Great Song! Thank you Lisa Dalbello for the info I still close my eyes when I hear this song what a groove and feel. I knew Jeff Parcaro was the drummer but at the time they wern't even TOTO just some bad ass musicians WOW!
It is a friggin crime that Toto is NOT in the Rock & Roll Hall of fame yet! What the hell are they waiting for?!? This has got to be one of the most talented group of musicians and have been a part of so much music over the past 30+ years!
@MrShakyPants This is unfortunately the saddest part of their story man ... They are on about 90% of the music production from the 70s to the 90s (writing, production, or "simply" themselves playing for others), and US people just ignored them. This said, you should check out TotoNetwork, if I'm not wrong, they eventually did receive an official recognition for their contribution to the music industry over the last 30 years. I even wonder if it's not Hall Of Fame :-)
Great, great song, my new favorite, didn't know about it until this weekend, had it on repeat since. Boz Scaggs' version is the cover? That's pretty sick. Did I get the lyrics right? Thanks Listen to my story - It may never be the same - Young man in his glory - He may never see again If I can just remember - What she told me in her eyes - Today's the 8th of never - Here I stand and I forage the skies
I knew this existed, but I had never heard it. It's a little hard to be objective since the Boz Scaggs version has been my favorite song for years. It's not bad. I think the Boz Scaggs version is more soulful, even though the female voices are the same on both versions. Thank you for posting this.
Wow! I had no idea this existed. I've The first time I heard the Boz Scaggs version ( on 8-track damn sometimes I feel my age..lol) I was blown away. Now you flat out knocked my socks off with this one. It's simply amazing.
@rickydfcc77 Boz's was more 'finished' but iirc this was meant to be a demo. personally I prefer this one It is a bit funkier... that Moog bass is a killer . And to think this was pre -Toto
This version - in my personal opinion - is funkier than Boz'. I remember hearing this on the radio back when it was released (1978-79?) as it received quite a bit of airplay on the black R&B stations in Atlanta.
wow! just learned of this great original (after getting used to boz's great cut). toto is just damn too good. the whisperings - it's really cool. tks lisa for sharing insights. it's just wonderful to read comments from you.
Well that is a matter of view. David Paich of Toto wrote it for Scaggs' 1977 album but Scaggs didnt want to add it. In 1980 he decided to add it to a greatest hits album. Then David Paich decided he wanted Toto to record it and they did a version. So the original was made for Scaggs but it was Written by David Paich of Toto
Thank you! Two great musical talents! The song brings back memories....Do you have the song "Midnight in Paris" from Stephin Still's Album" Illegal Stills" in you'r collection?
@ariesespo I remember seeing Boz in concert way back in the day with Jeff, Mike and Steve Pocaro playing around him. It was a killer concert. All the very talented people on one stage. Boz I think screwed up the lyrics on a couple of songs but who cared...It was a rockin good time.
You are SO right! Today's "music" is atonal, dour, suicide inducing rubbish. Music from great talents like Boz and Toto simply does not exist anymore.
I am one of those who like this version better than Scaggs. Much more funkier, and I remember it receiving airplay on the R&B stations back when it was out. Boz' is a little too "pop". Toto has always been good at banging out soulful funk whenever they wanted to.
I'm a huge fan of Toto and I really like Boz Scaggs, but what's with the whiney added notes at the end of the lyrics? I don't like that at all. This is ok but it isn't Boz. I seldom ever like remakes of songs, even though I know several members of Toto were in Boz' band in the 70's.
This is an earlier version of the song "Miss Sun", recorded by Toto, but never made it into a Toto album. Instead, it was re-recorded by Boz Scaggs for the compilatory "Hits!" released late in 1980. The Toto version eventually entered in the "Toto XX" recopilatory of unreleased songs, released in 1997.
Hi Lisa, Very nice to get your input. Wasn't sure who sang the sexy female vocals, but now I know. Both versions are excellent.
Glad David and the Grant High gang put this together and you dated Jeff which led to some beautiful music. Your vocals add the finishing touch that makes this song so catchy.
Interesting to get a little scoop on Paich and Hungate playing the bass.
I dig the sythn bass+drm groove/feel , too, being a former drummer.
yes, it is me singing BG vox -- on BOTH the Toto version AND Boz's version.
