My father was chief of buildings and grounds at Ritchie for over 15 years. He worked at the complex shown at 4:00. He had responsibility for all housing and each building on post and at Site R.
Spend a lot of my teenage time at the O club beach in the summer swimming in the lake.
It was a real shame to see the post on the BRAC list. Beside the family connections, it is a beautiful post.
I lived there as a little kid preschool/kindergarten aged in the late 70s. Fond memories -- I remember that lake well. My dad retired as SGM there after about 30 years in the Army. Sad to see it looking like a ghost town.
there is an underground base in the mountain in the opening shot right under those large towers. Its called site R and is able to hold the entire pentagon staff in an emergency . or so they say
Omg!!! I was a kid living on this base around 91 - 94. And I see my old house at 1:43. Amazing how everything looks the same, even the chapel. I remember playing in the woods with friends n catching frogs, paddle boating on the lake, the fashion shows, playing in the rec center, etc!!! lol one of the best times of my childhood hands down.
abandoned military buildings? probably asbestos is the reason they got shut down and its going to cost the US military millions to gut and renovate, most likely the reason the buildings stand abandoned
Lived here in the early seventies and then again in the early eighties graduated from Smithburg H.S. at 1:41 used to come down this hill take a right and go to the creek when i was a little boy. at 1:59 lived in the building all the way at the end in the early seventies. at2:14 lived in this building goin round the curve on the left 79-81.go back out the front gate take a left then another left and go up to high rock and party.
Oh wow!! I played up there in a band at the NCO club a couple of times. Didn't know they closed it .. wasn't that the east coast version of Colorado Springs NORAD base??
She should have driven to the "mountain", to show the main purpose of the base. I was stationed there in '72 as a crypto technician. The facility in the mountain was designed to withstand anything but a direct hit (nuclear). My main concern at the time, was weather or not I was going to Vietnam. Fortunately I did not.
i was stationed there from 69 thru 71, sad to see it abandoned. i have good and not so good memories of this place, i also worked at the Rock. was with the 572nd MP company. we were just kids then. i'd like to go back and visit it sometime.

is it still abandoned or did fema reclaim it for a death camp like they did here in Arizona to over 15 military outpost that were abandoned and are now full staffed??? weired huh.. Google fema death camps and you'll find out....
Yes its a FEMA death camp now. All the people that live there are Govt agents. You should go around base handing out gifts to all the residents to get on their good side and hopefully they will put you in a light labor group when NWO takes over.
I lived here in the 50's. Best place to live. We were one of the first to live on post. We did two tours here. My dad work at the ROCK. No tours back then.
I was stationed there in 1993-1995. Nice to see it again, even tho its much different. It was a nice place. I was in the 572nd MP company. I lived off post in Waynesboro, PA. Thanks for posting.
I used to live on ft ritchie. i lived there in 2006, you must not of went to the part of base where there are people actually living. the base is not military anymore but the owners rent out homes, they built a community center. they are tearing down alot of old buildings and building new ones so they can open up buisnesses.
Thank You for sharing this video. I was stationed at Fort Ritchie in 1992-1995. I lived in the light green or gray colored housing. Wow, I was married at the Chapel and had a reception at the Officer's Club in 1995. I really miss this beautiful place. I wish they wouldn't of closed it down.
It was never completely abandoned. Whoever shot this video conveniently skipped the part where he drove through the part everyone lives at. I think that may be my car leaving as he enters. The remaining housing is rented out. Half of the old housing (along with everything else on that side of the base) was demolished a year or so ago. It is now managed by COPT. Pretty much run as a gated community now only with old military housing rather than new McMansions. The new community center is nice.
Many thanks for this. My dad was stationed there in 84-87 and we lived in Officer's quarters just down the hill from the Community center. This was by far my favorite military base to live growing up. I've always wanted to go back and check it out but I guess this video will have to do. thanks
Fort Ritchie isn't abandoned anymore. It is being rebuilt as a commercial, residential and retail development. You can visit their website to read about it.
I was surprised to hear this. I was in the 572 miltary police company stationed there in 1968. I saw the grate i used to work, and the place where I lived, worked the site too.Down under the mt. in penn. fiji692
Hi, my name is Joey. At least back when I lived there between the ages of 10-12 (1969-1971). I'm so thankful to see video of this before everything was torn down. If you go see now, the housing areas between video time 1:05 and 2:26 is all just grass now but the road remains. I used to live at 1:27. Most memorable moment? First girlfriend and first kiss from a cutie named Debbie. Anyone reading this and visiting in the future, can you get a drive-by tour of the place now?
People can go in and out whenever they want. Its not completely abandoned, there are still people living there and all. They're rebuilding everything now. You can drive through whenever you want.
this is just Fort Richie. Ravenrock is on rt 16 in

