Haha, this thing sucked, I went up against it in 2008 in Balboa Park in San Diego, and I kicked that thing's ass (if it had one, but anyways.) I took my thumb and slightly blurred the lense, without the engineer's knowledge, and just to be fair, I played the majority of the same song with my back turned to the screen, and I won. The engineers were flabbergasted, and later took the stand down afterwords, hahaha. I don't believe in no-win scenarios

Ive totally changed the circuit design of my robot, when done it should work as good as yours, may take a while, dont have much money. But soon as its done and working it'll be on youtube straight away
how much did it cost you for the 8-core thing chip, im programming chips with basic, the chips are so thick, one cost me £5 i programmed it to play chords too, still cant do it, plus the cheaper £1.50 chips destroy theirselves for no reason, 5 have been killed, if i ever finish it and get it to play ttfaf it'll probably blow up
For all you whiny bitches asking why and what for etc, etc. If I know guys like this, they're doing it because it's fun, but also because it helps them teach themselves how to program software and hardware and design circuits, and that's something that they can use in their careers to make more money a year than you whiny bitches pay in taxes.
Lol, I sure hope they'll make more money in a year then I pay in taxes.
You know it'd be even better if they paid more money in taxes then I made in a year. Man, they'd be huge then. =)
But, yea I agree... it's fun to make a recognizable project that people can identify with, and there are major rewards to doing something and learning from it. I wish I knew way more about hardware/circuitry. Alas, I'm a simple software programmer.
Why not? The first computers were built by people tinkering too... who knows.. maybe this could develop into a completely robotic rockband. Absolutely pointless, but still an achievement
I agree that the fun of GH is playing the song yourself, but for people who like electronics the fun is bulding something that only a few people have done and seeing something that you spent your money and time on work
Exactly. We still enjoy playing the game manually, but the satisfaction you get from building an "intelligent" bot is also very fulfilling for geeks like us.
Some people just want to be amazed. What if I only play on level Hard and I want to see an impossible custom song beaten on Expert? Call a friend? Didn't think so either.
hmmmmmmm isnt it possible to make a smaller less complicated bot for i dont know...45$-50$? tops like something that you plug into the 360 guitar controller and it automaticly detect te notes and stuff?
That's absolutely awesome. I wish I knew more nerds like myself so we could actually do things like this. Nobody i know could really be bothered to do anything like this, or that mineral oil PC thing.
We have noticed the same thing. The only problem with moving them farther up is that they then have trouble differentiating between very close notes... As for the lightning, I think we can fix that with some software filtering.
really nice job. It was amazing on the solos and ranked up all the points there. It randomly started strumming in the begining and end. Then again it is just the first prototype. Overall the bot missed 2 notes. The score could be higher though. Make a bunch of tweeks to the robot and your all set with breaking records. haha
Just an update, I tweaked some of the code for faster response times and the bot got 710k 98% on though the fire and flames. Originally it was getting 560k.
Three things left: Show this to Engadget. Create a DDR Bot, and play people around the world online and rule the world!!!!!!1!!1!!111!!!!!!!! Ok, maybe not that last one...
haha yeah. I'd like to submit this to engadget once we get it totally completed. The final version will be housed in the guitar, and a single cable will tether the guitar to the sensor bar (where the sensors will be placed eventually). Not to mention that I'll make a really nice video of the bot and process of building it.
Yes, there are resistors there (100K if I remember)...we don't want them sucking up all the current :). They are hard to see because they are hidden under the LED's. When this is finalized we'll put the circuit diagrams and programs all online for others to follow if they wish.
Nope, basic/the basic stamp is way to slow for this. We currently have it programmed in an interpreted language called "spin" on the parallax propeller chip. The propeller chip has 8 cores allowing us to perform note calculations simultaneously. We may rewrite some code in assembly code to speed up the processing even more.
why dont you build a mkcf bot to play

That's not very nice... but ours doesn't use a lense - photodiodes would not be affected by that trick.

Yes, it certainly wasn't a short project. The end result was well worth it, however.

sell me one so i have a decent partner for rockband :-P

Haha, hopefully once we are one completely, I'll post a how-to so you can build one of your own. We might also try a complete rockband bot...
sciguy14 3 years ago
Im building a robot like this, ther are only yours and one other that work in this way.
JoePage2008 3 years ago
what is the other one that uses light sensors?
sciguy14 3 years ago
i got it wrong, turns out its your site
mine works off of infra-red phototransistors
Also my guitar hero robot is almost complete all i now have to do is get some relays and program all of my micrchips
I also found out that its easier to hack an Xbox or guitar hero controller instead of using solenoids to press the buttons, well homemade solenoids.
My video will soon be on Youtube

Also, it appears the optical sensors get tweaked by the lightning from the start power, especially during a barrage of notes.
Perhaps moving the sensors farther up the fret bar and increasing the delay would work around that.
binaryspiral 3 years ago
We have noticed the same thing. The only problem with moving them farther up is that they then have trouble differentiating between very close notes... As for the lightning, I think we can fix that with some software filtering.
sciguy14 3 years ago
interesting idea, using optic sensors to pick up the notes on the screen.
The preprogramed bot I've seen elsewhere seems more polished, but much less geeky. Great job.

tell video info so caculate when to hit key

well you will need to use some relays hooked up to the connections in the guitar.
