  • I hate Carol. I really wish there was a clip of Burt doing his "grandpa" thing to Wendy, or even just what episode it's in. Any ideas?

  • So, what, she changes her mind? I'm confused. Maybe I'll just have to wait a few weeks till this episode airs where I am...

  • WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT OF A GAY CHARACTER IF YOU MAKE HIM MARRY A CHICK.

This pisses me off...I'm watching this series on Antenna TV Network and I just got to where he found out Carol's pregnant. I saw this coming, but I'm still pissed. I never liked Carol cause she tried to convert him so much, but this is just... UGH. Jodie is my fave character. But if you ask me, this makes him not gay. Ugh.

  • @GroovyHippie95 a) made in the 70s, Jodie was the first gay character on TV so mistakes were made unfortunately... b) he thought marrying her after getting her pregnant was the honorable thing to do c) the makers of this show had never heard of bisexuality XD d) don't forget the cock up they did with his sex change (gay people aren't like that), e) she did change her mind, saying it wouldn't work as a family and the child deserves a "proper" father.

  • Ummm, he's gay, that would have been a really crappy marriage.

  • @MANofBernstein I KNOW, RIGHT???

  • probably the sadest episode is the one were Jody tries to kill himself . I still remember the old guy in the next bed trying to comfort him, in his own way, reassuring him

  • Please upload the episode where Jodie first meets his baby daughter (I think Carol's mother brings her to his apartment). The original scene is so incredibly sweet and the reaction of the studio audience to the baby grabbing Jodie's nose is funny.

  • @yruwatchingnow Season 3, episode 1. I won't upload the whole episode but I'll see if I can upload that scene. I need to get a tissue just thinking about that scene. *sniffles*

  • I HATE CAROL!!!! Most hate-able character on the show.

    - She whores her way into Jodie's pants & he caved out of pity.

    - She carries his baby & when he offers to Marry her & take care of the child, she pulls this stunt. If she didnt want to marry him she should have told him before, not after hes dumped Dennis & prepared to change his life for her & the baby.

    - She tries to make it so that Jodie will NEVER see the baby.

    - Then she ABANDONS the baby.

    - Then she comes back out of the...

  • blue and sues Jodie for custody of the baby in a courtroom where she lies through her teeth.

    - She loses custody and then KIDNAPS the baby and takes her across the country to every seedy location imaginable.

Carol is a fucking horrible person that seemed to be put on this Earth just to make Jodie's life miserable.

  • Great writing & characters!

My favorite is the part where Jody regresses into Julius, the elderly Jew.

  • I wonder what's keeping her ?

    Common sense.

    Lulz.

  • I just loved Cathryn Damon...She died way to soon.

  • As funny as Crystal was, and he could be absolutely hilarious, I think he was better at drama than at comedy. Same goes for Howie Mandel (in St. Elsewhere - WOW). Also, Wass and Mulligan had superb dramatic ability as well. Both 'sisters,' too. When Jessica was being led away at the trial and said, "I didn't do this," (just those 4 words, IIRC), the Hoover Dam in me broke. When Elaine died in Danny's arms - oh, it's all over - I'm crying again now.

  • @rem2267 to finish up my long-winded post....

Anyone who scoffs at 'Soap' and labels it as being mindless, crude drivel and not much else, are wrong. Case in point -- this beautiful scene you just watched. It is great to read so many positive words from YouTube users!!

  • For a series that had some really idiotic storylines, especially in its final season, it also had some of the most touching and moving scenes, like this one, I've ever seen on TV.

  • waaait what happened to her?

  • Carol? She goes home to live with her mum in Texas, Jodie follows, asking to know what happens and Carol told him she decided the three of them, including the baby Wendy, wouldn't be "normal" and she wanted to marry a straight man and he would become the baby's father. The storyline crops up a lot later again.

  • Yea. Ok thanks dear :D

Also, why was he upset when she was gone? Was he ...excited to be a dad and that was it?

  • Yep. He really loved/loves that baby.

  • @GoldenGal42 Carol got so mean remember?

  • I hate Carol. SO. MUCH. ;(

  • The part where Burt actually puts his arm around Jodie and treats him like his own son was so touching...and Billy Crystal was wonderful. Such great actors on this show.

  • They should have killed Carol instead of Elaine!!!!!

  • this show was such a jem. it was hilarious and touching at the same time. it was consistantly brilliant until the fouth season when Dick Claire and Jenna McMahon were hired as writers. They totally ruined the show by turning it into an unfunny Carol Burnett-like skit. To this day its hard for me to watch the fouth season of this show. What a shame

  • As far as I could remember season four wasn't too bad (I'm rewatching it now and I'm only up to season two), though I do remember that something in Danny's character had been lost. Plus the lack of Benson.

  • That's what I loved about this show it could make you laugh hysterically then make you cry like a baby. Remember when Elaine died in Danny's arms? I loved this show so much. I wonder what Susan Harris (the show's creator) is up to now

  • I remember another very touching scene involving Billy Crystal as Jodie. He had just taken an overdose of pills in the hospital, as he laid in bed his room mate played by Harold Gould told him of two touching deaths of his past wives and no matter how bad life may kick you down, it's better to still go on and live life.

  • If I had a way to put the dvd onto my computer I would put that scene up next.

The scene I always remembering is the one where Jodie says goodbye to Ronnie (Harold Gould), that was a really uplifting scene as well.

  • I think you have inspired me to go out and get at least the first 2 seasons of Soap on DVD. It was part of my Tuesday night line up in the 70's with Happy Days Laverne and Shirley and 3's Company, of course this scene is so strong emotionally, the show could touch you as well as make you laugh at many hilarious scenes, what a fine show

  • I could never stand chuck and bob

  • oh my god!! me too!!! it was so annoying!

  • An incredibly overlooked gem of a series. This episode still makes me cry 30 years later, the performances by Crystal, mom Damon, and both Mulligan and Wass are stunning. They look and sound like a real family.

  • Mary (Cathryn Damon) and Jodie (Billy Crystal) are brilliant in this scene.

  • Some fine, understated acting all around.

    Excuse me...(SOBBING VIOLENTLY)

  • The grandfather is priceless!

  • I thought he was gay? He should be relieved.

  • He is/was. He got Carol pregnant and believed marrying her was the right thing to do. I suppose he's annoyed because she made him give up Dennis and men in general.

  • this is funny

  • I love him, he's my favorite. I hate Carol. What a manipulative ho!

  • @bluefairy2432 This scene really made me care for Jodie as a person a lot. He was willing to sacrifice his happiness for the kid. Carol used him.

  • Omg he's so cute!

Bless him! I feel like crying!

  • Wow. I was not expecting that. Good clip. Who's Wendy? :-)

  • Jodie's baby (basically he got Carol pregnant and then he decided to marry her - just reminding you)

  • Okay thanks. I was maybe 13 or 13 last time I saw "Soap"....until recently. So whatever happened to Carol???

  • Her mother gives Jodie Wendy when you find out that Carol ran off with some random person. Then she pops out of nowhere and takes Jodie to court over who should have Carol. Carol lies and her mother tells the judge so Jodie wins, then Carol takes Wendy and goes off somewhere. Then Jodie hires a private detective to get Wendy back, he gets Wendy back and falls in love with the detective - and then the show ended.

  • ...although you left out one other thing that would happen to Jodie before the end of the series. Jodie would have an accident while he and the detective were investigating that would lead Jodie to think and act like an old Jewish man living in Brooklyn back in the early 20th century.
