  • i think this is quality, and he's a great guitar player, but i think this solo in this song is a bit disjointed and not that great on the ear

  • I can hear some bb king in that solo!!

  • that tone ...

  • Pretty turkey.xD

  • Does anyone know how to get a tone this smooth on a strat? I try to dial down the tone knobs on the guitar, but if I go too far the sound gets way too muddy. I just can't seem to strike a good balance between clarity and smoothness. Also, any suggestions for an amp EQ?

  • @cowboycliche022 it'll be hard on a strat, sometimes there are no substitutions for the real thing :/

  • @cowboycliche022 sorry... dont think youll be able to do that... single coils sound/respond way different than humbuckers... but i can get pretty close with my lp... but trust me.. be happy with ur strat, i want a strat soo bad!

  • sorry there's no else like me.. goodluck though XD

  • I love it when i get the chills from good music!! : D

  • That tone in the solo was something beautiful.

    So "BB Kingish".

  • @JoaoAndre001

    bloody right it was :P

  • John Mayer's best album for sure.

  • Look at how Humble he is..Not like that anymore but he is still a Legend in my book. :)

  • For fuck sake Letterman, memorize the 2 lines you have to say to introduce a great artist. lol

  • The guitar tone is just spectacular. Don't forget, he has that beast of a two-rock head and cab behind him.. ;)

  • wow my first time seeing john mayer on a gibson, and yea im not american...

  • Thumbs up if your watching this in 2011. <3 leyend

  • @tallitagutierrez1794 Thumbs up if your watching this in 2012 !!!

  • i still remember when i made my ex gf listen to this song . .. how she cried and i enjoyed it !!

  • @abhinavfromdelhi Harsh, but I understand the motive :L

  • @KevinMoranMusic cheers man !!

  • @abhinavfromdelhi You fucking legend ahah

  • @iRiselyTech haha

  • Sometimes you wonder what this guy has been through to produce all these beautiful songs.

  • Music god

  • is it normal that i just jizzed in my pants?

  • his guitar is so sexy!

  • Amazing song!!!

  • he sings my thoughts exactly. i love john mayer

  • its a clapton es335 to be exact

  • so much talent....

  • 2:55 so sick

  • gibson 339 yo.

  • @jwallguitar its a 60's 335

  • @PeteWojMusic really? is the body of the 60's 335 a little bit smaller? or is John Mayer taller than I expect. It looks a little smaller like a 339. But it does make way more sense that he would play a 60's 335 over a $2000 dollar 339. considering John Mayer has a bajillion dollars. He probably has a team of supermodels waxing down his guitar collection 24/7!

  • @jwallguitar definitely a 335. It looks small because he like 6'3"/6'4"

  • @jwallguitar yeah, Mayer's like 6'4 and he's got the biggest hands ive ever seen. thats why and how he can play all those crazy 5 note chords. you know whats funny is when he plays a G chord in the open position. most dudes play the root G of the chord on the 3rd fret of the E string with either their middle or pointer finger. Mayer almost always uses his thumb for a G in open position. If he can use his thumb for root notes of open position chords imagine what he can do with the rest...

  • @PeteWojMusic ah! mystery solved, thanks!

  • That tone is out of this world

  • You think he would sell me his guitar? I got 100 bucks saved so far...

  • Right at the spot! Damn this is good!

  • how can you dislike this? who are you mere 14 people anyway?!

  • .. that's not his band

  • 14 people's significant other found another.

  • One of the few guitarists who can make a 335 seem normal sized. Well, either that, or Gibson is making him 9/10 scale guitars.

  • @darkaug2 It's possibly a Gibson 339

  • @RoyPortel its a 60's 335

  • who the fuck wld dislike this shit? Fuck idiots!

  • I think he found many new ones. Aniston, simpson and Minka kelly dislike this

  • used to really like john mayer. i still love his guitar playing but i just can't help but hate his voice now. maybe it's him as a person i just can't get past.

like i said though, he is a brilliant guitar player.

  • Excellent. Simply excellent.

