I sang along with you. And, er...I'm not a girl, either. I sing Sondheim when I'm unable to practice my swimming.......breath and endurance and diaphragmatic control, y'know. Y'know? He's brilliant, yes, he is. And you're gettin' there.
wow, okay I'm going to be honest: I was bracing myself for this to be awful because...well, as you said, you are not a girl. But I'm pretty impressed. Well done.
My only complaint is that the accompaniment is a touch too loud over your voice.
But otherwise, Bravo.
(And I understand, I'm definitely a musical theatre geek, too. Sondheim=brilliance)

ok. was prepared to type how gay is this. . . but you really did a great job on a difficult song that many people would ruin. Good voice. Great raw talent, with more training and some direction, I think your interpretation will be even better on certain parts of the song.
What a beautiful voice you have! The only thing I would recommend (as if you asked me lol) would be to watch your phrasing in the middle ("He smiles sweetly, strokes my hair...). You sing this part beat to beat (He-Smiles-Sweet-Ly-Strokes-My-Hair-Says-He-Mis-Ses-Me), where it would be better to sing longer phrases (HeSmilesSweetly, StrokesMyHair, etc.) AND, I love your clear tripthong on the word "Smiles"!! Very few articulate that correctly. Kudos.
But my friend. You have a true appreciation of this song. You also have a strong and true voice. I clicked on this with trepidation. I am glad I did. You sound lovely. :)
it is nice to 'meet' you. i am frank and actually i would love some lemonade. i went to see a concert version of ALNM in Boston with Christine Ebersole who did a sublime "Send in the Clowns."
This was really really beautiful :) such a wonderful song and you have such a warm tone to your voice, it was lovely! May i just inquire as to where you got the backing track from? My singing partner and I have been looking for quite a while, but maybe not in the right places! Brilliant job anyhow :)
Also just wnated to note: the death in the title isn't funeral-home death. The "death" is the crushing blows to the ego that arise in a relationship where one loves more than the other.
A great Sondheim song is just astonishing. When I'm doing errands and running around town, more often than not I'm humming this song or singing it in my car (for like fifteen years now).
I think this song is profound, and makes me cry. Nice Performance!
I rarely feel compelled to comment, but have to commend you on a passionate, well thought out performance! Beautifully phrased (like a monologue) and honestly sung. You have a future ahead of you if you stay true to the emotions. All the best!
I have played this a couple of times and sang the other part (Anne). Ours voices blended nicely (trust me!) Very beautiful and fun to do. Thanks for recording it and also for singing what you want to sing. Please yourself and others will be pleased!
Oh my... my day has just been brightened beyond the dimmer switch. This song made me fall in love with Sondheim, I want to kiss your feet for singing this.
Beautiful voice and beautiful song. Thank you so much for sharing. It's amazing that I could be transported with you just in your room with a strand of garland and Christmas lights. I hope you make it on Broadway!
hi there, you've probably heard it tons of time before but you are a great singer, lovely tone, great control and pitch. Bravo. I too am a Sondheim fan and so naturally looked at your vids singing his stuff. My fave is 'Sweeney' and I wait with anticipation for the movie. On that note(pun intended), I suggest you maybe do 'Johanna' next...?
i know. i was just referring to the title. for those who might not know the song or the show, or even the clever little sexual subtext, death generally equals morbid.
Yes. I just recently made the discovery that "a little death" or "la petite mort" is French for "orgasm". The music rises and falls so much and ends on a sigh.
wonderful.how do you video and record yourself? and what program do you use? can i make a request pleaseee? Angels Punks and Raging Queens From Elegies. Its a really beautiful song.. please . thank youuu
Nothing better than Sondheim, truly. You have great potential. Good musical theatre voice, but pick a song that really shows off your talent. Pick a great audition song and go find a show looking for a clear crisp voice. Sondheim is brilliant, and you are talented...go find a venue that will appreciate your talent. YouTube is fun, but talent shouldn't be wasted.
I just got 2 sondheim books-follies and a little night music-- I can't wait to get learning them.
This was great! I love how easily the melody flows, so that even though it is a duet, it can be sung by anyone in any style and it'd sound this good. :-)
Wow, you have a BEAUTIFUL voice and nature. I'm also a huge admirer of Sondheim's work (a real Sondheimite, I guess lol?!) and LOVE this song - it's one of my favourites. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up when you sang it; thanks so much for sharing...
I LOVE your little introduction because I, myself am a musical theatre nerd! :]
Sondheim is brilliant!
and I thought you sang this very well :]

did you know that "la petite mort" means "the little death" and is used as a metaphor for orgasm.
I didn't get the impression you understood that as you sang it - although you made a lovely sound.

@installedpear i did - although i didn't really think of it that way until now. i think i want to sing this over with that thought in my head!
