This is flamenco alright! It is clearly Alegrías and every bit in compás. So, what is he problem! Now a days people are playing flamenco on piano, Indian sitar (look up Anoushka Shankar), bass guitar, etc. & I don't hear anyone complaining about those, but all of the sudden, a clearly accomplished player like you uses a pick, now this is not flamenco! Granted, playing picado with pick is different, or some of the rasgueados can't be done using pick (I think!), but this is excellent. Congrats!!!
Todd, Holy sh*t man...that alegrias is friggin tight!!! you rule with the plectrum man!!! i didn't know you were so bad ass with flamenco with the pick. Keep up your hybrid style it's so cool and unique to watch. I can't keep smiling haha. dude! :D- CarloJ
What a gun! I have been listening to flamenco for more than 30 years now, but never did I imagine such beautiful flamenco guitar music could be executed using a plectrum! Amazing. You are possessed of great talent and ingenuity. Well done.
As for the purists - it's their loss if they refuse to let their hearts resonate to the wonderful sounds of your Alegria! Keep up the good work.
Amazing right hand tech, the music is without a doubt flamenco, however he plays with a plectrum wich is unheard of in flamenco, he got some tallent there.
hey, man, this is awesome, really not flamenco LOL
don't know why people look at the nylon strings guitar and say it's flamenco, there are a lot of styles that are played with nylon strings, like "MPB" Música Popular Brasileira [ brazilian folk music, trranslating, i guess ]
really i saw you movie every day you really maestro and 1 day you will be legend in guitar and in flamenco good luck wish you all the best maestro @ amitiè hichem kafi
Jose Merced said once " If it sounds flamenco than it is flamenco". So i guess it does not matter as long as what you play sounds flamenco. And this really if i don't look at your hands and just listen to your playing it is Flamenco, OLE!!!!
its greath and inspiring!also here in belgium there are a lot of scared arogant spanisch purist people who think there the king and they are terrible with money i never play with them enymore, here in belgium there is nothing to do......i play them all to home.more than 15years i am playing my own flamencomusic and still nobody asks me to play because they cant
I really enjoyed that - loved the latin vibe - good technique especially using a pick and fingers rather than pure fingerstyle. That is not easy on a conventional classical fingerboard as the strings are widely spaced.

What he might mean is that all Spanish guitar music is not Flamenco and he would be right. I believe Alegrias is what you might call Spanish 'Folk' or traditional
No, let me explain a little bit hehe. Lets say flamenco is a big style. For this example compare it to the jazz.
In jazz there are fusion jazz, bebop, nu-jazz, west and east coast jazz...In flamenco, they have "types" of songs, based on harmony and rythm. Alegrias, Bulerias, Tarantas, Tangos, Soleares...but they're all part of Flamenco. And this definitely sounds very flamenco, if you don't watch you can't notice he's using a pick!
have you guys checked the overall structure of this alegrias? only somebody who knows very well the structure of the alegrias can play like this guy...
Look, Guitarwizard, I don´t know why you even bother to answer to these comments. I don´t give a damn whether you label this as flamenco or not. The fact is that your guitar sings pure Spanish flamenco. I think after a few more of these videos, we are all going to start playing our flamenco guitars with a pick here in Spain. Btw, great jazz lesson also!! If you ever get tired of living in US, you should come to Spain and teach us some flamenco... Rgds from Spain.
Guadcaza was saying that if its not flamenco why play it like it is? He also said leave the flamenco to the flamencos and the non gypsies to do there non gypsie music(Ps this means you!)
If I wasn't watching your right hand I wouldn't tell the differnce in the sound between traditional flamenco technique and what you are doing. U can't believe you even got the alzapua sound down. Great compositioin as well!
Don't be afraid to call it flamenco dude. It has all the parts necessary and now it has become bigger than the sum of all the parts;D.
I was wondering where you got that rythm section from. You seem to have a studio. Did you make it yourself or buy it from a cd. If you made it yourself, could you send it to me by email? :)
i have played with pick for 15 years nylon strings, but this is the first time i see somebody doing this hibrid.he's really good with both pick and fingers.I do it very well at any style, but you man,let me tell you, you're soo good.congrat!!!

I really like it, if musicians aren't locked to traditions etc., for example playing a flamenco guitar always with the nails. You can play a flamenco guitar with a pick and I do that too (actually a classical guitar) and I don't call my music flamenco then, but why always follow rules or traditions, that would stop the evolution and development.
nice demonstration of mixing techneaks. I wish more guitarist would realise you don't have to play things exactly like given and create there own sound.
this is a very nice play. i'm spanish (from sevilla, andalusia) and i'd say that its strongly based on alegrias but anyway i like yours more than Paco de Lucia's ones jejeje trust me this is a lovely song man thanks to upload it!!
i am back watching your stuff again and man its good stuff i play like puerto rican music alot and i can play fast picking runs and all but man your pickin is amazing with not only the runs but all the chording and and stuff so i just wanted to say really great stuff!!by the way you look only like 24 years old :-)
I meant to add, I dont really care wether what i play is considered flamenco or thrash metal. I just enjoy playing music, whatever you want to call it is up to you. Its all about having fun.
Good question!! hahaha Because i play with a pick, i have many flamenco "purists" commenting that im not playing "Real" flamenco, and that its wrong to use the pick, its not "true" flamenco. So i fixed that problem by simply saying its not flamenco in the title. As you can see, it works perfectly. I have had no purists coming here and bashing me since then.
love the flow

I meant to add, I dont really care wether what i play is considered flamenco or thrash metal. I just enjoy playing music, whatever you want to call it is up to you. Its all about having fun.

it's funny you should mention metal.
i played a bunch of the solo flamenco videos through a distortion pedal and then into the stereo and it sounds wicked.

why do you insist to say that this is not flamenco?
porduende 5 years ago
Good question!! hahaha Because i play with a pick, i have many flamenco "purists" commenting that im not playing "Real" flamenco, and that its wrong to use the pick, its not "true" flamenco. So i fixed that problem by simply saying its not flamenco in the title. As you can see, it works perfectly. I have had no purists coming here and bashing me since then.
