@CastelynTV Also (sorry for the double comment) I found at the time quite entertaining the fact that a method to prevent unauthorized access and prevent key logging was, in fact, bypassable with key logging. It's all this video is about.
@CastelynTV Actually the problem is rather different, and does not include another theoretical individual who shares another theoretical similar serial. The problem was in the possibility for an automated logger to use the informations used to log in one account to cross-log into the other semi-instantly. And that was even before the method of reversing the key that's in an authenticator given 3 different logged numeric auth codes.
lol I have been hacked thousands of times!!! The first time I was like: WTF!!! FUCKING CHINESE HACKERS........Now I'm like getting used to it....: Oh lol..I'm hacked..again..:L I really need to get an authenticator key thing !
Some fucker deleted my main and stripped the other 80s down, so i did a recovery process on it, just ordered one of these today...FFS, if i find where these hackers live, i will personally do something really bad to them.
Sadly my account was hacked and banned months after I left and this has become a serious problem for a lot of people. I think Blizzard are fucking retards for having poor account security since the move to Battle.Net, now they expect you to buy the Authenticator which doesn't work anyway. I believe this is the beginning of the end for WoW.
It's not like I care, I left it because most people are either jerks, trolls or idiots which means no friends and it's all about gearscore now which is crap.
@Wiesshund I could say in all honesty that Blizz has its fair share of guilt, could have improved security right away instead of waiting for the worse, but then again, it's Activision we're talking about, so...
i tryed logging into my WoW account and saw that someone had placed an authenticator on it, now did my account get hacked or is this just a system error?
@ZammyStr dont worry that happened to me too it scared the crap all of me my guildies told a GM to ban my account cause i got hacked after me sending blizz an email they told me that the aut was removed and i logged in fast changed my pass and got an aut myself my main had all of his badges converted to honor but everything was restored :} so i hope ur good
If you find an unauthorized authenticator attatched to your account, just log into the battle.net website and try to delete it that way. Or contact blizzard but be prepared to wait on hold for an hour or more :-/ sorry!
If it just suddenly asks for a code, it means that someone has connected an authenticator to your account. If it wasn't you, then it's rather obvious who did. You should call Blizzard and explain the situation. You just need to provide proof the account is yours. You can find a phone number on the official Blizzard website.
omfg dud Panda from space i was just hacked today this morning with the authenticator its fucking the whole WoW up not helping our secruity breaking it.

