@NathanSchramm No, I'm sure he did... Here's a quote from him:
"I do not go to church anymore... I guess you might say I've come around to secular humanism, an obligation I believe all humans have to others and the world we live in."
@Mingaggins I have no idea were you got that, but thats ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that He wrote church comics, for a church, and had a book written over him called "the gospel acording to peanuts", had a bible verse or lesson in every other peanuts he wrote.
@Blacktoe You're assuming loving Jesus means you can't love your family, whereas that only says Jesus should come first above all things, your family after but still above others. JOY is Jesus first, Others second [including your family], and Yourself last.
Why would Jesus want you to love him more than your family or yourself? That doesn't sound like a divine all powerful being. It sounds like Micheal Scott from the Office.
When God asks Abraham to slay his son, he seems to have no problem with it. Slaying your innocent child to prove loyalty?! That is fucked up.
That is not the type of person I ever wish to become.
@Blacktoe God is your creator, THE creator, he gave you and your family life and rules all things. You give respect to him first and foremost because of that, because he has given us everything. Abraham never had to slay his son, he didn't wish to but was willing to do so in service to God and showed his loyalty with which he was rewarded. Now we don't even have to make sacrifices thanks to Jesus making himself the ultimate sacrifice. But if you can only worship him when convenient..
Listen, there may very well be a creator of the universe. But I can assure you, it is not that whiny, jealous, put me first and kill your kid jackass that's written in those books. That god displays the same petty emotions and horrid morals of humans, because he was created by them.
(That's kind of insulting to humans, because I know that most of us would never consider forcing someone to murder their child to prove they love us.)
@Blacktoe You have a small way of thinking. He IS first. You call him whiney, jealous, petty, and horrid but you are only projecting your own limitations upon him because you rage against him. God is first, supreme, he gives life and it is his to take away, our existence is due to him. Your also referencing the past when sins had to be forgiven through blood, because our sins were in our blood. It became Lambs because of His love for man, and later Jesus became the sacrifice for all.
"And a little child shall lead them." There are many children who show adults what faith looks like. Here's to Linus and all the children who know what is really important at Christmas.
@yehweh... Ok for one no one is forcing you to pray to a god no one has asked you to let alone forced it apon you by law. The reality is that not only do kids not have the right to believe in a religion on school grounds but actualy get suspended for saying Christmas now forcing religion is not an issue it's forcing me to keep mine a secret that's a problem I have no plans to share it but I'd like to be able to pray before a meal without getting stares (views of a 16 year old student)
To nerdiphied and other ahteists. You have a right to your beliefs, but why are you fighting so hard against something that you say does not exist. Do you fight agianst the monster under your bed too? And one other thing If you're living like there's no God, you'd better be right! Merry Christmas.
@ccharlie123456789 Is your question genuine?. If so, I hope this explanation helps to explain it. Imagine I claim to have a monster under my bed, Now imagine I want to pass a law to force YOUR kids to pray to it. Would you do nothing cuz nothing is under my bed? DUH! We are not fighting imaginary beings. We are fighting folks who want to inject their monster into our lives and govt. We fight the ignorance in your comment. PS - YOU better be right. What if by claiming 1 god youve angered another?
People you are ridiculous. I'm a kid and I find you "bickering" not only annoying but discouraging. If fighting over this is what you do with freedom of speech (which along with freedom of religion is this country based) you have no right as an adult to form an opinion. Why look up a video this close to Christmas to bash a classic tv program on it's biblical views? No one asked you to watch and or comment this video stream is simply for enjoyment. If you put half the effort you used downgrading
Separation of church & state was enacted to keep Politics out of the church not the church out of Politics. Research your facts before making inaccurate statements. The USA & Canada's constitutions were based on Biblically sound morals by men of moral standards whether people choose to believe that is the reason why people make bonehead unfactual comments. Do some research and you'll see I am correct.
All it is is a recitation of the passage from the book of Luke, folks! It's not any "stuffing"! It was the openness and freedom that was enjoyed before every other person started squawkin' about "the government or schools stuffing things down their throat." Get over yourself!
If you're into the Christmas story, the Nativity, and the Wise Men, check out my novel: Epiphany, the untold epic journey of the Magi. It's on Amazon and iBooks, or visit epiphany-siteDOTcom. Merry Christmas all, and rock on Linus Van Pelt!!!
That's what i don't get most about humanity. If you are offended by the mention of Christ in a CHRISTMAS special. Than simply move along. Nothing to see for you here.
@Squintsism I was born into a Roman Catholic family, I began to question my faith in my early teens, and I am 16 now teetering between Agnosticism/Atheism
