless and all the other great people out there adventuring!

  • tears

  • WOW go to google maps and type in: Christopher McCandless

you can actually see the bus !!!!

  • @hellokittyy3 absoluty perfect!!!

  • hellokit, i guess you think your death will be 'cool'

  • Exelent video!

    Exelente video!:p

  • make u your better world!!! open your mind and move it

  • so what? 99% of all people in the world dont do shit to make the world a better place, are they all self indulgent losers? or does having a wife and kids and a 9 to 5 job make the world better in your opinion?

  • bravo!!! I love your comment..

  • @jvalver you are heartless.

  • Chris said he lead a happy life, and that is what everyone must do, dont judge people on what they decide will make them happy.

  • so beautiful

  • Most in his position would slave for money and materialism, He tossed that shit away..Everyones a victim to the bureacracy, common sense and technology show we can do much better, yet we dont proceed, evolve or demand it..A society of comformist and followers who dont seek to deal with real issues, they just watch tv,news,advertising,lies..Mass artificial drama like men beating eachother in a cage..One man should be a congressman if we dare pay attention..Or its distracting a world from "REALITY".

  • Its amazing, how happy he looks in all the pics though being completele alone..

  • R.I.P

  • college, what a waste of money these days. lets go for a degree that everyone else is shooting after. then have the paper work but no promise of work. good planning. people, experience is the best teacher. you fools that think ur so smart cause u learned from a book. what till reality hits. you'll wish u had reached deep inside and found your inner self. not your shallow self.

  • Such true words, I'm in college now and half of my courses are just a waste of time. Its all about money these days. I know for a fact I would learn more 1 month on the job then my 3 year course !

  • You're just so right. The only real teacher is Life itself.

  • why dont you do it ?????

  • he was a true philosopher and extremist who could see past conformity, conservatism, and security. he lived life the way we should really live.

  • He wasn't a philosopher and an extremist he was more of a fan of the philosophy he believed in. He didn't do anything extreme but tramped and camped in the woods.

  • you should read some of his quotes though that he thought of by himself not by emerson

  • Quotes doesn't make you a philosopher. most of the quotes you read about him is just derived and edited from his favorite books. If quotes can make one a philosopher, so then indeed, we all are.

  • i think whoever tries to find true meaning in there own universe is a philosopher

  • If Chris became famous, if some us love and admire him, it's because he went in search of that which we all lost when we became civilized, and found it. And yes, he died. So what? We will all die. He had a good and happy life. If it was long or short, that doesn't matter.

  • exactly people get so caught up in what might happen and loose sight of the real adventure in life

  • Я хотел бы такую жизнь...

  • agrees with smarty358

  • no offence but he really wasnt smart. i respect him for his transcendalist ideas but going into alaska without knowing a map or good clothing proves how stupid he was. and giving all his money from his savings account wasnt smart either(he had no right to, his parents worked hard for him)

  • No offence, but you don't get his point. He said "nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future". I can see that your username is "smarty" but Chris' point wasn't being smart.. May be it was being wise (which is clearly not the same as smart) or feeling really alive. He deliberately avoided security. He died young, but lived life at its full. And in the end our lives are all so short, who cares who lives a year more, a year less? Thanks for ever Chris

  • i wrote that as my facebook status and your right, they just dont get it :)

  • What an amazing and brave man-with the drive that most of us could only ever dream of. The people and places he got to see must have been the biggest mind trip that most will never be able to experience. I envy him, and celebrate to have learned his story. His story amazing, beautiful, and scary all at the same time. How lucky we all were to have learned about it.

  • The best things in life are free...

  • RIP..Alexander Supertramp

  • Respect to Chris.

He really lived. Not many people in this world are able to do that.

What he did was real, no fake. Authenticity you find not often in todays society. In TV you see mostly posers who think they are the greatest.

His story is a big inspiration.

  • @trapper808 couldn't agree with you more! He's a big example!

  • Yep, I totally agree with you.

  • @trapper808

I think PART of his story is an inspiration. The fact that a map and compass could have saved his life and taken him to a way to cross the river 1/4 mile up, makes the story almost irritating. He could have taken his new-found appreciation for life and used it in some way, or at least shared it with others. Instead, he died at the age of 24, and people romanticize his death as if it were heroic. Though I bet his trials and ideas were inspirational. Or would've been, had he lived.

  • @Complete180 theres no inspiratation in this guy, if you havent already, look for a documentary called alone in the wilderness with dick proenneke

  • Comment removed

  • Now I do think he was some what wrong not talking to his family, but, can you blame him. His father had a kid with his first wife after chris was born. I come from a good family so i woudnt know, but that has be tough. So can you really blame him?

  • Everyone says he was so stupid because he didnt bring a map with him when he went into the Alaskan bush. He didnt take a map wih him because he wanted to become "lost in the wild". I wish everyone could see that Chris took alot more risks than most people. Most people play it safe and follow the rules therefore they miss out on alot in life.

  • very true.. and alot of people from Alaska dont like him because he reminds them of their past selves.

  • tout comprendre c'est tout pardonner

    don't not judge him

  • perhaps his passion for his ideals overcame any common sense he might have had when he decided to hike west on the stampede trail. it sounds like he was a bit unprepared. however i respect him very much. i can relate to his thoughts and actions in so many ways. he did what he believed in and felt glorious doing so. I know he was living his dream. He knew the consequences. Respects.

  • You are so ignorant, you're not getting the point. He didnt commit suicide, its not like he wanted to die out there. I know you have never been more then ten feet from civilization but shit happens in the wild. And as far as the publishers of into the wild, how the hell would he know that they were going to make a movie after him. Take your PHD and make a bunch a money and take everything for granted but leave the people who respect the little in life alone

  • Chris sure didn't respect his family- he left them hanging for 2 years, sounds pretty selfish to me.

  • I'm not sure if you have read the book, but he had his reasons. If it were not for a couple of mistakes (the wild potato roots and the way over the river) he would have made it. Peace.

  • you are selfish in not seeing that they 'abandoned' him first.

  • You have obviously taken the obedient road of life following the rules, obeying your masters and never knowing or ever seeking any true freedom or adventure. Enjoy your rules and task masters and at the end of your life make sure you pat yourself on the back for being a good, compliant slave to the system.

  • Actually I have not followed the "masters" that you speak of... I have lived on in 9 different countries and have summited more mountains and run more rivers than most men my age-29. All I'm saying is that starving to death in a bus doesn't sound like a great adventure, it sounds like a ill-planned one.

  • I know so many idiots who went to college and graduated... why should I respect anyone because of that? I respect some graduate people I know, but not for having graduated... I would respect them the same if they had not. You're such an asshole and your life is so small. "There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in your... " "Philosophy", said Hamlet, but in your case what should I say? Average mind?
