The first time I saw that ridiculous documentary I wondered why Neil wasn't on camera yapping about his faked Moon trips too...Then I remembered his other uncomfortable interviews and cryptic, brief speeches, and realized that he was tired of lying for NASA.

The funny thing is that Kubrick is a writer/director--his special effects in 2001 were created by Douglas Trumbull. '2001' won an Oscar for effects in '69, but Kubrick's/Trumbull's depiction of the lunar surface was entirely incorrect.
In 1970, the 1969 movie 'Marooned'--about an Apollo CSM trapped in orbit--won the Oscar for its own special effects. State-of-the-art FX in '68-69, but either incorrect or totally hoky compared to today's CGI. No way to film a hoax then.