Thanks for posting this. I got to see my old home in this video. My 1st job ever was being a bagger at the comissary there. I remember DJing at the NCO club on Saturday nights. Man this birngs back memories.
Really, this place is pretty high class. There are some rich families who are living in the fort and there's a nice country club with a beautiful beach where people have weddings.
True, but it was a naval base before, i use to live there(navy brat), but yea they have the air force now and the army. Just earlier this year they closed the exchanges this year, due to funds and such but they still have the commissary open.

you should of smashed all the buildings and offices!! why are you just filming it why not drive through the buildings or set light to the walls and stuff
Thank you for this. It's so sad. I was stationed here in 1971 and it was so vibrant at that time. It was actually known as the 'Country club of the Army'. Wish you could have gotten a pic of the HQ building, the Castle. But you stirred a million memories just the same. Thank you
neews flash most of the bases that shut down left behind nasty stuff for the rest of you .I lived in sacramento next to a base.Come to find out they had been dumping stuff into the water since the 40s
my dad was stationed there at around that time too. my siblings and I and all of the other neighborhood kids liked to play in what we called the "Danger Woods".
My dad was stationed there late 60's early 70's when I was around 4 years old I believe. I remember living in base housing in a home that was to the Right of the T-off spot for the golf course...I believe you drove by that location. Memories, Thank You...
Very cool...only YouTube would have a video of Fort Ritchie...stationed here from 82-84...got caught in the biggest blizzard I've ever seen back in '83...I was a 71L in Support Company, loved the flag football and softball games, very weird we had an MP for just about every 2 Soldiers on post...worked in the mountain for a year, only time in my life I ever got a headache...
I was stationed here...'75 through '78.Would have stayed here for the next 20 years if they would have let me...loved the area...and the locals were great.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
omg you had a whole little town to yourself! why didnt you get some friends ands and smash the place up?? i would of if that was me. i cant understand why you didnt destroy all the houses and break everything
I live here. The housing has been rented out since it closed. 90% of the buildings in this video are now gone. It is now called Lakeside Corporate Center and is being demoloshed and rebuild, except they arent allowed to touch the stone buildings. All the old baracks and the unoccupied housing is gone now.
Так вот он какой, форт Ричи! Теперь я имею представление, где ты живёшь. Thanks. By the way, it looks like not too deserted. Our derelict units looks like more badly.
Pretty cool video. Well, someone has to mow all those lawns to keep it up like that, just like someone has to keep changing lightbulbs at Area 51 lol. Doesn't look too bad, but wonder how the public services and resources are, ease of various resource access can drive a community to thrive, lack of local resources and public support and/or disasters collapse communities with no good local businesses or jobs.
There should be Low income housing placed in the old houses, sell them to people cheap and then you can tax them and get money back into the local area
I live near the base and lots and lots of it is torn to pieces, with no evidence that some things ever existed! My son occasionally gets to play ball in the gym.
How sad to see this. I lived here when my father was stationed at Ft. Ritchie. I thought it was a beautiful place to be as a child. What wonderful memories! Thanks for the video.
My NG unit is very close to this post and would use it for Co runs. There is a lot of activity there...some private companies and seminars are held there. The housing is, in fact, being used- though not to capacity. Its pretty well maintained...better than other NG bases.
I would not reccommend taking videos of army posts, as it will cause more of a pain in the neck to you than it is worth.
This video's just fine. It's not like the videos most kids take these days of abandoned military bases inside or Area 51 dreamlandresort, lol. For example Urban Explorers Camp Hero. Nothing is undocumented anymore in today's survellience filled legally document filled world.
I was stationed there from 1973 thru 1974 and it was a beautiful post in support of Site "R", when I think of the money spent to maintain the post it is sad to see the current condition and inactivity -I plan soon to take a day trip to see the former post and bring back some happy memories - Gary Trocola
I live and also worked here and the antenna on the hill is site "C" not "R". Yes the area is called Ravenrock but the mountain is Mt. Quiruak. Site R is north of Sabillasville. It is a common misconception among people that live here that have no clue what they are talking about to believe it is site R so I dont doubt you have been told that by 'people who know' but seriously. You are wrong no matter how long you have lived there. Its site C
My Dad who was stationed here from 1982-1985, used to work IN the mountain.
On family day we went to visit the portion we could visit. Processing, cafeteria, etc. For me the big "neat-o" was the blast door which was about 5 or 6 feet thick.
When the Liason Captain met us he said
"Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to SITE R."
If you dont believe me, Wiki the site, or google it.
There is an AM radio station up there now. I used to live in the unit directly below it before they demolished that side of the base. At 1:40 when he turns past the hydrant thats my old unit dead ahead. Its all gone now.
THE future plans of this base is here : go to fort ritchie dot com for latest news

Wow!
Thanks for sharing this!
My dad was stationed there late 60's early 70's when I was around 4 years old I believe. I remember living in base housing in a home that was to the Right of the T-off spot for the golf course...I believe you drove by that location. Memories, Thank You...

what they do with it?

