I don't mean to disrespect the dead, but I think it was partly his fault and him not braking and trying to get around the people who braked for the crash because they all had clear view of the accident and the people ahead of him were moving at a slower pace than he was(even b4 the white car lost its back end) which means he didn't brake. That's why he rear ended the car ahead of him and went flying, if he braked as soon as he saw the crash he wouldn't have hit the car that got in his lane. RIP.

Wow. Watching the replay it is amazing to me that Will Power is still alive. His car makes contact and goes airborne @0:25, then he flies into the wall and up into the catch fence. As far as I can tell, Dan Wheldon's car didn't hit the catch fence, but landed upside-down and slide for a long way. It looks like he may have never lifted like all of the drivers in front of him, and obviously didn't see what was happening until it was too late. What a tragedy.
@boardhead62 Wheldon did hit the catch fence, take a look at the still photos of the event, his car clearly hit it cockpit first and exploded in a fireball. Power's car hit the fence floor first and so he survived, by pure luck.

People act as though this was a freak tornado that plucked someone off a street in daylight. these drivers are challenging gravity and the laws of pyhsics each time they make a left turn in this sport. Sebastian Saavedra's wreckless attempt to get into the inside lanes started the chain reaction that ultimately killed Dan Wheldon. Sebastian needs to be fined and banned from Indy Car permanently. He has a history of being wreckless. They should force Sebastian to make restitution to Dan Wheldon's family.

this is why indy cars needs to be shut down. The series sucks,the cars are so unsafe, they are way behind in safety. No one shows up to the races other than the Indy 500. Dan Wheldon wasnt even full time at this point, if they hadnt had that stupid 5 million dollar thing (which no nascar or f1 or any other racing series driver showed up) Dan would be alive today. Indy needs to shut down for good. RIP Dan, i feel so bad for your kids, you were a good man, shame that you had to die...

big shock, someone died. can bitch about how dangerous it is, but that goes for all sports. something shitty always happens on occasion. he knew the consequences and thats the bottom line. if they thought the field was too fast than apparently it wasnt that big of issue if it werent stopped before hand. lastly, sports shopuldnt be banned, stupidity should. dont cry about it if you know the consequences and still follow through. thats a life rule in general. screeeeech!! im done.

People act as though this was a freak tornado that plucked someone off a street in daylight. these drivers are challenging gravity and the laws of pyhsics each time they make a left turn in this sport. The odds are high mother nature will exact a high price with a minor miscalculation. To me, that is not a sport. It is a nonstop gamble with mother nature. I think it is just plain wrong , if not sinful.

33 is too young to die, but he died doing what he loved doing the most; racing. Being a racer myself I know how dangerous and risky it is competing in this sport. That's exactly why we love it so much - the thrill and rush of adrenaline through you when you see that green flag drop. We lost an important icon in the racing community today, and all of us go-karters look up to him as he started his career with go-karting himself.
Thoughts and prayers go out to all of his loved ones.

Sebastian Saavedra's wreckless attempt to get into the inside lanes started the chain reaction that ultimately killed Dan Wheldon. Sebastian needs to be fined and banned from Indy Car permanently. He has a history of being wreckless. They should force Sebastian to make restitution to Dan Wheldon's family.

@TriGGlety1974 his car was at 30 seconds you see a car go airborne at 32 to 35 seconds you see dan wheldons car slide on its side . Also at 35 seconds you see it hit the barrier , at 36 to 37 seconds you see it go though the fire . At 40 seconds you you see it slide along the race track .

I'm watching because I still can't even see Dan's car - it was a mangled mess of several cars and once Dan went airborne, you knew it wasn't good. Indy and Nascar are an illusion. The number of cars and those high-speed tracks are used to make things more exciting, sacrificing car and pilot quality, as well as their safety, or even their lives.
It's high time racing in America becomes a true sport, and not this fanservice feast it is now.
Btw, nothing against the US, this is just about racing.
And to the guy down there, braking is the worst thing to do in this case.
