Allthough the match was here in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, it was a home-match for Jason Culina, as he's playing for PSV Eindhoven. What I saw from Culina is that he has a more attacking role in his National team, which I almost never see here with PSV.

Even though it was a friendly, I believe that tackle was justified with a red card. The rules of the game state that if the last remaining defender takes out the player without making even a slight contact with the ball it is an automatic red card. The ref was just following the rule book. Bend the rules now, gives anyone an excuse to bend them in a game that actually means something. Unfortunately it was a bad tackle.
i agree. it may have been harsh, but the way i see it, in the world cup in 2006, that probably would have gotten a red. the players need to prepare for that type of strict refereeing. its better that they learn from friendlies and not from qualifiers. schwarzer got 2 ridiculous yellows in qualifying, so i dont think there is much to complain about here.

Yeah, I agree red cards shouldn't be in friendlies...not unless its something serious, which wasn't the case in this match. Josh Kennedy's Australia's weapon, especially against Asian nations as their defenders are naturally shorter-than-average.

Even though it was a friendly, I believe that tackle was justified with a red card. The rules of the game state that if the last remaining defender takes out the player without making even a slight contact with the ball it is an automatic red card. The ref was just following the rule book. Bend the rules now, gives anyone an excuse to bend them in a game that actually means something. Unfortunately it was a bad tackle.

i agree. it may have been harsh, but the way i see it, in the world cup in 2006, that probably would have gotten a red. the players need to prepare for that type of strict refereeing. its better that they learn from friendlies and not from qualifiers. schwarzer got 2 ridiculous yellows in qualifying, so i dont think there is much to complain about here.

Most Dutch people who commented here don't seem to realise that it's not about winning the game, but improving your play. Heitinga made a big mistake during that match, and now I'm sure he understands what a little mistake can do. As for Australia, since you won, it shows that you're following the right track and I wish you luck in future matches.
(Keep in mind though that I'm actually younger than most people here)

Australia doesnt overrate themselves. They are well aware of their strengths and weaknesses. You dont know what you are talking about though, because the team was lacking about 4 first choice players while the Dutch fielded a very good quality team. The fact is, Australia made good opportunities, played to their strengths and held their heads at an away stadium with a very vocal crowd.