Very cool...only YouTube would have a video of Fort Ritchie...stationed here from 82-84...got caught in the biggest blizzard I've ever seen back in '83...I was a 71L in Support Company, loved the flag football and softball games, very weird we had an MP for just about every 2 Soldiers on post...worked in the mountain for a year, only time in my life I ever got a headache...

I was stationed here...'75 through '78.Would have stayed here for the next 20 years if they would have let me...loved the area...and the locals were great.

Wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was stationed there from '86 to '89 with ISEC-CONUS and loved every min. of it.

At 1:08, you can see my old building next to the MP building.
jnajem 4 years ago
Wow - I was stationed here in 1985. Those buildings on the left were offices, and you could literally walk inside from one end to the other.

There is no such thing as a Army base. It's a post.

omg you had a whole little town to yourself! why didnt you get some friends ands and smash the place up?? i would of if that was me. i cant understand why you didnt destroy all the houses and break everything
paranzoik 4 years ago

There should be Low income housing placed in the old houses, sell them to people cheap and then you can tax them and get money back into the local area

lol i bet chenney was hiding in one of those buildings in the begining sucking his balls and makings his troops slap his ass!
YoungTiggerBlood 4 years ago
I live near the base and lots and lots of it is torn to pieces, with no evidence that some things ever existed! My son occasionally gets to play ball in the gym.

I used to live on the base. It was the moste beautiful of any base i lived at.

How sad to see this. I lived here when my father was stationed at Ft. Ritchie. I thought it was a beautiful place to be as a child. What wonderful memories! Thanks for the video.

Sure, they could rename it Junkieville, or Fort Crackton..............
kellywmj 4 years ago
Actually, when it was around it was a very nice Army base, complete with a Golf Course, which is was why my Dad put it on his "Wish list"

I live about 15 minutes away from there (in Thurmont) and I'm always afraid that some cops are gonna run out and bomb me everytime I drive by it.

Yes, so much different from those other "fabulous" Army bases....

I was stationed there from 1973 thru 1974 and it was a beautiful post in support of Site "R", when I think of the money spent to maintain the post it is sad to see the current condition and inactivity -I plan soon to take a day trip to see the former post and bring back some happy memories - Gary Trocola

Back in it's heyday, it used to be known as the "alternate Pentagon". They had the ability to comandeer all 3 major TV networks in time of emergency.
RoadNasty 5 years ago
Incorrect. Thats Site R, which sits underneath the mountain as seen at the very beginning. See the tower on the hill? thats it.
RobotChikkin 4 years ago
No, the tower is called Site C. Site R is miles away in the opposite direction.
johnnynin 4 years ago
I'm not sure what you mean but the mountain in it entirety is called Site R, or Ravenrock.
I lived under its shadow for 4 years.
I'm not sure what this Site C, maybe its Mt. Weather, or Mt. Pony, but its not this one.
In the Opposite direction.... Soo...Camp David?
Kaiwynn 4 years ago
Incorrect. This is Ravenrock. Trust me,
I lived directly underneath it for 4 years.
Are you thinking of Camp David?
Either way this is Site R.
(sorry for double post, I didn't see my comment the first time.)
Kaiwynn 4 years ago
I live and also worked here and the antenna on the hill is site "C" not "R". Yes the area is called Ravenrock but the mountain is Mt. Quiruak. Site R is north of Sabillasville. It is a common misconception among people that live here that have no clue what they are talking about to believe it is site R so I dont doubt you have been told that by 'people who know' but seriously. You are wrong no matter how long you have lived there. Its site C
skyshark75 4 years ago
My Dad who was stationed here from 1982-1985, used to work IN the mountain.
On family day we went to visit the portion we could visit. Processing, cafeteria, etc. For me the big "neat-o" was the blast door which was about 5 or 6 feet thick.
When the Liason Captain met us he said
"Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to SITE R."
If you dont believe me, Wiki the site, or google it.
Not trying to be dick, just stating facts.
Kaiwynn 4 years ago
Not trying to be a prick either just trying to clear the common misconception that Site R is that antenna above Ritchie.
cryptome[dot]org/siter-birdseye[dot]htm
(fix the 2 [dot]'s)
shows aerial photos, maps, (apparantly declassified?) etc..
There is an AM radio station up there now. I used to live in the unit directly below it before they demolished that side of the base. At 1:40 when he turns past the hydrant thats my old unit dead ahead. Its all gone now.
skyshark75 4 years ago
This was 1982-1985 I'm talking about, With Fort Richie going away, I would imagine that would mean bad things for the Site.
But you said Site R was miles away. Even if I was referring to the tower on top, Site R would be UNDER it, correct?

This is a video footage Of Fort Ritchie,
Fort Ritchie and its personnel supported the Alternate Joint Communications center east of the fort in Pennsylvania under Raven Rock Mountain.

what a waste, they should let homeless or unfortunate families live there