@grogun0211 I think thats what happened to me. @PandaFromSpace Don't wanna be harsh, far from it, but it's not a matter of hacking, it's just a matter of scam. And you can't really blame the scammer for being scammed, in a sense. Hope you get it fixed though.
@PandaFromSpace i ignored whsps from scammers a lot, but this time, something got me bad..all my toons gear are gone..still wasn't able to contact blizz, due to massive call...they gotta fix this shit, asap...we payin to play not get hacked...more security plox...i want all my gear back, or give me 4years worth of subscription back haha..i cant log in either, with authenticator thing poppin up...sigh..fml.. /cast chaos bolt {target XhackerX}
I don't really think it's a MitM in most of the cases. They don't need to. It's a far better approach to just log the used keys, and from there reverse the ID of your security token. After all it just takes 3 valid codes of different time to retrieve the original secret code stored inside your authenticator.
@Hokibukisa As the things are standing now, the auth does work perfectly for a single account. Blizzard though in the early days made too many fault assumptions of security that breached the added layer of security the auth provided, making it useless. Well, not really useless but "destructable with a logger". If you stop like me for a second thinking that a tool born to defeat keylogging was beaten by a keylogger, it makes it that much more ironic :)
funny thing bout that is after my acct was compromised and i opened aticket... it took a few days but i got all my stuff back plus extra... i got like 60 stacks of saronite and like 40 of titanium ore... yep i got my chopper after sellig all that crap... Apparently trolls around the globe are not able to take in consideration both the fact this video was made more than 1y ago (although most of it still applies) and that it was aimed (with the paper explaining the background, not on its own) to show that the fact Blizz was saying that using one auth with multiple account was perfectly fine, it is/was not.
Comments restricted from now on, in the hope trolls will troll their way out of here.
what happens when you are logged in? lets see oh yeah ONLY 1 USER CAN BE LOGGED IN AT A TIME! WHAT HAPPENS AFTER 60 SECONDS. lets see, oh yeah the CODE expires. and guess what happens when the code expires? it be comes USELESS JUST LIKE THIS VIDEO AND YOUR SAD SAD ATTEMPT TO BE SMART. so please for gods sake do us all a favor and YOU GO PLAY IN THE HIGHWAY! better yet just log off the game called life mhkay! Dude are you serious You have 1 authenticator for 1 account and 1 authenticator for another account. Why you ask? because retard the code is valid for 60 sec. if you log in 1 account and log out and log into another account the same code will WORK! if you use 1 authenticator for 1 account and log in no one can use the code to log in since you are already LOGGED IN!
Why the hell everybody thinks they know best. Again, I'll try to explain in easy words so that you guys might understand (count that this video is more than 1y old).
First - The code IS/WAS NOT valid for 60 seconds. In this video I made it so fast for convenience, but I could use two different WoW instances with one code using it the second time after around 20 minutes later. The same thing applied to both WoW & Website. You guessed right, back to when I posted this, it WAS an issue.
So basically the same code used for logging in was still valid after around 20 minutes to log into the website. Remember how one would detach it back in the days? Yeah, no new codes needed. And the very same principle discussed in my paper was the very same principle used to hack a lot of those accounts protected with auths. And I'm talking of one auth per one account.
Also, I'm kind of fed up of people telling me that this is not the case 1y+ of when I submitted this to Blizz. So, just gtfo.
The important part was to make evident that I could perfectly log in two different accounts with a single code, without needing a second one. For obvious security reasons (mine) I blanked most of the user names and the whole password field, the rest stays mostly untouched.
lol, you're kidding me or some? The problem was (and part still is) that I AM perfectly able to log in multiple accounts with the very same authentication code, when (by design) I shouldn't be able to.
And this is also the reason why (to a different degree) accounts with binded authenticator have been hacked in the past, where it shouldn't have been possible.
More details on the links in the descriptions if you want. Keep in mind that the article is both 1y old and been posted to Blizzard.
Dude this happened to me too!!! right now i changed my password and e - mail password too just incase i have a key logger but contact billing services thats what im gonna do let me know how it works out
hey my battle net accountes keeps getting hackd for 4 th time and i kee geting it back but how would this key help my battle net accounte cuz iven if it keeps my wow safe he can log into battle ent and change email will it have the randome code to enater befor u get into battle net
Yes, it works just like a normal account, so to change e-Mail or log in the game, you need the authenticator, else you can't do any of the two. Can't change mail/pass and can't log in game.
The keylogging situation you described could be an actuality, however any practical use made of the information from that keylogger almost never is used at the time it is received. If at any case, the information received from a keylogger would be use quite a bit of time down the road, normally do to a flux of information streaming through that connection.
It was and partly still is an actuality, and I perfectly know (got hacked once) that the spoofed informations usually get into work kinda a few hours later, sometimes more sometimes less.
Still I was worried that there could be a tendency with this exploit to "change" habit. For example a logger which not only logs but also automatically logs in (after a grace period of custom minutes) to website and disable auth at once.
It was a possibility I kinda wanted (and did) point out to blizz.
I must admit I didn't try that, but I usually did it with two different WoW running, logging the two accounts and the same time, and it used to work as far as I remember, not 100% sure though, might give it a try.
Absolutely not. That's what people comes to me telling, the same people downrating this video, but I can still log in fine with the same code after 7 minutes.
Those are two different accounts sharing the same Blizzard Authenticator.
The problem depicted in the video is the (at the time) huge time-frame in which a keylogger has the ability to sniff a code and use it to log the other account.
It was not. The first try I did logging succesfully in, was about 7+ minutes. That's basically the reason I started a post in the official forums.
If it was just a temporary bug, a problem with a wrong number in the code, that I simply don't know, I just know that I checked with other people aswell, and we found out it was valid for a not better defined number of minutes, because after tries taking up to 10 minutes we thought was useless checking even more.
@CastelynTV Also (sorry for the double comment) I found at the time quite entertaining the fact that a method to prevent unauthorized access and prevent key logging was, in fact, bypassable with key logging. It's all this video is about.

That is no fault of blizzard.

then they log on with the REAL info and hack your account.

if the time window was of 30 seconds, then no, it wouldn't.
The problem though is that it doesn't take that short. Last time I checked the same code was valid after 10-15 minutes.
It's safe to say that I didn't check if recently, due to my report to them, they restricted the time window to 30 seconds.
Until I checked, there was plenty of time to work on it.

I can assure you 100%

Blizzard could fix this problem easily by disallowing the same code entered twice, even if both are within the 30 second window.
