I love this band so much.... They're everything I'd for in a band. Music that let's out an extremely vibrant atmosphere and just makes your eyes water because it just feels so good to have that music inside you, interesting instrumentation/experimentation, and great songwriting. I'd meet billy corgan just so he could spit in my eye and I would be satisfied. (well, I would actually feel the opposite, but it would be better then never meeting him at all, which goes along well in my repetitive life
i love this band. my life goal is to get EVERY single album the smashing pumpkins has to offer, AND go to at least ONE of their concerts. im only 12!! :D
@blackhorse099 I mean, I would personally love it if Billy had done something like Porcupine Tree's Fear of A Blank Planet album, but I still think the Pumpkins have a lot to offer as they are. I just enjoy them.
They recorded this song in Billy's apartment, I think, and at 5:24 you can hear a fire truck or ambulance go by. But the timing is so perfect they left it in.
This guitar solo blows my mind. I still don't know what he's doing exactly to get those guitar sounds. Maybe it's better that I not know that way I'm always amazed lol.
@randomdude19 I'd say that's a good guess. I have a feeling there was something else on there too...maybe a phaser/flanger or something with a whammy bar? The world may never know. I guess I should just call up billy and see lol.
@guitarguy00001 Yeah same. They're one of my favourite bands. For me, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans is a better example of their longer songs. Other favourites are Thru the Eyes of Ruby; Cherub Rock; Mayonaise; Rocket; Jellybelly; and 1979.

