Oh god wow!! I remember this ad when i was a kid!! I would get really excited when it came on tv!! great tune too!! you got the power!! ...........i wish i was stuck in this year, cos it was the best!!
I remember it too and it was from 1986, I had been in hospital and was recovering from an op, So I watched a lot of telly and this ad used to play, it was still being shown in '88 beside the 'chinheads' ad, didn't like it so much.
This video is based on a greek myth...."Sisyphean challenge"
As a punishment from the gods for his trickery, Sisyphus was compelled to roll a huge rock up a steep hill, but before he could reach the top of the hill, the rock would always roll back down again, forcing him to begin again.[2] The maddening nature of the punishment was reserved for Sisyphus due to his hubristic belief that his cleverness surpassed that of Zeus.
I used to enjoy McEwans lager! In fact, I think it was the first thing I drank when I started! It may not be the best, but its still better than that Mexican pisswater known as Corona!
Superb tune, superb remix, memorable advert - can't believe it is from so long ago. The only reason anyone is watching this, and the only reason I am watching this, is because of the excellence of the tune. (McEwen's lager was pash!)
It was a special remix produced for the 'Escher' ad. They did release it on a promo 3in CD in 1988 which I have somewhere . They mixed the drums and vocals differently but the version on the CD is longer than the ad edit which add the bell dongs on the end and one more synth overdub (the low bass drone at the end). Other than that you can tell the differences between the album version and this one with the 'Ahhhhs' and the fact it changes some lyrics, notably Power to Tower and stuff like that.
Can you still get mckewens lager ? i remember it being a lovely pint yrs ago, I also got WIN-you got the power tracks 7 & 12in versions, got them off limewire.
thanks for posting this. it appeared during a world cup finals in which scotland were playing - mexico 1986? it was quite stunning at that time and got much discussion in teh pub. it appears on a Win album which i used to have.
Some strange responses in here! For the record I thought this was a great ad, everything about it made you turn around and look at the TV, unlike most of the predictable 80s hard sell. Always loved the tune too.
This video is great! There were real artists involved in producing this-something London records & Barry Adamson may have reason to be proud for. But the band had nothing-sorry.
typically failuluristic jocko alcoholoic pish- DO NOT APLAUDE THIS I spoke to the late stuart adamson at this time and he hated the use of his music against these adverts at this time...nics pics baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad message- do not dring to the rythmn pleeeeeeese!
i totally agree with kenward4242! the band were called "Win" from edinburgh in the 80s. with a name like that google is not much use!! thanks 4 posting
Absolutely fan-bloomin'-tastic. I've been waiting 19 years to see this video again, and it was worth the wait. Brilliant imagery, fantastic music, I need say no more.
From the pathetic 'Blues Brothers' beer ad. parody to the usual embarrassment of a lot of Scottish things in the media, this piece had abstraction and style.
I wonder which company made it?
Did they do films?
Shall we ever know?
And the band Win were special but it ended very quickly.

where can i get a copy of this tune been after it for years not the WIN original but the version used on the advert appreciate any help
magpiedaft 3 years ago
I prefer this to the actual Win track...
It's the "ah, ah-ah-ah" in the first 20 secs that makes it better IMHO :)
Was the remix specifically for McEwans or was it taken from a Win album?
