This song seems preachy to me. Why do the Chinese spit? Is it to annoy you or for some other reason? I doubt if you've ever actually be spat upon by a Chinese! They're either doing what they've been taught to do or what they feel they need to do. I see no value in an injunctive song that neither offers alternative suggestions nor offers insight about the reasons for the behavior.

It's meant to be a humorous song showing the typical Western reaction to one of the less pleasant aspects of travelling in China. Not meant to be taken too seriously. I believe the authorities did campaign successfully to change this habit at least in Beijing for the Olympics.

I don't know the details but I'm sure they were very preachy, and possibly quite ruthless in policing anti-spitting laws - as indeed Singapore is! This kind of unhygienic habit is one of the reasons the Hong Kong Chinese tend to look down on the mainlanders.

There's also beautiful scenery, wonderful musical shows, fascinating street life. It would be nicer without the spitting, but there are are lot of very positive things about China. I don't think you can write off a quarter of the world's population just because some of them have some bad habits that most western countries have grown out of.

On a train from Guangzhou China to Hong Kong. The man in back of me was hawking loogies. The sound was gross. But not one Chinese person even noticed or was offended. I was walking in the Metro just a few hours ago. This man spit a huge gob on the floor. The Metro in Guangzhou for the most part is very clean. Signs around saying NO SPITTING. But the Chinese do not care. They smoke in lifts, Babies Pee and Shit on the streets, The pick their Nose, and they have never heard of Deodorant. Gross!

When we were travelling by bus in China, a mother lifted her little girl into position to pee in the aisle. At least the bus driver stopped her and said we'd be having a toilet break soon.

There is a massive re-education campaign going on to prepare for the Olympics so hopefully attitudes will eventually change. This sort of behaviour is not common in Hong Kong nowadays.

Partially I agree, yet my Chinese friends, tell me that spitting or jumping the queue are considered as bad manners in China. I heard however a comment that mainland China is a nation of peasants (nothing against the peasants or farmers :)) who have certain standards quite different not only from the Western standards, but also from the other neighbouring Asian nations... Now, some of those Asian nations you must admit behave often better than Westerners :)

Great song. It's true - Chinese are associated with bad manners incl. spitting. You ask anyone - either Asian or European or Australian - they all can tell you how bad Chinese behave. I suppose it's a nation with very low morals and little culture (though in existence for so many years).

As I've said earlier, this habit used to be common in the West a few generations ago. There are plenty of educated Chinese who are also disgusted by such behaviour. I don't see it much in Kong Kong, where I live and work.

Usually people who have bad manners don't know their have bad manners :) If you watch CCTV closely you will see that there is an attempt to educate Chinese people for the next year Olympics to behave better and not to do things such as: spitting, pushing, jumping the queue, talking loudly, being rude, not saying thank you and please etc. The list is long. You may also improve your English and avoid using words you don't know or don't understand because they make no sense whatsever...

Well of course people in different countries aren't going to know they have bad manners if a foreign culture's concept of 'manners / rudeness' is applied to them. Surely manners, like ethics, are based on shifting social attitudes and differ from one place to another.

What seems bad manners to one person somewhere won't necessarily be considered bad manners to someone somewhere else. The education given to Chinese people for the olympics isn't about "better" behaviour, it's behaviour according to the internationally (i.e. western) accepted standards. We should accept that different places have different standards and not just try to impose our own because we think they are "better".

Firstly, I am a white westerner and I do not personally spit. But, far from being closed-minded as you suggest, I am happy to accept that people in China currently spit everywhere (such as restaurants and offices - that is a fact, making it "normal" behaviour). You have really hit the spot on this one. I work in Shenzhen but live in Hong Kong..so much difference between mainland and HK cultures. Since SARS HK citizens have changed their habits. On a ten minute bus journey in Shenzhen the driver will spit out of the window - up to five times and rarely never.