@KileXguy Its understandable that you find organized religion unappealing, but consider that Christianity is not, and has not, been in charge for centuries and we are in fact living in an occult cryptocracy, and they are the cause of all misery. For example, even back in 1965, Charles Schultz had to fight to get this little bit of Christ's message included in Charley Brown. For me, nothing validates my faith more that knowing a small group controls the world - for the present.
I'm 41 years old, and *I* still watch this *every* year. It just doesn't feel like Christmas, until I hear Linus tell the true story of Christmas, and I hear Vince Guaraldi play some progressive jazz. Nothing sets the stage, like this wonderful Christmas classic. Heck, "Linus and Lucy" is my Christmas ringtone!!!
God bless you, Charles Schulz, for standing up to the the network and gifting the world with a true masterpiece.
This Charlie Brown Episode will always be a great part of my childhood growing up in the 1960's. Linus telling the true meaning about Christmas is great. I am so sorry to hear of Christopher Shea's passing. The true voice that brought Linus to life.!!!
I love the Peanuts Christmas Story, I recited this same passage when I was about 10 yrs. old. However, Jesus would have been born in the spring, The Celebration of Christ's birth was moved to be observed in December to coincide with the winter solstice so that early Christians could avoid persecution.
I love the Lord with all my heart and my neighbor as myself. And my neighbors believe in something different than I do. And we love eachother. They are good neighbors as I am to them. This is a blessings. I will show them this version of the story of Christmas!
My favorite Characters of Peanuts cartoons was always Charlie Brown and Linus. Snoopy was cute and funny, but he could be mean sometimes. The others could be mean also. Yes, I'm SO glad Schultz was able to keep the true meaning of Christmas in and done very well by Linus. Made an impact on me as a child. Still does. That's what it's all about (and still is supposed to be all about) Charlie Brown and everyone else.
For me Christmas has never felt complete without hearing Linus explain the Christmas Story from Luke.
Its the one really touching scene in a story that is both funny and all too true about the way Christmas is commercialized these days and how many of us tend to forget why we celebrate the holiday.
Give me a break. I'm Jewish. I'm a New York liberal. I don't want religion stuffed down my throat by government or schools.
BUT...I love A Charlie Brown Christmas, especially for Linus's reading from Luke. How could Linus do anything that wasn't sincere. And that means making Christmas about Christ.
Anything else would be hypocritical, and Charles Schulz wouldn't have stood for it.
Merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate it.
And stop worrying that anyone's coming to steal your joy..
@CKDHaven I am a Christian and I agree with everything you said :) I am sick and tired of so-called Christians freaking out about religion becoming taboo in regards to Christianity. There are more than just Christians in the world. Keep it out of schools and governments, it is a personal matter. No one owns the right to God, Christians did not invent God. Peace on earth and goodwill toward ALL men :)
I also love Charlie Brown's Christmas, good stuff.
@SMessinger74 No, I would have said keep that and I did not say that. I am saying that it is personal. I grew up in a COGIC Pentecostal church, the granddaughter of a very smart and wise Reverend. I went to church on Wednesdays and Sundays for decades. I was taught to love God but also understand other people worship differently or may not worship at all. It is personal choice on how we choose to worship or not worship. If you believe in God nothing can keep you from it.
@SMessinger74 I also think it would be wrong to have Allah or Buddha forced on people. It would make Christians feel uncomfortable. So I say peace to all men and goodwill on earth for all people, not just the ones that think and believe the way I do.
@kimrabb Telling the story of Christmas does not constitute forcing anything on anybody. It's simply telling the story. If someone told me the story of their faith, I would not feel "forced," I would be fascinated and interested.
This year I tried to find JUST ONE pack of Christmas cards in the store that told the story of Christmas in some way. There were none. Those who hate Christianity have forced THEIR way of thinking on us all by claiming that telling the story is impolite. What rubbish!
@philWynk That's crazy! I am not a christian, but I think that if somebody is going to celebrate Christmas, they shouldn't object to telling the story of why it's important. And it has nothing to do with Santa Claus, drunk reindeer, singing snowmen, Bing Crosby, or having a profitable Q1.
If they don't like the story, they should forget about the holiday and get their asses back to work.
@philWynk Make your own cards this year. That's a better gift from the heart anyways. Tell the good news in your own way. Don't count on corporations to spread the truth for you. Nobody is forcing you to buy crappy Christmas cards. Create your own.
@CKDHaven Exaaaaactly! I am a happy atheist, but I have no problem saying "Merry Christmas" to my Christian friends, or "Happy Hanukkah" to my Jewish friends, or "Happy Festivus" to my fellow Seinfeld fans. Can't we all just get along and leave people alone? If it's not physically harming anyone (like flying planes into a building) then I don't care if someone wants to believe in Flying Spaghetti Monsters. RAmen! :)
