Reading the book currently and I have to say this is too fast-paced for it. Fanny seems a bit too well-fed. She looks too awkward, though she is to look out of place, it still just doesn't match up to one's expectations. 8-[
Compared to the absolute riveting pace of the novel that astounds its reader with revelation only at the end, I found the spoiler at 2:57 to be greatly disappointing. Although, Maria and Henry do a good job of sharing smoldering, inappropriate looks in this clip!
I wacthed Emma(2009) just before i watched this.. I couldn't keep a straight face when i saw that the person that plays mr. Eton also plays Edmund.. dear lord.

The clothing in these new adaptations are disgustingly ugly and inaccurate! It's as if they took no time whatsoever to make the costumes decently. I miss the real period dramas made in the 90's with accurate costumes. Like Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Pride and Prejudice 1995. The only new period dramas with accurate costumes are Pride and Prejudice 2005 and Northanger Abbey 2007.
@princessivoryrose Actually the costumes in the PP from 2005 are not very accurate, they are cut way to low to be proper regency and not full enough to be the so called round gowns of the late 1790's. And the hair of the Bennet girls, especially Lizzy and the two younger ones are very unaccurate. I do have to agree with you on the NA from 2007. The costumes were very nicely done and also told alot about the characters wearing them.
You're right about Pride and Prejudice 2005, I discussed this with some of my friends who adore Jane Austen adaptations like I do. There were many crimes against cannon in that movie. What I loved about it was the scenery and the landscapes as well as the soundtrack.
I deffinately like the 1999 version way better as a movie...but i have to say that neither versions truly captures Fanny Price as a character, and this version i think is a little closer to her personality in a way....also as much as I love the 1999 version im kinda dissapointed that there is no William cuz thats such an important relationship to fanny and reveals a lot about her character
the 1999 version is the best if u are looking for something closer to the book... both versions offer something different... I like the 1999 fanny better i must say
the only (and I truly mean ONLY) thing that saves this from being a disgusting catastrophe is the Edmund, he's right on what one could imagine him to be in the book... I could not even finish watching my first time around and I must say the second time is no better... fanny is just too dreadfully miscast
@laurenlvsbones You know, as much as i admit this version is much more true to the text... I abosolutly ADORE everything the 1998 version did with Fanny's character. And i dislike how this version ignores the slavery aspect, which, tho exaggerated in Frances O Conner's version, WAS an important point in the book.
showing her well turned ankle of course! In those days men got to see such a big piece of leg only if they were lucky when lady was clumsy to get into carriage or when a female was fast (a flirt if you like)
@ChekhovBla Oh, ha ha! That makes sense :p I must say, this version likens Mary Crawford to a flirty high school cheerleader! Makes this version all the better, in my opinion :D I've never liked her
I really like this version. I think they still managed to capture Fanny's inner strength and her "spirit" as some other commenters stated. They also had the correct clothes for the period, something that annoyed me to no end with the 83 version, never bothered with the '99 version, seemed like it'd be a bit like the 2005 Pride and Prejudice aka overly american. I could be wrong though.
@Kajujuu The 1999 focused too much on the slave trade for me and made Mr. Crawford seem likable, which after reading the books I was not at all prepared to do and very much resented in the movie.
This one here exactly catches the tone and the atmosphere of the novel. Done by the BBC, much better than this popularised version. It seems I cannot post a link here, but look for
Billie is cute, she is sexy, she is saucy, she is cheeky, she is fun to be with, she has those voluptuous feminine forms. I love Billie.
She is everything that Fanny is not. Fanny, in one word is meek. Five minutes is enough I don’t even want to see the rest. They show Billie galloping around the grounds on horseback. Fanny would fall off a horse that went any faster than a slow walk. Sacrilege!
Billie would have been a great Mary Crawford, though,
