@encorporadow it is a Digital camera but it's doing better video than most camcorder on the market at the same price. If you can manually focus a camera you'll get much better picture quality
I understand, however, people need to know that they should not base their reviews on the video quality it produces but rather the image quality of the photos. People should appreciate what canon has done for them by integrating 1080p video on their latest DSLRs instead of complaining that it only does 20fps @ 1080p. You can't find other DSLRs out there that has the same capability, better yet 1080p recording, not till T2i anyway.
should I buy this DSLR? I have a Sony Camcorder DCR-SR40, and the video quality is really shite. I like taking pictures too but I want something good. Could the T1i be my Cam?
I have to agree with a1mint; before long, camcorders will be dead. I do freelance work for a high-end videography business (clients including Fujifilm), and we use a Sony EX1 HD camera, and the boss bought a Canon 5D MKII a couple of weeks ago to add more perspective with 2 cameras filming at the same time. Also, theres so many more options you have with interchangeable lenses. The HD is more than comparable and the cameras' a lot cheaper than buying a new Sony EX1. Results are AWESOME!
ATTENTION PLEASE - this is video recorded by a DSLR CAMERA. It is an amazing camera that produces professional photographs. The HD video is an EXTRA feature. People DO NOT buy this camera as a CAMCORDER. So before making stupid comments, consider what this video actually is - one of the first DSLRs to record video!!!
As DSLR's are becoming more and more consumer products and computer hardware becomes better and cheaper, video is quickly becoming a standard feature.
Of course camcorders will be around for a long time. As I said, DSLR sensors capture streaming video in a completely different way that affects the image in a negative way. To change this, you would have to design an SLR to be just like a camcorder. But whats the point of that? It would ruin the photographic image quality & we already have camcorders.
The only issue I see needing to be addressed is the rolling shutter. I've seen video from DSLR's (eg. Canon 5D Mark II) surpassing anything any consumer camcorder has ever achieved.
You'll see more and more of these HD logos appear on the DSLR cameras coming out. People really want to see the incredible video, especially in low light and with more vibrant and accurate colors, and see it combined.
If one manufacturer won't (for religious reasons perhaps), then another will. It's coming !
I disagree, camcorders will be around for a long time, who would buy a DSLR just for taking video. Someone who buys a DSLR will want it for the photography not its amazing video. And you cant take pictures with a DSLR while shooting video.
If a good camcorder costs $800, and a good DSLR that takes much better video that that camcorder, and costs $1000, would it not be worth spending that extra $200 to get everything in one package?
If you want to take a picture, stop the video, take a picture. Perhaps they'll even add a feature to do it automatically for you just for you.
Anyone who finds that the quality to price ratio is better than for other options in its video ability. I found the Panasonic GH1 was able to produce video just as good as the Red one but for a much much lower price.
I'd say no. You can get a 120GB Sony Handycam HD with a manual focus dial for $400-ish more (as long as you aren't in it for the crazy amount of lens options).
does the sensor in the camera heat up after prolonged video sessions and does it degrade the picture quality over time because of constant use of the video mode?
Who cares? it's obviously NOT a camcorder. If you want a great DSLR that also records HD video at a ridiculous frame rate, THEN EXPECT TO PAY 4 THOUSAND DOLLARS. If you can't afford it then stop bitching about it. Don't expect perfect video from a reasonable priced DSLR.
Standard cinema is 24 fps. I personally don't like the look of extremely fast frame rate, looks too sharp and false.
I don't know why you're comparing a DSLR to a camcorder. An extremely good HD camcorder will cost you at least a grand... so... if you want that, buy a camcorder. Why judge a photographic camera on an extra feature? which in fact happens to be really good quality and looks great and I will use it almost every day
I think soon, DSLR's will overtake camcorders. Bigger CMOS chip, less low light noise, exchangeable lenses, greater depth of field, etc. Canon is getting close, but they're playing games keeping the good video features in the upper camera price range (eg. 2k+).
But as the competition continues, HD video will become a dime a dozen on DSLR's I think.
I bet next year I'll sell my camcorder and upgrade my DSLR to one with full HD 60p.
But anything below 60p I will not touch because it's notsmooth
But SLR sensors will never be ideal for recording video. The readout of the sensor means movies are created with a rolling shutter (horizontal lines of the image are scanned, one after another, rather than the whole scene being grabbed in one go). The upshot is that verticals can be skewed if the camera (or the subject) moves too fast - the top of the image has been recorded earlier than the bottom, so moving vertical lines can be rendered as diagonals.
I've seen the rolling shutter effect on various sample videos and it is indeed an issue. Some have it worse than others. The Nikon one was the worst I've ever seen (the D90 was it?).
It might be possible to use a secondary buffer internally. Possibly without much hardware and some software it might be possible to fix this problem.
@arepepe I am not entire sure I believe youtube will allow you to configure what resolution you want and it seems (from the comment below) it also does 720p recording (youtube seemingly supports both resolutions) (go check the specs to verify that statement as far as being able to record at 720p, 30fps) but 1080p is better lol ;) but 20fps is not as good and you may not stuttering in fast paced situations but it depends on what your recording for
is this sped up? because i looked at the same video with the sony A33 and in this one the train seemed to be moving faster.

if you take at 720p, you will have great video quality at 30fps
veggiet2009 2 years ago 16
Not quite 1080p. Some vertical, lots of horizontal resolution lost.
Also, 30 fps is only half of the smoothness of the average camcorder which does 60 (albeit interlaced - which btw, can be converted to 60p)
a1mint 2 years ago
Because we all know Hollywood movies are shot at insanely high frame rates no matter what scene it is...
Ever watch Slumdog Millionaire? They shot some scenes in 12FPS... yes you heard me, TWELVE EFF PEE ESS

And standard cinema is awful. Every busy scene looks like a freaking mess. Panning the camera is practically unwatchable.
My point is that DSLR's will soon offer real 60p full HD. And it will look razor sharp and picture perfect smooth.
The camera on display here is not good for video. 20 fps is not good, 24 fps is not good, and 30 fps is still not as good as 60 fps.
a1mint 2 years ago
