@JBOPatrick Agreed! I REALLY hope Nickelodeon's up n coming TMNT show ends up like the one Warner Bros was gonna do! (try googling TMNT cartoon that never was to see what I mean)
Let's face it, back then CGI tech wasn't really good for TV due to a limited budget. Nowadays it's still not up to theatrical standards, but the technology has progressed enough that you get better images for a TV budget. I mean, just look at the preview for the upcoming Nickelodeon TMNT show and compare it to this. Technology sure has changed in only 10 years...
I love everything TMNT, but after seeing this this is the only thing TMNT that I would't watch! AND THAT IS SURPRISING COMING FROM ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This actually looked cute. April actually looked badass, but to real. And Caseys hair is to short for me. Also anyone getting a major 1987 meets Mirage vide from this.
Action and design mostly Mirage, but voice wise sound like 1987. Well Raph's sounds more like the live action tv series voice. Other then that it looks cute.
But boy am I happy it wasn't made. Thank god for 2003.
It's almost surreal that this was good for TV in 2001. Now they are making a CGI Ninja Turtles show, and they have the tech to do it right this time. My guess is it will be kind of like the TMNT movie, just on a lesser scale.
@CaptainAshSpearow nah, it would have been nowhere near good in 2k1 either- now, I'm pretty sure this doesn't reflect what the finished product would have looked like, but look at the animation we had in 2k1 by comparison- Shrek, Jurassic Park 3, Lord of the Rings (Gollum), etc- granted, those are movies, but yeah, there's no excuse for a final product looking like that, were it the final product! I'm glad they decided to go the animated route- it just lends its self much more to TMNT.
@KizulEmeraldfire : Yes, but that "Cowabunga" word was, is, and will associated with Michelangelo forever. The 2003 series made a lot of references to the original series and other movies and series as well.
People talking about how the visuals looked poor don't seem to realize that you DON'T put a lot of effort into a proposed pilot, otherwise you end up burning off money you don't have for something that might not even be greenlit.
The whole point is to propose a basic idea. It was to be a new TMNT in CG. That's all that's needed to get the point across.
I didn't realize cgi was so bad in 2001. Then again, this probably wasn't a finished product. Like it says in the description, it was for a proposed show, so they wouldn't have bothered to do it 100%. It must have been produced in the first half of 2001. Pause at 4:52 and you'll see they had the WTC towers as part of the city.
CGI Turtles could be good, but it would have to better than this crap. If it isn't, it could easily be 15 - 20 years before anyone tries to make another show or movie again.
@OSrubiks i herd they were going to do it like they did it i think it was in 93 94 where people dressed up like the ninja turtles expect there not going to have the different colors there all going to be in red before they had the colors to identify them.
@OSrubiks no it was in 2009 i think they came out witrh tmnt cgi i think they said in 2012 they would come out with one that was like first ones where people got in cotumes but it will be when they didnt have the different colors bands on them.
I like the way the Shredder looks in this, but it would've been better if his helmet was like a black or dark gray color and the metal mask (if that's what it is like in every other incarnation I know) was light gray.
That's just my opinion.
The way the CGI looks in this, it kind of reminds me of some old Playstation 1 games. If I recall, there were a couple Playstation 1 games with CGI looking similar to this. I think 1 was Tony Hawk 3 which looks better on Playstation 2.
hmmmm...well, the animation is definately lacking...I think it would just be better to stick to cartooning for the ninja turtles in television.
You can accomplish more action and facial expressions that way, without them looking so bulky...I know the cgi idea was successfull during the movie but it seems so uncessessary for a kids tv show.
I think a lot of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans would love to watch a new live action movie.
I hate all of this alien stuff.. It's so lame how they try to make it so swords and a staff can take on alien technology.. Return to the roots of the Foot Clan and the Karate styles.
Hmm the lower budget cgi stuff still has that sort of slow inorganic look to it, as well as there often being much less 'stuff' in scenes. I think cartoon style animation is still better till that's overcome anyway.
jesus that hideous... i sure hope this is fake... if not... that means someone from a LEGIT STUDIO (you know, one with MONEY) actually TRIED and THIS wass the result... let me reiterate... this was them... TRYING....
In my opinion, CGI VS. Live Action.. which one is better? Ok, you have a plastic toy coke can, or you have a real fuckin coke. Nuff said. On another note, where's the Heart in this new tmnt movie? It has no depth, and its funny looking. If you agree, cool, if you dont and you hate me now look at the first 3 words in my comment
No hatred mate. But you're being a bit short sighted. This is a pilot, a mockup before they render and pretty it up, its a could be rather than a final result.
They obviously chose the 2003 animation instead, so this was never more than a 3-D version of a rough sketch.
I love the live action movies, but the live action telly shows were rubbish.
I like the 2007 movie, I think it sits more with the comics than the 80s cartoon. I love that.
More Raphael the way he was meant to be. Angry and a loner.
I think there's plenty of love in the 2007 movie, they even got Mr Miyage(Karate Kid) to voice Splinter, if I had one complaint about the movie it would be the rubbish game that came with it.
Watch the dvd with commentary, I think their firts choice was Pat, and he actually sung the lullaby as the turtles are eating breakfast. I haven't seen it in a while, but I was sure that's what they said.
@psychedashell : In 2007 TMNT movie Master Splinter was not voiced by Noriyuki "Pat" Morita (Mr. Miyagi in Karate Kid) he was voiced by a Japanese actor named Mako.
@Margui622 Watch the commentary. For the most part you're right, but they did get Morita, the lullaby that Splinter is singing the morning after the turtle's reunion was a recording made just before his death.
I dont see how this can be real, the animation is way worse than it should be for 2001. Everyone is mentioning Beast Wars, and I used to watch that back in 1999 and the animation was 10X better than this. Even Beast Machines was over by 2001, I think. This looks fanmade, and the only reason I believe it is due to the voice over. Like seriously, Spider-Man the movie came out the following year. How is this animation possible for 2001?
TMNT got the beast wars treatment, but with one problem, beast wars looked like u could reach out and touch it and this looks like a opening for an early ps2 game
On Twitter, Mirage Studios posted a tweet linking to breaking news which indicated Nickelodeon acquired the rights to TMNT and they will be making a new CGI show.