  • such a good band....

  • enjoyflow! not copying the greatest John, but my own version! :) peace! on enjoyflow! :D

  • Comment removed

  • GOOD SWEET FUCK!

  • Yeah kids now this is music. Support this and forget all that bieber fever shit...

  • 12 confused the dislike button for dis i like

  • Those were the days. Wow. What I would do to be able to play like, even if I would be restricted to just my bedroom.

  • I love what he does with this blues scale. It sounds just like Peter Green's Need Your Love So Bad. Definitely my favorite track from Continuum, but that album is full of a bunch of other gems. I highly recommend it to anyone.

  • fucking LEGEND!!

  • this solo entering is so good. I feel like i'm gonna cry kkkk

  • The intro is similar to "drown in my own tears" by Ray Charles

  • Really good!

  • This was back in his prime 8) the good days....

  • john aunque me rompas el corazon siempre te escuchare.

  • Im hearin lots of old blues artists in his styling...Guitar Slim, T Bone Walker, BB King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy...

Clapton and other "white boys" have emulated the style of American Blues from these cats for a long time and unless you can appreciate the blues for the roots they came from, you might think they are not so hot, but in fact they are replicating an old style which sounds "toned down."

..its a beautiful thing! Let it Be!

  • He is just awesome!

  • it's amazing when Hendrix, BB King, SRV and Clapton play in one person

  • @jarekk10

    Amen.

  • 3:10 to 3:17, he forgets the chords...

  • @dizzack he also says "you gunna do some things you wouldn't let me do" lol good thing it was the end of the song

  • How can you not jizz when you listen to this

  • lol, put som facial hair on JM and he looks like johnny depp :P

  • lol ya right "mediocre" guitar skills, get a clue and stop listening to his pop stuff and check out the trio

  • Love it then........Love it now! Saw him 3rd row in Houston in September! AMAZING!!

  • 2:59 orgasm face

  • @chonchon7 Dang, my computer skips everytime! I wanna see!!!! GRRR!

  • i wish i had that 355.. ):

  • Please people.. let your ears do the talking.

  • Love his style back then

  • PURE CLASS!

  • as you can see, he makes the most out of every guitar he has.

oh wait, he has over 200.

    ...

    i want an es-335.

  • look at that monster pedal setup : o

  • @sk8terpr0 tubescreamer, aquapuss, t rex replica, keeley katana, and tuner!

  • An authentic artist and songwriter on ALL levels!

  • lmao, he is NOT mediocre at all as far as guitar playing

  • that singing over that last big bend over at 2:45 , he shoulda done into the mic.

    i think it sounded awesome!

  • I've made a cover of this great song.

Check it out on my page!

You will also find another JM covers that i've made.

  • by far one of the best musicains in years

  • awesome song writer...absolutely takes you deep into and out of a breakup

  • One of the best 335 tones ever.

  • @TMMSfanCLUB THE best...

  • this song help me get through breakup

  • this dude is all about the feel

  • The solo sounds a teenee bit like BB King

  • @shizyballer That's the point!!!! BB is one of John's biggest influences, not as big as Stevie or Jimi, but he's up there...

  • he always plays with really great blues tones... really adds to the feeling. love that ES-335, I want to touch it tenderly.

  • Amen. :)

  • I like John Mayer, and I don't like comparing musicians. But have a listen to "Need Your Love So Bad," by Peter Green, from the late 60's. He was a truly gifted guitarist, vocalist and songwriter before he became ill, and I know John M. would agree!

  • Mediocre guitar skills?

  • hes not mediocore but I dont see all the hype about his guitar playing.. there are thousands of guitar players out there who can play at his level. I guess ppl just arent used to seeing "talent" in pop music anymore

  • @sativalifestyle actually if you don't understadn all the hype about his guitar playing i don't think u have listened to enough of his stuff, or u don't realize how much feel the guy has and how tastefull u no. but yea if u have im sorry just my opinion

  • @sativalifestyle very valid point..... its not only about chops though...... at this level its about the phrasing more than anything. we all can speak english, but we have hemmingway and then the rest of us regular folk.

