Thanks - to all of you who post these old clips from TV in the Bay Area and elsewhere. It's a lot of fun to see the videos. I appreciate the time it takes to get these posted!
I personally remembering being in school when this quake hit. I was in class watching a video (actually a filmstrip) about drunk driving or something. When the audio starting playing music, I began dancing and clowning around. My teacher hollered and said "quit dancing, you're shakin' the room!" Then the other teacher jumped from his chair and yelled "that's not them, that's an earthquake man, that's an earthquake man!"
Doing a little research on this quake: This particular event occurred in April and not March. The actual date was April 24, 1984. It's officially referred to as the Morgan Hill Earthquake. There were a lot of people who experienced very high velocity shaking in the Morgan Hill area and surrounding areas. It really primed people in the bay area about thinking about the quake threat. It scared a lot of people.
get ready >>> I so remeber all the 80's quakes>>> this video prove it!!! I so know the hayward is going to hit in the next year>>if not way sooner>>>> look up the Landers Quake!!! >>
Gosh, I remember Jim Paymar with KRON, 4. Let me see, who else with him (testing my memory): Sylvia Chase, and Roz Abrams. wow, how tv media has changed...
Loma Prieta was MUCH more intense at a 7.1 on the Richter Scale. It was a jolting, swaying quake that levelled buildings, parts of the Bay Bridge, and the Cypress Freeway in Oakland. Not to mention all of the damage near the epicenter in the Santa Cruz area. This one was big but not catastrophic. Thanks for viewing!
RIP Dave

I really enjoy watching these old videos. The anchors were local "celebrities." We don't have anchors like that anymore. :(

I remember this. I was a freshman in high school (John Swett in Crockett) sitting in science class when we felt the shaking.

Is the voice in the first clip Jim Paymar?
manhizzy 4 years ago
No, not Jim Paymar -- it was a KNTV anchor -- don't remember his name off hand.

I wasn't quite 5 years old when this happened, which probably has a lot to do with it, but I don't even remember this quake.