@CKDHaven Since you don't want the government to recognize religion to insure the separation of church and state I'm sure that your synagogue won't mind paying taxes from now on.
@Setinkhan61850 You missed the point. All I said was to apply reason in balancing our individual rights. There is a time and place for everything. Feel free to keep Christ in your Christmas. Or not.
Feel free to wish me a Merry Christmas (though I'll probably do a movie and Chinese food). But if you're offended by something as innocuous as "Happy Holidays", see your doctor.
This nation draws strength from diversity. Uniformity is for Smurfs (with apologies to any free-thinking Smurfs.)
@BlueMaxx86 It's only those people and Hitler whom I can't get over yet...I have been saved three years, as soon as I can truly love the Westboro Baptist Church and Hitler, I will say the Lord has completed a perfect work in me. I think Hitler will come first, haha
@binstence Well, good heavens, you certainly seem interested in burying a conversation through use of the thesaurus, don't you? I most certainly never in any shape or form acted or spoke sanctimoniously.
"sanc·ti·mo·ni·ous/ˌsaNG(k)təˈmōnēəs/
Adjective: Making a show of being morally superior to other people."
Nope...didn't do that. Instead, perhaps you should have used the story of HOW that message stayed in the show to make your point.
The fact that Charles Schultz stuck to his morals to keep it in when the network wasn't comfortable with it illustrates your point much better, and without the vitriol. I personally believe that if we start with a shaking fist, those who disagree with us will conclude that we are unable to be listened to. It's the old 'more flies with honey than vinegar' idea, and I think we might see more get done if we started from a belief that we've more in common than many will admit.
This house goes completly quiet when Linus says his "piece".
Credit Charles Schulz for demanding this be kept in. "If we don't tell the true meaning of Christmas, who will?" he said at the time. Fourty-five years later, it's the lone telling of the reason for the season on TV. Thanks Mr. Schulz.
"Everyone does naughty things once in a while but that's different from being a naughty person... you see santa's very forgiving."
ok, first of all, Jesus knows everything, and, in His Will, He can plan everything out so everyone could have a good Christmas; and, HE's the one that's very forgiving.
"oh no, christmas is ruined! Santa isn't coming!"
second of all, don't waste your time on someone that isn't coming.
Notice how Linus drops his Security blanket when he says, "Fear not" but also notice at 0.44 when he raises his hands and says "Savior" see the palms of his hands there and only there. Merry CHRISTmas! THAT IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT.
@terryfenwick Wow, thanks for pointing that out!!! You are very perceptive! I have watched this special nearly every year since I was a little girl and never realized that. This means even more to me now, even if it is from a cartoon. Thanks!!! Have a very Merry CHRISTmas. God bless you. :)
At 50 years old I never remember a Christmas without Charlie Brown and this message from Linus. And I'm thankful that I never will, this cartoon and messeage are timeless and will out live me.
Uh-oh! Linus was being Christian in public! Burn him at the stake in the name of tolerance! Equality for everyone as long as you aren't Christian, white, hard-working, patriotic, pro-life, pro-natural family, moral, wealthy, etc etc etc
This is the only mainstream Christmas special that actually quotes the Bible...it's AMAZING and all those who get offended by this, don't watch it. What a wonderful message. I'm glad Charles Schultz had the jingle bells to write it.
This moment is probably the pinnacle of the genius of Charles Schultz. The Bible version is a bit obscure. I don't think it is from the King James. I looked it up once. It is perfect for this scene. I also remember being in Catholic school when it first came out, and our nun teacher saying she liked this part of the show most of all.
I think I just noticed a little symbolism I've never noticed before. I'll have to go home and watch the whole thing; but I believe the ONLY time Linus ever lets go of his security blanket is this scene (well, and when he wraps it around the tree at the end; some good symbolism there, as well). I'm sure that's no accident; we must turn loose of our earthly attempts to secure ourselves to have faith in Christ.
40 + years later, Charlie Brown Christmas still gets better every time I see it.
Exactly! What many people don't realize is that by trying to silence Christians in the name of political correctness, they are being politically incorrect and unfair to a certain people group. The next time someone gets mad at you and says "what makes you think you can tell other people their beliefs are wrong?!" ask them "aren't you telling me my beliefs are wrong?"
Really? It's true that the winter solstice is celebrated in the same season...but you do realize nothing in the bible states dec 25, 0000 as being the actual date of Christ's birth. In fact, much about our calendar year here in modern day America is extremely different compared to what it would have been in Jesus' day.
But I get it, you wanted to ruffle some feathers. Did it feel good?
You know what's funny? There are over 700 "Likes" of this video at present and less than 20 "Dislikes"...and yet, banks and schools have to take down mangers and celebrate the "Holiday" season.
anyone else see the snl tv funhouse skit where jesus is walking around on christmas?? he's shocked by all the televangelists and sitcom christmas specials.. and then he watches linus' monologue and starts doing the peanuts dance. it's great:)