  • yeah, fuck the "virtuosos", this is what guitar playing is all about.

  • Just awesome ! !

  • This is good.

  • John Mayer Assassin Music Video Now Up On Youtube!

  • John just steal the music listen to i need youre love so bad from fleetwod mc

  • man! jm´s guitar is singging!!!

  • absolutely love that he was playing with paul and the band..

  • think his guitar skills are far from mediocre, check the solo there man!

  • John Mayer was sooo much better with long hair

  • to non guitarists-the tone he's using is almost impossible to solo in, because pretty much every time people use it it sounds like shit. he's such a master, a god, a beast, a true talent. John mayer is so ridiculous not even he knows it's overwhelming man. such emotional music, great lyrics, perfect guitar playing, perfect voice (not as good now) just a master of music

  • Neck pick on up a 335, roll off the treble... that's actually a pretty common clean blues tone. B.B. King style. Not impossible to solo in at all, I think you're giving him a bit too much credit in that regard hahaha. He's definitely a great player though and that really helps him sound so good

  • that is really beautiful! love it!

  • am i correct if i say he got on his pedalboard:

    Boss TU

    Keeley katana

    Aqua puss

    Boss BD2

    TS808

    T-rex replica

    ... ?

  • @SuperB00gs woah! u know ur pedals!

  • @SuperB00gs he did for the trio. but its changed loads now. now he uses two ibanez ts-10's, marshall original bluesbreaker pedal, klon centaur, eventide stuff, roger linn, buddy guy wah, pete cornish ng-2, korg g4, keeley katanas, way huge aqua puss, an mxr eq etc etc...

  • r u kiddin? this is the best version of this song ever. just listen how easy & free his guitar playing is. and how powerful the song gets after the solo. this is realy wonderful!!! :)

  • this soung means so much

  • haha (o i said that part)lol

  • And it's easy to find another one as you mostly do the dumping and you have a fine ass! On top of it you're loaded with talent ! Go ahead blues man!

  • best bit!! 2:50 - 2:52

Who's is that?? I mean...that particular lick, is it hendrix, srv?

  • Sounds a bit like an SRV lick from texas flood, but its not really that specific

  • It's a very nice one yes, but I think it is just a standard Jazz/blues lick, mate. :)

  • @bluesy007 i think its a BB one.

  • that ending...purrfect

  • Anyone else here the similarity btwn this song and Peter Green's "Need Your Love So Bad"? An influence for this song maybe? Love it either way.

  • Both of them are blues.

  • Oh, no doubt. And I love JM. I'm just sayin that they're the same chords, in pretty much the exact same progression, and a very very similar strum pattern. Definitely enjoy what John did with the song though.

  • Just listened to "Need Your Love So Bad" and can definitely hear the similarities. Funny how that works. Most likely it wasn't intentional. Music repeats itself from time to time. Both are soothing to listen to.

  • Just a blues progression...

  • Ah these were the days, when he had long hair and was truly playing blues night in night out

  • yeeeaaaahhhhhh

  • love that guitar

  • I like his music....he is good

  • I think music as an art form is mostly about conveying feelings and expressing thoughts, that´s the ultimate reason why you pick up a guitar, write a song, paint or sculpt, it´s not only about pushing it forward it is also about doing it right and this guy has heart, his songs are real, anyone can relate and that´s the magic of it, making songs so personal and still be able to move some else´s heart, with a phrase or a chord. Mediocre, I think not.

  • @B3toRamirez thats exactly it

  • what a fucking talent!

  • wow i just relised watching this.... that john mayor sounds ALOT like Colin James.... coool :)

  • I wish he would write a sequel to this called 'Found Another You'...

  • wow, his voice sounds amazing in this. I know typically his vocals arent his strong point but i thought he sounded great here

  • John Mayer ROCKS ! ! Awesome song , he is AMAZING

  • Really random question here guys, but..... does anybody know where i can find shoes like the one's John is wearing in this video, or maybe even a style name? Any help is greatly appreciated :)

  • envy anyone??

