The man decided not to take the elevator because the power went out. He took the stairs because the power went out. When he got into the parking lot he remembered that his wife was hooked up to, let's say, a metal lung? That works. She was hooked up to a metal lung, and she died when she power went out because she suffocated. The thing that gets me is why he didn't go back to help his wife XP.