@Momphert I was just about to leave a comment saying exactly what you said! :) Fanny is by far the meekest & mousiest of Jane Austen's heroines, a complete goody-two-shoes. I've read the book many times, and never once imagined Fanny Price as a vixenish bleached blonde! Makes me wonder if the casting directing ever read the book at all? And Aunt Norris seems too young and attractive, not at all the selfish judgmental busybody aunt we all love to hate. You just can't improve on the original.
@Momphert ABSOLUTLEY!! That's why I'm so bummed that the two movie adaptations both try and portray Fanny as something she's not! The meek, yes, are blessed, and their is a great opportunity to showcase this novel the way its meant.
By the way, I also think Blake Ritson is a PERFECT Mr. Elton, not so much an Edmund Bertram.
This adaptation, like all the others, feel as if the directors didn't even like the story they were making. Tisk Tisk.
@Momphert that's only how you've seen her in her other roles. personally, i think she plays the role of fanny price quite well. as fanny, she isnt trying to be saucy or sexy. additionally, in the novel, fanny says she gets over her fear of horses and becomes quite proficient at horse riding.
I feel so bad about saying this, but seriously, she's not like Fanny at all and I really liked this story. But with a Fanny like this I wont see any diffrence in manners between her and the girl Edmund falls in love with.
I love Jane Austen's novels and pretty much all the movies based on them, but I honestly can't focus to what's happening because I'm staring to Edmund [Blake Ritson] all the time. What should I do? :<
Maria Bertram ->Michelle Ryan aka lady Christina de Souza doctor who lovely actress, Fanny Price played by the brilliant Billie Piper aka Rose Tyler also in doctor who. Oh I just love when they play something else besides doctor who
@clpearson991 I agree. She is a bit too fiesty to be Fanny. It doesn't ruin the story for me, though. I never really liked Fanny Price, she's a bit of a wet rag in my opinion. But who cares? It's Rose Tyler!!!! lol, granted that comes from an absolute Doctor Who Fanatic
I'd like to see Fanny Price battle some Daleks...I think the Daleks would totally take her out.
It's not so much the casting of Billie Piper that bothers me as the writing of Fanny's character. It's a lose-lose situation with her. Her character in the book is too timid and would be lousy in a movie and all the movies have tried to make her stronger but that's annoying because it's so different from the book!
@clpearson991 , lol, I understand what you mean. I wish Austen had made her a little more lively. I feel like I just said something sacrilegious...questioning Jane Austen. I'm shocked at myself, lol.
"The young people were all at home, and sustained their share in the introduction very well, with much good humour, and no embarrassment, at least on the part of the sons, who, at seventeen and sixteen, and tall of their age, had all the grandeur of men in the eyes of their little cousin. " - Mansfield park, chapter 2. So he's supposed to be sixteen (and 24 for the rest of the movie). :)
Actually Fannie goes to live at Mansfield Park because Aunt Norris and Lady Bertram because they offer to do so, not because her mother tosses her off as inferred. And Sir Thomas is acting like a jerk, not like the book, certainly. Best portrayal of Sir Thomas is in the 1983 version.
This comment is coming from someone who never heard about this version before and who never read the book:
Can someone tell me why would they make another version so early when the 1999 version was so perfect?! They could have waited at less 20 years, it feels like if they had remade the Indiana Jones or Star Wars saga --> Don't touch it!
This said, the only thing I'm expecting from this film is a better kiss shared between Fanny and Edmund (because the 1999 one was a tinny disappointing)
@judyabbott3 The 1999 version is very much so different from the book. It depends if you'll enjoy watching something that is unlike the novel it was originally based on :)
...Billie Piper! That's so weird! –I started watching Doctor Who five days ago, and then looked this movie up after reading the book, without having any idea that they had the same main actress...
@macdahet I KNOW! Every adaptation Mr. Crawford is handsome (exceedingly so). I think it's kind of hard to show a plain character excluding enough charm to make two beautiful sisters fall in love with him in a short period of time.
Personally, I always picture Mr Crawford as Tom Hollander (Mr. Collins from P&P 2007).