The Toto version is actually a demo they recorded at Davlen Studios in the valley in L.A. in 1977 BEFORE they were even had a band name and BEFORE they'd signed with their label. I was 17.
That's Paich singing lead on the demo *AND* Paich playing that killer bass on the Moog (w/ Hungate later overdubbed some bass fills).
I personally dig the original demo's synth bass+drm groove/feel.
An aside...the above version fades out early, however on the full version of the demo's tag out, that's me whispering sweet nothings in English + broken Italian together with Jeff (my boyfriend at the time) - a total impromptu thing... if you listen carefully you can hear Jeff light a match to the cigarette he was smoking.
Does Paich's moog bass performance rock da house or what??? Together with Jeff's insane in-the-pocket groove + Paich's B3 riffs, it's so damn funky, soulful + sexy.
Being a 70's child...the sound on this song really brings me back to childhood and has a certain sentimentality that much of the modern day tunes don't. You sound much older than 17 here and I'm betting your were singing right out of the womb...LOL!!! You never cease to amaze and inspire me vocally. You are definitely someone I am influenced by in my singing. This song and Boz's were both gems for me to find. Your voice is such a gift to so many...thank you, Lisa...Take Care, Lisa ;)

Hi Lisa - Gord from S.A.C - wasn't sure if you got my message a few months ago but would love to hear from you. I still listen to Miss Sun all the time and love your vocal.
@voxpopgirl Lisa, I saw the album cover from the 70's, and you were definitely a hottie, and you rock on this track...is your solo cd have uptempo stuff like this one or ballads?
Lisa, is it really you??? Unbelievable!! "Miss Sun" is one of my absolute favorites ever, and in all of this time, I had no idea that Toto was the original artist, predating Boz by a couple of years. To top it off, your voice was on this original version too??? A teenager with a voice like that can get a guy in lots of trouble! AMAZING! I do agree with you about the bass part, but those strings in Boz's version & your solo are too great! If you ever perform in Chicago, I've got to know!
@voxpopgirl Lisa - can you tell us what the spoken words were, and with whom you were speaking? Both versions. I like Boz's better, but I also think it's mega-cool to hear the composer's vision/version of the song he created. Paich writes the most AMAZING harmonies - you interpret them beautifully. I'm a Jeff P fan all the way, by way of absolutely nothing. :)
@niamhorourke " also think it's mega-cool to hear the composer's vision/version of the song he created" If thats the case go listen to the original version of Lady by Kenny Rogers, and then the 1997 version by Lionel Richie who wrote the song for Rogers in 1982, then decided he wanted to do what he invisioned the song to be himself.
That most definitely is Lisa dal Bello on background vocals. She originally sang the song on the demo tapes that brought Toto its first record deal!
I actually think this version is a lot funkier and more soulfull than the Boz Scaggs version. Just listen to the bass and to Jeff on drums... yummie! However, the unbeatable version would be this one with Boz on lead vocals. Isn't that an interesting thought?!
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is a synth bass, possibly played by Dave (or Mike Omartian, or even Greg Mathieson, one of these excellent dudes, you know what I mean). No bass player yet in the band at this point.
"Miss Sun" never appeared on "Silk Degrees", did it? I believe it first appeared on Scaggs' 1980 compilation album "Hits!", so even before the 1998 "Toto XX" album with this original version.
Interesting. It doesn't sound like the lead vocalist is anywhere near committed to the lyrics in each verse...whereas Boz's version sounds like it's written in stone. Don't mind it, but Boz's is the gem.
Sounds like it might be Lisa singing back-ups on this one too. Lisa is one the best Canadian femalevocalists.
either did I... I like Bozzzz scaggs... I love toto... It's just, that the rhthym is a slight difference..... but thanks for this too... they're both great... these lyrics are a little darker than the Scaggs version.
Sonic6293 2 years ago
I think the lyriics are the same. But the Scaggs version does seem more up, "light and airy". so to speak. Both are pretty great though.
bookcartpeddlerny 2 years ago
The lyrics are not the same. Example:
Opening in Scaggs version: "Been thinkin bout you always, guess you got me under your spell"
Toto's opening verse: "Listen to my story cause it may never be the same"
Scaggs version: "I can still remember what you told me with your eyes"
Toto's: "If I can just remember what she told me in her eyes"
ariesespo 2 years ago