@batmanownsyourass it isnt that bad, the animation good, it only lacks detail and some revamping, it looks shitty cuz its a pilot, they probly wouldve done alot better if the show got picked up
This looks funny n good but i like the version we have now!! much better n much more serious than this. plus shredder looks sooo stupid in this version!!
while i agree this is very beast wars esqe this was merely the pilot im sure it would of had alot of polish on the animation. and personaly i think that it would of been worth watching
I welcome the idea of a TMNT cartoon aimed at adult audiences.
It should either be regularly animated or CGI.
I think that Shredder should have a costume similar to the one in this and the Foot Ninjas should have costumes similar [but not 100% precise] costumes to the ones from the 1st and 2nd live action TMNT movies.
To be honest, I think the turtles look better with their pupils showing when they have their masks on.
Far better character designs than the show we *did* eventually get... The TMNT's look far more muscular, Casey and April look *human*, not like beanpoles, and Splinter doesn't look freakish... All the martial arts look actually *realistic*, and overall the character designs look like you could really *see* them, rather than cartoons, like the show we did eventually get...
I have to say, I like Caseys design. It was one of the things I didn't like about the new turtles. He was too skinny. He should have been built. Casey without muscles is like Raph without a shell.
The animation and designs may not be perfect but people seem to be overlooking the key word "PILOT" here.. Pilots are rarely as polished as the final product. To me the human characters in the recent movie suck ass and are far too reminiscent of rubber looking characters like the Incredibles.. I like the more realistic style chosen here. The weakest elements here were the non mo-capped animations, and the shader could have used a bit of tweaking probably as well as the expressions/faces.
Looks better than Nickelodeon's crap.

april o'neil looks frie ky in this one and at 2:49 that look's just the same like a level in the 2003 video game thet I have.
thewhochilipeppersU2 2 years ago
it does look fan made but to be fair, it IS a pilot (aka rough draft). I'm happy to see that we got the 2003 cartoon as a result of this.

I'm actually glad this didn't get made - it looks so self-indulgent.
Still, at least the Turtles look likable in this video as opposed to the hideous ones in the current cartoon.

Glad it didn't go 3d. Used to spend Saturday mornings at work watching the current series. Good times.

so what happened to this, IceDemonz?
they decided to change it into the TMNT show that's owned by 4Kids?
wolfguy23 2 years ago
Far better character designs than the show we *did* eventually get... The TMNT's look far more muscular, Casey and April look *human*, not like beanpoles, and Splinter doesn't look freakish... All the martial arts look actually *realistic*, and overall the character designs look like you could really *see* them, rather than cartoons, like the show we did eventually get...

Does she say the F word @ 2:38?!

I have to say, I like Caseys design. It was one of the things I didn't like about the new turtles. He was too skinny. He should have been built. Casey without muscles is like Raph without a shell.

like 70% of this show was made into a cartoon show back when i was a kid

This show had so much potential, but I think they reused some ideas for the 2003 series

I should add that the out of sync audio track doesn't help anything either.

That can't be 2001 it's so low quality rendering
