It's hard to imagine anyone not loving what DiStefano does here. He is one of the most impassioned, gifted lyric tenors who ever lived, and this is heart breaking. Bravo, Giuseppe.
There are many people criticizing DiStefano here, saying that he is too open & its damaging. Open or close, really doesn't matter because it really works in this particular performance. This is an example of Di Stefano singing beautifully& still being critcized as if he is not singing well.He is a lyric tenor but sings this aria extremely well in spite of the amateur critical statements.I saw Di Stefano live in the early 60s& his voice was beautiful, round&full, just the way you hear it here.Enjoy.
This is way more emotional than for eg pavarotti, the latter mostly seems to belt it out like a bulldozer wrecking an old house. I really like this version. Opera isn´t all about power, you need to control it to, like Jussi did.
very nice, it would be nice if someone made a playlist for this stuff :) hint hint, cmon gotta be someone obsessed with opera to make me a nice youtube playlist to take me through the greats

@grunge0815 Mmmmm, let me think about!... Pavarotti's waves on his voice sounds amazing, as a mangetic waves, and in di stefano's voice doesnt marks as clarity or strong as pav did.
del Monaco was Canio? Please...di Stefano, Kraus, Bjorling and others were singing. del Monaco was yelling, shouting, screaming. Although I regret that di Stefano had such few good years, those years mean more to music than 20 del Monacos.
Those high A's are so beautifully dramatic and convincingly show his despair at the aria's climax. On the other hand, they are extremely weighted on the throat. It is, on occasion, OK to sacrifice technique for emotion. In Guiseppe's case, he was a culprit of this too often.
@phatphace Very well said - sacrifice technique for emotion. But what does a listener love in opera? Technique or emotion? I think the answer is quite clear. That's why he was so great.

