This makes it crystal clear to me that Bowie's German got a lot better when he actually lived in Berlin for a while (listen to 'Heroes/Helden' and compare). This is how he learnt it, not as German, because he had no clue, but a phonetic English approximation! "Shau ows dinem Fenster. Shau vair drowsen sitzt. Ik bin's, dair here vartet, shohn dee ganzer Narkt. Venn doo darn dine Howse fairlest vink-e ik oont roof: Aha, voonder-shernes Mate-ken, Mein brennent Fairlarngen air-vark-te am Montak ..."