@urbanr0cker you know what, I think Tom Hollander could pull off Mr.Crawford!!! He was pretty gross in P&P (because of stellar acting), but in Wives and Daughter's he's pretty charming - that's a good thought!
I think I prefered the 1999 version - it explained more clearly and in details, especially from the beginning where it showed Fanny's departing from her mother and siblings, whereas in this one, it just showed Fanny running around the house, which just moved too fast in my opinion. I mean, I already understand the story, but if for those who haven't yet read the book and go straight to watching this, probably wouldn't have a clue, even if Fanny narrated the story.
The tears at the start are so fake. There are no actual expression on the actresses face. Sory if it sounds like I'm hating, I just really love this book, so I'm critical of adaptations.
I didn't love the 1999 version, but I like this version even less. It strays from the original story even more than its predecesor. Fanny Price was a quiet, retiring girl and modern movie makers just can't seem to understand that. Furthermore, no young lady of that day would have been seen out with her hair loose as she does. It would have been considered incredibly improper, even unchaste. Even wild Lydia Bennett in the 1995 version of "Pride & Prejudice" didn't go out with her hair down.
@ruairaidh I so agree -.- Both versions of Mansfield Park managed to completely change the personality of the main character. They seem to think all Jane Austen heroines have to be like Lizzy Bennet or Marianne Dashwood. They can't grasp the idea of an anti-heroine like Fanny Price.
@Minty210 Tell me about it! It drives me nuts, especially as Mansfield Park is my favorite Austen novel. I hope I live long enough to see a production of Mansfield Park with Fanny's personality intact.
@ruairaidh there is a really really old version of mansfield park by bbc, and although it's really drawn-out and slow, and it's an older acting style, they really do get fanny's personality down pat! she's shy and retiring, but has a very quiet strength; it made me appreciate that old version a lot actually.
@justalittlebookworm Thanks! A friend shared knowledge of that version with me as well. She said BBC made film versions of all the Austen books in the early 1980s and though they were really old, they were remarkably true to the books. So they'll all go on my list to buy eventually.
Not the Fanny Price I imagined, but the guy playing Edmund isn't bad (his hair is kind of sexy). He does look alot like Adrien Brody. I love the way the men look in their clothes back in the day with the fitted pants and the billowing white sleeves of their shirts when they don't have their overcoats or jackets on. Hot!
@singingkid14 Oh yea, the extreme mistreatment of women, terrible international relations, extreme poverty and class differences closely followed a few decades later by the first sweat shops... great time to be born in. Honestly, these stories are nice and I love these movies... but I'm fine living in the 21st century...
I've seen part of the 1999 version which I disliked mainly because of the addition of opium tippling, slavery, its attendant brutality and sexual content. Such sensationalistic touches aren't needed in a period drama based on Austen. The opening scenes of this version have a rushed quality and I get the sensation that they wanted to breeze over the exposition as quickly as possible. As a result, characterizations suffer. That may be amended in latter scenes, I hope.
@QueenBoadicea I didn't like the 1997 version either, though it was my understanding on further reading about it that the allusions to slavery were introduced from Austen's other, unpublished, writings. However, I still would like to see a version of Mansfield Park that is true to the book, as this one isn't either. I have heard that a 1980s version exists which does the book justice.
The 1999 one is far superior, I watch this one for Edmund and Aunt Betram. I dislike Fanny Price in both this and the 1999 one and I like Blake in this one but JLM is definately the best. I think this adaptation is truer to the book with character personalities but I can't believe they missed out the Portsmouth sections. On the other hand the 2009 Emma was fab! RG and JLM were amazing with Blake and Michael Gambon :)
I would say this version is a lot closer to the book. The other one added some extra stuff to the story line, probably to make it more dramatic... Which is fine, but this one seems to stick to the book a lot better.
I love how everytime I watch a Jane Austen movie someone that plays in one plays in another lol