I am not worthy of the J-man. But that's OK, because I love my family and will spend Christmas sharing that love.
The love of Jesus has quite a hefty price. Something no person should be willing to pay.

Yes, I'm SO glad Schultz was able to keep the true meaning of Christmas in and done very well by Linus. Made an impact on me as a child. Still does. That's what it's all about (and still is supposed to be all about) Charlie Brown and everyone else.

This Christmas story is a total classic.
For me Christmas has never felt complete without hearing Linus explain the Christmas Story from Luke.
Its the one really touching scene in a story that is both funny and all too true about the way Christmas is commercialized these days and how many of us tend to forget why we celebrate the holiday.

Luke 2:8-14 King James Version (cont’d)
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Luke 2:8-14 King James Version
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

CKDHaven 1 year ago 15
@CKDHaven I am a Christian and I agree with everything you said :) I am sick and tired of so-called Christians freaking out about religion becoming taboo in regards to Christianity. There are more than just Christians in the world. Keep it out of schools and governments, it is a personal matter. No one owns the right to God, Christians did not invent God. Peace on earth and goodwill toward ALL men :)
I also love Charlie Brown's Christmas, good stuff.
kimrabb 1 year ago
@kimrabb so you are saying its ok to take God out of everything????
SMessinger74 1 year ago
@SMessinger74 No, I would have said keep that and I did not say that. I am saying that it is personal. I grew up in a COGIC Pentecostal church, the granddaughter of a very smart and wise Reverend. I went to church on Wednesdays and Sundays for decades. I was taught to love God but also understand other people worship differently or may not worship at all. It is personal choice on how we choose to worship or not worship. If you believe in God nothing can keep you from it.
kimrabb 1 year ago
@SMessinger74 I also think it would be wrong to have Allah or Buddha forced on people. It would make Christians feel uncomfortable. So I say peace to all men and goodwill on earth for all people, not just the ones that think and believe the way I do.
kimrabb 1 year ago
@kimrabb Telling the story of Christmas does not constitute forcing anything on anybody. It's simply telling the story. If someone told me the story of their faith, I would not feel "forced," I would be fascinated and interested.
This year I tried to find JUST ONE pack of Christmas cards in the store that told the story of Christmas in some way. There were none. Those who hate Christianity have forced THEIR way of thinking on us all by claiming that telling the story is impolite. What rubbish!
philWynk 1 year ago 46
@philWynk That's crazy! I am not a christian, but I think that if somebody is going to celebrate Christmas, they shouldn't object to telling the story of why it's important. And it has nothing to do with Santa Claus, drunk reindeer, singing snowmen, Bing Crosby, or having a profitable Q1.
If they don't like the story, they should forget about the holiday and get their asses back to work.
Gumboz1953 11 months ago
@philWynk Make your own cards this year. That's a better gift from the heart anyways. Tell the good news in your own way. Don't count on corporations to spread the truth for you. Nobody is forcing you to buy crappy Christmas cards. Create your own.
Jahme88 4 months ago
@Jahme88 Wow. Did you ever miss the point.
philWynk 4 months ago
@philWynk The point is, you cannot expect corporations to spread your faith for you. Think on it.
Jahme88 3 months ago
@Jahme88 Wow. The stupidity of that comment is, amazingly, exceeded by the sheer arrogance of it.
(A) No part of me EXPECTS anybody to spread my faith for me.
(B) Why shouldn't a corporation reflect the faith, if its owners OR ITS CUSTOMERS are in the faith?
(C) They actually did, before uneducated zeros like you flooded the market with vicious ignorance.
(D) What gives you the idea that you can give me anything that I haven't already thought of?
Don't ever bother me again, zero.