  • You're confusing envy with contempt.

  • i'd rather listening to his mediocre guitar skills over most "virtuosos"... its not all about who knows more scales and who can play s16th notes at 200bpm... this guy is a great songwriter and plays blues guitar with as much felling as the great blues players...

  • on what basis is his guitar skills mediocre? his playing is FAR from mediocre. i agree that he has great feeling though

  • he's not mediocre at all... i was just replying to a comment made by some douche...

  • Mediocre? Ahahahahahahahahah. He's good, IMO. Very good. Very up-there. Have you heard his "I don't trust myself", the live version? It's amazing. Although I agree, though. It's not about the scales. It's about emotion.

  • @davidclassg1 Couldn't agree more. I'm very tired of "progressive" players for all the sweeps and speed there is no feeling. I can't find the heart of anything progressive, which has a wierd name considering its been the same boring nonsense for years.

  • @davidclassg1 mediocre guitar skills????

  • @tobiassegura MAYER will be the next Eric Clapton

  • @derm3000

C'mon man seriously? John Mayer will NEVER be the the next Eric Clapton. John Mayer's gonna be John Mayer; just as Clapton is Clapton. Styles may be similiar amongst players but at the end of the day they are a product of themselves + influence; but never are they a follow-up or replacement of another. No one can replace Clapton, or SRV, or Hendrix; case and point; there will be a day (that I believe is already here) where no one will replace John Mayer. Just a new name will be born.

  • @surfer1211

IDK man, I'm a huge Clapton fan. The best musical live concert I've ever seen in my life was Clapton. He's a genius, no doubt. Mayer has a long way to go in my opinion to catcvh the legend of Clapton but listen to "In Repair" and tell me he doesn't remind you of some Clapton/ His blues styles. He's definitely going to be a legend if he continues to create music like he is and has been. There's room for both of them.

  • @davidclassg1 how can you call john mayer's guitarplaying mediocre? john mayer is one of the most talented guitarists alive, man

  • @davidclassg1 how can u call john mayer's guitarplaying mediocre? john mayer is one of the most talented guitarists alive.

other than that, that u called his playing mediocre, i totally agree with u, his feeling when he plays is incredible and, as u said, it's not about who can play the fastest or anything like that. i mean, if john mayer wants to play fast he can, i mean, he does sometimes, but when he does it, it's not to show off, it's too much feeling in his playing for it to be showing off

  • @davidclassg1 Agree 100% !

  • @davidclassg1 yes! but he is technically also a very good player ;) take a listen at the where the light is solos! amazing ;) he combines feel and technique. most other "modern style" guitarist have a lack of feel

  • @davidclassg1 Mediocre my ass man, If you listen to some of his covers and lesser known stuff he can pick with the best of em

  • @davidclassg1 I would not call Mayer's guitar chops "mediocre" by any means. Look at anything he's ever done, consistent great music comes out of this guy.

  • @davidclassg1 I wouldnt call his guitar skills mediocre though, he knows about as much theory and scales and chords as much as these ''virtuosos'' do, he doesnt play that much in this video but its because its a B.B. king style guitar song, but go listen to The John Mayer Trio and you will see what im talking about or even one of his more pop songs like neon. he is an amazing guitarist.

  • @musicdude195

Too bad he doesn't play B.B King style at all here. o:

  • @musicdude195 its not a b.b. king style guitar song at all.

he plays a lot of b.b. king licks as usual.

but in no way does the song even remotely resemble b.b. king.

john mayers guitar skills are as good as any guitar god.

as far as i am concerned he is one of em.

the difference between guitar gods and players is where they are able to take their playing.

everyone at home can play this solo now that johns played it.

nobody at home would have made it up himself.

  • @davidclassg1

    mediocre guitar skills?

    the fuck..

  • @davidclassg1 "mediocre" sarcasm i hope

  • @davidclassg1 MEDIOCRE ?! His playing is awesoooooome !
