At the end here, this was one of those rare situations where scoring the TD actually didn't make sense. There was 1:14 left in the game and NW had no timeouts left. As soon as Baker got the first down, he should have SLID and MSU could have run out the clock for a GUARANTEED win. But by scoring the TD, he put MSU up by 8 with 1:07 left. That's more than enough time for NW to march down the field and send the game to OT. It obviously didn't happen THIS TIME, but the possibility was there.
@phillyspartanfan Yeah i understand what you're saying but how are you going to tell a kid, Hey Edwin, you broke three tackles to get to the endzone but slide instead. His mindset was to score, and you cant tell a kid to slide.
@MichiganState2013 The thing is, I'm not necessarily saying it was BAKER'S error. If the coaches explained what I described above beforehand, then it was Baker's error. If they didn't, then it was the coaches' error. But either way, the players DEFINITELY should have been instructed to just get the first down and slide (if possible). What's more important, looking cool but leaving your opponent with one final chance to win or sacrificing a little style and getting the GUARANTEED win?
@phillyspartanfan Yeah i understand what you're saying, i would have done the same thing too, but this is a college kid. The only time i have ever seen anything like that was in a Pro game but we won anyway, i personally would not have stopped just because that is what you're taught to do as a little kid. Coach probably told him to slide but he didn't and after breaking three tackles i didn't think he would. Was it right....no, did it work out, yes.