RAmen! :)
LorenScott69 2 months ago
@CKDHaven Since you don't want the government to recognize religion to insure the separation of church and state I'm sure that your synagogue won't mind paying taxes from now on.
Setinkhan61850 2 months ago in playlist Favorite videos
@Setinkhan61850 You missed the point. All I said was to apply reason in balancing our individual rights. There is a time and place for everything. Feel free to keep Christ in your Christmas. Or not.
Feel free to wish me a Merry Christmas (though I'll probably do a movie and Chinese food). But if you're offended by something as innocuous as "Happy Holidays", see your doctor.

Instead, perhaps you should have used the story of HOW that message stayed in the show to make your point.
fotobass 1 year ago
The fact that Charles Schultz stuck to his morals to keep it in when the network wasn't comfortable with it illustrates your point much better, and without the vitriol. I personally believe that if we start with a shaking fist, those who disagree with us will conclude that we are unable to be listened to. It's the old 'more flies with honey than vinegar' idea, and I think we might see more get done if we started from a belief that we've more in common than many will admit.
fotobass 1 year ago 2
This house goes completly quiet when Linus says his "piece".
Credit Charles Schulz for demanding this be kept in. "If we don't tell the true meaning of Christmas, who will?" he said at the time. Fourty-five years later, it's the lone telling of the reason for the season on TV. Thanks Mr. Schulz.

"Santa knows everything!"

Philly1330 1 year ago
This is the only mainstream Christmas special that actually quotes the Bible...it's AMAZING and all those who get offended by this, don't watch it. What a wonderful message. I'm glad Charles Schultz had the jingle bells to write it.
ReaiahEarvin 1 year ago
This moment is probably the pinnacle of the genius of Charles Schultz. The Bible version is a bit obscure. I don't think it is from the King James. I looked it up once. It is perfect for this scene. I also remember being in Catholic school when it first came out, and our nun teacher saying she liked this part of the show most of all.
BHallBrowser 1 year ago 5
I think I just noticed a little symbolism I've never noticed before. I'll have to go home and watch the whole thing; but I believe the ONLY time Linus ever lets go of his security blanket is this scene (well, and when he wraps it around the tree at the end; some good symbolism there, as well). I'm sure that's no accident; we must turn loose of our earthly attempts to secure ourselves to have faith in Christ.
40 + years later, Charlie Brown Christmas still gets better every time I see it.

@SatineFallenHellsing
Exactly! What many people don't realize is that by trying to silence Christians in the name of political correctness, they are being politically incorrect and unfair to a certain people group. The next time someone gets mad at you and says "what makes you think you can tell other people their beliefs are wrong?!" ask them "aren't you telling me my beliefs are wrong?"
and see what happens:)
