The only difference between then and now, was the fact that people used natural ingredients and natural colors like beet color for red and other mixes. Now, it's all artificial ingredients with corn syrups, HFCS, E #'s. If u value your health people, never eat those E#. They are artificial colors and made with very bad chemicals that our body does not know what to do with. It never encountered it in the past. Also, in 1970's Russian scientists concluded that E# did cause cancer. Google it.

There are still people out there who make them by hand, thank God, but if you want to do them yourself, learn from an expert, and don't ever scrimp on the cost of a candy thermometer, if you need quality equipment,, it becomes an investment, not just something to do on the weekends.

You can actually find flavorings in places like Ben Franklin (the craft store) You can find lots of candy making stuff there! =3 The flavorings come in so many varieties! There are things like pepermint, pomegranite, straberry, whatever! =3

O yeah! I forgot to mention, you can find corn syrup in most super market. Theyre usually sold in tubs or jars.

I found something on the internet that describes how to make corn syrup by combining an amount of sugar with an amount of water over medium heat, but that won't be as concentrated as store bought.

So, what I would need is a decent brand of corn syrup, candy thermometer, and some form of flavoring.
