The device of repeating the slow, tender opening theme before swelling and cantering into the second (more uplifting) theme is very Sibelian, it would seem, and reminds me of the opening of 'Lemminkainen and the Maidens of Saari'.
This is truly my favourite of the seven symphonies by the great Finnish master.
An underated symphony but so beautiful. The opening is a little slower than other versions I've heard: I rather like! I first heard this music late at night on BBC Radio 3
when the midsummer northern sky was glowing. Anyone know who the conductor is?
I enjoyed the beginning very much.

Uh, so feeble--where's the depth? If Grieg is pink bonbons stuffed with snow, what does that make Sibelius?

@MyMeatYearns4Andrea From your idiotic opinions and even more moronic user id, I think it is safe to say we all think you are an inbred fool.

There ought to be some description of the performers. This isn't Colin Davis, but Vladimir Ashkenazy with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Decca label.

Mystically ethereal, yet somehow enigmatic, this is one of my favorite Sibelius
works. The opening is like radiant light suffusing the sleep of eternity.

It's one of my favorites too; the beginning just gives you shivers like the stillness of a Northern Winter

Its my favourite too. Although I don't listen to classical much.

@novichok3 I couldn't have put it better myself. It's a heartbreaking piece of music.

Urgh, this utter trash. From 6:30 is suitable for some daytime-TV murder-mystery theme music. Total crap.
