  • does anyone know the flautist who played the solo? it was fantastic

  • why can't i find a video where they perform it with chorus? i've got a recording with abbado and LSO, and it's just sooo great

  • Needs more Asians.

  • SO MANY ASIANS IN ONE ORCHESTRA LOVEEE IT

  • Awesome Flute Solo! I wish I could play it this well!

The funny Triangle lady at 3:56 is a nice touch, glad she enjoys her job!

  • Beautiful played flutesolo! Really taking time with the first run instead of nervously rush like many other players intend to do. However the intonation at 3:00 is not good.

  • I'm looking for another one of his masterpieces. It reminds me of this song but it has singing... but not words just melody... its hard to describe I can't find it. It doesn't sound like opera if that helps. It's amost like this song but with a chorus of some kind.... any ideas? Thanks!

  • @osmosys808 this piece actually has an optional chorus part. From wikipedia: "He extracted music from the ballet to make two orchestral suites, which can be performed with or without the chorus." So maybe you're just thinking of a version you heard that happened to include singing. And indeed, the chorus part in this piece has no words, so there ya go.....probably.

  • @bobshishkabob05 Ah I see! :) Thanks

  • The flute solo is superb...so colourfull , sensous and controlled at the same time...better than Monsieur Pahud, without exagerations and distorsion of the rhytm patterns, just memorable and inspiring!

  • Oh no! Basses at 2:45...ouch! -__-

  • @Doily131 how did you hear that?

  • @cliffworks4321 I used my ears...what kind of question is that?

  • @Doily131 just a compliment on your awareness, nothing more. average listener

    would not have noticed.

  • @Doily131 Yikes... bit quick to jump to the offensive there. :\

  • @mmoynan Uh......someone should say something. A professional group of this calibur should not have those type of problems. Get over yourself.

  • @Doily131 I didn't expect you'd take it well!

  • I love watching all these hardcore musicians do these pieces. They are so passionate and practiced. It's the reason why classical music will live on forever, while other forms of music fade away.

  • Exquisite!!

  • absolutely beautiful movement.

  • @dancerchick834

I suggest taking your score and follow it while they play to figure the measure number out.

  • I think that was meant for heather621? :) But yes, good idea

  • does anyone know what measure number the Pantomime begins at? I have the full score of this piece. I play the flute and am learning this piece. I can't find the pantomime section labeled in the score at all. It only has measure njumber markings. Any help?

  • @heather621

I suggest taking your score and follow it while they play to figure the measure number out. (Sorry dancerchick834)

  • Ravel = Genius

  • that's because you hear the emotion, you don't see it. This is an auditory performance, not a visual one; the emotion is conveyed through melody, not through facial expression. Otherwise you could watch it muted and get the same result.

  • I find the opening tempo of this too fast. Also, the oboe solo has no passion and is often too violent with a texture that should be nothing but sultry and seductive. He just beats us over the head with it. The best recording of this is the Cleveland Orchestra with George Szell conducting. He gets every last little bit of emotion from the orchestra and it is about as technically perfect as you can get.

  • I actually agree with you on the oboe bit. But the rest of it was beautiful.

  • i didn't like the agogic of the flute solo neither...but fine technique however...

  • which SWR Symphony Orchestra? there are 3!: one in Stuttgart, Freiburg/Baden-Baden and Saarbrücken! ;o) all very fine orchestras...

  • Merci, Imoimo.

  • Listen to part one of their recording...you'll see emotion.

  • ... And now Ravel is one of my favorite composer (with Debussy) !!

    I just ... LOVE this piece !

  • this piece of music is my all time favorite classical song!Love it!! Sarah Hughes 2002 olympics!!!

  • It is not classical; it is French Impressionism.

  • Ashkenazy looks a bit like Leslie Neilson in this ha ha :)

    Amazing music...

  • Drunkwuv, could you precise please which performances you meant when mentioning superior to that one ??

  • HOLY SHIT! DAPHNIS ET CHLOE IS STUNNING! What a shame that I was not introduced to the piece earlier even though I'm a Ravel freak.

  • @aldebussy . my sentiments exactly. was wrapped up in the piano works. the textural and harmonic complexity mesmerize. ravel is never ever dull, unlike the others.

  • @aldebussywell its never too late. I like this and the introduction and allegro, not to mention the string quartet...

  • The flute work is amazing!!!!, the sound of the solo flute and alto flute is beautiful.