I just fucking love the Smashing Pumpkins. For the last few months, i've been constantly listening to them and just as soon as you think you've heard all their great songs, you hear one like this that absolutely knocks you out. Incredible band.
one of the great songs of the 90's. :D Pisces iscariot is an album I played every day on my walk to my first year of college in 1994. If this song is about a misnomer (calling someone Starla instead of Darla) why is this linked as a satanic song on thesatanicnetwork with Zach Black?
I cant believe this solo. This must be what its like to jump off a plane whilst doing a heroin speed ball. What frame of mind does one have to be in to just lift a guitar, ask your fellow band mates to just repeat the same 5 notes for 5 mins and just do that? Its beyond words.
the name came from a girl he met at a party and liked, he got her name wrong, she was called darla, he met her years later and said did u here the song I named after you? she said my name's darla, not starla :)
i named my cat "boo" after the little girl in the pixar movie "monsters inc." I don't smash pumpkins, just am smashing when i pump.age unkown, and from the planet fresh crotch.grand parents from the house of bundy.posting child birth should be time spent with your friends, family, and forever true...not a hater,congrats..but elsewhere is better spent
How many bands can release an entire album of B-sides and have it reach #4 on the charts?!?! Only one that I can recall! Smashing Pumpkins still rule in my mind!!
This song is like a metaphor for life. The guitar solo trying to stand out against the background noise, sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing and blending in, always fighting. And in the end eventually conceding and finding peace.
@GourmetPIMP Aha. Real music makes you see things like that, and think things like that. Awesome!! We need more coments like that. People share your feelings, dont hide! Music sometimes is Amazing,
My daughter was just born on April 19 and her name is Starla Belle. The Smashing Pumpkins are my husband's and my favorite band and have been since we were teenagers. We always knew that if we had a daughter her name would be Starla. I <3 the Pumpkins!
@ult1m4t *SONGS, not band, they sold millions of albums. And they ruined their music by taking way too long to record it not so long after this beautiful piece.
My favourite smashing pumpkins songs. Possibly my favourite song ever. I don't know if it'll ever happen, but I've always thought if I ever have a daugther, I want to name her Starla~
@iammeuru1 You're right about that...And also, from what I just read...Billy met a fan at a show, he thought her name was "Starla"...he admired the name, wrote this song. Come to find out, her name was Darla.
solos like this one are rare! many people say that this is only noise, but this comes from the heart, man! the problem of todays' music is that many artists don't use their heart and soul. they only care on being polemical and appearing in the first pages to, consequently, earn (more) fame and (more) money.
Used to listen to this "tape," ya tape, driving from Springfield Illinois to Erie PA. I miss my '87 Chevy express. These songs got me through several harsh storms in life's travel. jam sessions can not be beat by anyone current.
@Hoppus217 he probably wrote it after gish but didn't think it was a song that suited siamese dream so put it on a B-side, its still releasing music, the world needs more B-sides and EPs =]
I named my cat Starla because of this. When I'm older,I'll name my daughter Starla.Just because this song is so amazing and listening to it at nights is the best part of anyone's day.
this is probably the first video ive seen with no dislikes...the best part is it keeps those fags away who comment on that shit...like 10 people dont know whatever, man fuck them!
To anyone that loved SIamese Dream - this was the beta - and it's excellent.....Siamese Dream, pretty much every song is a smash to me - this album would have been what Siamese Dream is....
already a die-hard fan, at 15 when this came out this proved they were deeper in talent than an ice cream truck and sepia lens filter. this medley sampler of some of the dopest rhythms compounded by the drive of jimmy. taught me what jamming was "serve yourselves noone else can do for you like you, noone else fails like me." every note as excellent as the last. as if it grew there.
@cvframer top comment, writing you i killed my buzz and i had to smoke another bowl to hit them notes on my harmonica on the second pass. shame on you.
B-side songs that completely overshadow any modern music that's come out in the last 10-15 years. Anyone want to help me build a time machine so we can go back to the 90's?
@NoHeartAnthony Sad...sad....not over-rated but boring to those only interested in top 40 Pumpkins music. Come on man...Pumpkins did many great songs that know one will ever hear on the radio. The radio won't even play the outro to Drown...that doesn't mean it's not a great tune and one if their best. This is also one of their best - pure emotion. Love it!
@treyn1212 Are you saying I'm only interested in top 40??? Please!
I just don't like the song much. Simple as. I've never heard any Pumpkins songs on the radio here in the UK, then again I've only been listening to them since 1998.
@NoHeartAnthony 1998? You're good in my book my friend. I'm just saying the top 40 radio had ruined some great Pumpkin songs for me. Some of my good friends point out the flaws of the the Pumpkins only to what they hear on the radio. BS - listen to songs like this and then come back and talk to me. It's the songs like these that made SP. I first heard this tune when Pisces was released in '94 and was amazed. The guitar over-tracking is what got to me the most. I apologize to you friend :)
@treyn1212 Nah, don't apologise. Maybe I wasn't articulate enough. I'm not dissing the song but it's just not a personal favourite, I know how big it is to the fans though.
@NoHeartAnthony now why the hell would you not want to listen to an 'extended jam session' by the original members of the Smashing Pumpkins? you will never in your life get to listen to that beautiful sound ever again, and you're saying it's...it's...OVERRATED? ah, a stab through the heart, it feels like. i love listening to this extended jam session any time, any day. it's beautiful. don't take advantage of something like this.
Dude everytime I listen to this song in the car, when I hear the sirens, i always think an ambulance is around but then I always remember its in the song
i love how underrated this song is in comparison to the rest of their stuff, but i love it; it's so well written and so expressive, it definitely conveys a mood.
This album reminds me of 9th grade, and making out with that really hot girl, and then making out with her little sister! Yep, this song was playing for sure. Thanks to the Pumpkins for supplying my teen soundtrack. No thanks to the pumpkins for quitting though, that was NOT cool! We need more music from Billy Corgan, I mean, he couldn't write a bad song if he wanted to!!
If I'm ever to meet Billy, I'll walk up, hug him, and walk away.

I think it's a little over-rated. I love the Pumpkins, but this song is like an extended jam session to me, sorry :'(

@kelsxrunsxthis I'd rather listen to Drown's last 4 minutes of static as a jam session :) I'm sorry I stabbed you in the heart.

Dude everytime I listen to this song in the car, when I hear the sirens, i always think an ambulance is around but then I always remember its in the song

I dont think anyone realizes that this is as good as it ever gets...this is truly it.

i love how underrated this song is in comparison to the rest of their stuff, but i love it; it's so well written and so expressive, it definitely conveys a mood.
and does anyone else hear the sirens at 5:27?
i heard it was recorded in one of the members' houses. i love how organic that is