I like the 1999 version better, becasue this one leaves out more, but i think this one is so cute and i cant not like it.

...Billie Piper! That's so weird! –I started watching Doctor Who five days ago, and then looked this movie up after reading the book, without having any idea that they had the same main actress...

Well, aside from Billie Piper, so far I'm liking the look and behaviors of all the characters. Especially Lady Bertram and Miss Crawford.

they seem to misunderstand the fact that mr crawford is plain
macdahet 1 year ago
@macdahet i know!!!! that bothered me too!
justalittlebookworm 1 year ago
@macdahet I KNOW! Every adaptation Mr. Crawford is handsome (exceedingly so). I think it's kind of hard to show a plain character excluding enough charm to make two beautiful sisters fall in love with him in a short period of time.
Personally, I always picture Mr Crawford as Tom Hollander (Mr. Collins from P&P 2007).
urbanr0cker 1 year ago
@urbanr0cker you know what, I think Tom Hollander could pull off Mr.Crawford!!! He was pretty gross in P&P (because of stellar acting), but in Wives and Daughter's he's pretty charming - that's a good thought!

I think I prefered the 1999 version - it explained more clearly and in details, especially from the beginning where it showed Fanny's departing from her mother and siblings, whereas in this one, it just showed Fanny running around the house, which just moved too fast in my opinion. I mean, I already understand the story, but if for those who haven't yet read the book and go straight to watching this, probably wouldn't have a clue, even if Fanny narrated the story.

sdkramer7654 1 year ago
The tears at the start are so fake. There are no actual expression on the actresses face. Sory if it sounds like I'm hating, I just really love this book, so I'm critical of adaptations.
GracelessDementor 1 year ago
I didn't love the 1999 version, but I like this version even less. It strays from the original story even more than its predecesor. Fanny Price was a quiet, retiring girl and modern movie makers just can't seem to understand that. Furthermore, no young lady of that day would have been seen out with her hair loose as she does. It would have been considered incredibly improper, even unchaste. Even wild Lydia Bennett in the 1995 version of "Pride & Prejudice" didn't go out with her hair down.
ruairaidh 1 year ago 3
@ruairaidh I so agree -.- Both versions of Mansfield Park managed to completely change the personality of the main character. They seem to think all Jane Austen heroines have to be like Lizzy Bennet or Marianne Dashwood. They can't grasp the idea of an anti-heroine like Fanny Price.
Minty210 1 year ago 4
@Minty210 Tell me about it! It drives me nuts, especially as Mansfield Park is my favorite Austen novel. I hope I live long enough to see a production of Mansfield Park with Fanny's personality intact.
Marhaba1973 1 year ago
@ruairaidh there is a really really old version of mansfield park by bbc, and although it's really drawn-out and slow, and it's an older acting style, they really do get fanny's personality down pat! she's shy and retiring, but has a very quiet strength; it made me appreciate that old version a lot actually.
justalittlebookworm 1 year ago

Billie Piper as Fanny Price? Didnt see that one coming!
Also, is the guy who plays Tom also the guy who plays Duncan on Secret Diary of a Call Girl?
lovingtheglam 1 year ago
I've seen part of the 1999 version which I disliked mainly because of the addition of opium tippling, slavery, its attendant brutality and sexual content. Such sensationalistic touches aren't needed in a period drama based on Austen. The opening scenes of this version have a rushed quality and I get the sensation that they wanted to breeze over the exposition as quickly as possible. As a result, characterizations suffer. That may be amended in latter scenes, I hope.
QueenBoadicea 1 year ago
@QueenBoadicea I didn't like the 1997 version either, though it was my understanding on further reading about it that the allusions to slavery were introduced from Austen's other, unpublished, writings. However, I still would like to see a version of Mansfield Park that is true to the book, as this one isn't either. I have heard that a 1980s version exists which does the book justice.
ruairaidh 1 year ago
well for me 1999 version was better!

both 1999 and 2007 versions r wonderful :)