thanks for this upload!!!! this was one of the songs i just cant never find on youtube...maybe i have always spelled the name of the song wrong?? but anyway THIS IS CLASSIC=)
It's the open and shouted style of singing, di Stefano demonstrates here, that ultimately ruined his voice. He might've lasted longer, had he covered his tones and performed the right repertoire.
it's the open vouels to make di stefano more "believable" than other tenors....I'm an italian....when I speak I say ridi pagliAccio and not ridi pagliOccio....all the tenors sing it wrongly...I'm sorry but I must deny what you re sayng...better 10 years perfect singing than 30 years middle-way (and with bad diction)singing
I disagree with what you are saying here. From a standpoint of singing Pippo is singing this incorrectly. From a linguistic standpoint you are correct, his open vowels are italianate and perfect- but this contributes to the breakdown of acoustics and the head register. The breath does not go into a proper singer's phonation, TALL vowels (one's that travel up into the head) I am not saying that your preferences are incorrect at all, just that Pippo's technique was-and enabled his ruination.
I disagree with your statement. opera singing is something "unsingable" for human beeings...So a way has been invented to "pretend" to be singing ...and all tenors in reality don't sing it...they get around it...the only one who really SUNG opera was Di stefano....at the cost of not lasting for a long time...but i prefer 15 year real and breathtaking singing than 30 yars of fake singing
@Nello7 It's the results I care about - whats the point of having a long but unexciting career? a poem best describes Pippo's career - "My candle burns at both its ends, it will not last the night - but ah my foes and oh my friends - it makes a lovely light."
No one is arguing whether or not Di Stefano was a great singer. His voice by natural selection did not carry the thrust or weight required in singing this role. This is a fact. I suppose he could sing Siegmund and you'd accept that he was the greatest of all time as well. That would only mean that while you love Di Stefano (as do I) you don't understand the vocal requirements that goes with selecting the proper literature. While he was a great artist his voice lacked dramatic colors.
@Nello7 Pippo was a dramatic tenor in a lyric body. He sang from his heart and soul - he was an interprative genius and always had the mood and character correct. Did he make mistakes? Yes - Would he have done things (hindsight) differently? NO! He went with his heart and that is why people loved him, there was no compromise in him he always sang at 100%. There was no one like him before and there will never be another. I would listen to this man sing the ingredients of Cool Whip.
"I would listen to this man sing the ingredients of Cool Whip."- That is one of the funniest things I have ever heard! I don't disagree with that. Let's make one thing clear though: Pippo was NOT ever a dramatic tenor in the sense of fach. He sang with the greatest sense of style perhaps ever of any tenor, save for Caruso and Bergonzi.
@fabriou There are examples of Di Stefano covering.Perhaps not as much as most tenors. However he does cover A Te O Cara 1952 Cielo E Mar, O Tu Che Seno Agli Angeli1956,Speaking Italian&singing Italian is not really the same. As speaking Neoplitan is not sung as it is spoken.Even your example of Ridi PagliAccio&PagliOccio,The PagliOccio when sung will really sound like PagliAccio&will help protect the voice.Di Stefano new how to cover, but chose not to.He also sounded beautiful when covering.Enjoy
do you think that it's his vocal technique that ruined his voice ? It might... but it's probably mainly because he sang roles that were too heavy for him. I personally feel as if he's only not covering as much as most tenors on his high notes, which is not in itself bad for the voice. But no matter what, I agree his sound was amazing. :)
Actually he used the same tecnique (sung openly at high) which Gigli did and Gigli' voice remained fresh for many years. Of course, Pippo's voice was more robust, but certainly Gigli's didn't passed night after night playing billiards and smoking like a chimney.
I cannot stop listening to and watching this video. DiStefano's vocal skills are breath taking: after Caruso's version, which is very different, the heart, warmth, musicial brilliance and raw emotion of this version are just stunning. Among the lyric tenors, DiStefano is my absolute favorite. He is as close to perfection as it gets.
May I say bravo to you jd1960. I have seen some wonderful Vesti's on you tube. Then
I view this one by Pippo again, and I once again realize how wonderful he was. He is absolutely at his peak here. Breath taking it is jd. He is sorely missed in this world. Riposa in pace Giuseppe!
Di Stefano is what opera rarely get - a "two-fer"
2 things for the price of one. An amazing voice
AND GREAT acting. Josep Carreras and Natalie Dessay are also always "two-fers". I think Di Stefano had a fairly happy life, which shows the saying "break a mirror - 7 years bad luck." is absolute nonsense. I assume this production went through a lot of mirrors.
(It used to take a poor person 7 years to afford to replace a little mirror a few centuries ago.)
I"m always amazed that an adult human being would take the time to log in and write "loser" and "cretin". It's like throwing rocks through a window and running away. This is a remarkable Pagliacci, an almost thankless effort as the great Caruso defined it. With a voice much more lyric than dramatic, DiStefano summons up the power and emotion to leave a truly compelling and heart-breaking Pagliaccio. One of the handfull of great, great tenors. Bravo, Pipo.
Bless Pippo's Sicilian heart, he wanted to sing these roles that didin't fit his voice, but did fit his personality. This Pag is gorgeous, tho', deeply moving. We will miss him.
His interpretation is excellent, but I believe (my perspective, do not criticize it) Plácido Domingo's and Pavarotti's interpretations establish a great difference between excellent and godlike.
Stefano isn't my absolute favorite singer, but this is my favorite performance of Vesti la Giubba. incredibe interpretation & feeling behind everything. looove the mirror shattering too, just puts the final touch on a great song.
maestro nicola rescigno said pipo was empty musically and he didn't know the rolls he was playing, sorry ,maetro,i think only empty thing is your head and you didn't know what you were talking about
Please do elaborate your accusation about my knowledge in opera. If you wish to initiate a debate on opera, I am all ears but your ignorantly insane comment reflects directly back at yourself how dumbfound you are.

I love the sound that Di Stephano was able to achieve, but it came at a heavy price. Attacking the notes like that causes serious strain.
Chivalryaintdead 2 years ago
do you think that it's his vocal technique that ruined his voice ? It might... but it's probably mainly because he sang roles that were too heavy for him. I personally feel as if he's only not covering as much as most tenors on his high notes, which is not in itself bad for the voice. But no matter what, I agree his sound was amazing. :)

@tenor9216
Actually he used the same tecnique (sung openly at high) which Gigli did and Gigli' voice remained fresh for many years. Of course, Pippo's voice was more robust, but certainly Gigli's didn't passed night after night playing billiards and smoking like a chimney.

This is my favorite aria, and this video is the best one demonstrating the beauty of a good performance.
I wish I could give this clip a 1,000 star rating.
Absolute masterpiece on many levels.
It's shameful that such good quality entertainment isn't appreciated these days by the masses.

@JeanBabtisteGrenoui His face should be painted but they wanted him to look pretty and handsome. Masterpieces don't compromise.
