Look again, cookieman .. . this is 100% CG. Anyone who believes it to be real is mistaken. Check with Snopes or any other number of sites that has the actual story behind this very cool video. You might also check with the U of Iowa, which (BTW) does not have a Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall . . .
This incredible machine was built as a collaborative effort between the
Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and the Sharon Wick School of
Engineering at the University of Iowa . 97% of the components came from John Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft , Iowa. It took a combined 13,029 hours (6.26 years) of set-up, alignment, calibration, and tuning before filming this video, It is now on display in the Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University. Will go to Smithsonian.
@graphicdesign80212 Thank you for remembering that for me! I got this in a forwarded email and thought to myself "hey, I've seen that before!" but I couldn't remember the name of it or the DVD collection it was on.
fascinating.. Although it must surely be by clever artists - where are all the little "stones / potatoes / whatever" that cause the percussion to occur?
That's amazing!

It took over 200 and some odd people to complete this and it also took over 61/2 years to complete. Simply amazing.

i'm too tired to get if people are trolling or actually can't tell that this i cg. if you think this is an actual real instrument you are an idiot.

Awesome!, now we can set these things up and have concerts without musicians!

@JamesAffiliates
Yeah, who the hell needs musicians. All that spontaneity, and the surprise that comes with it can really get in the way of perfection. ;-)
Oh, and this is obviously computer generated. But I still liked the video.

Not only an amazing instrument but the thought behind it, timing and knowledge of music is as amazing as the instrument itself.

@homeinbrevard ....Except this is an animation, not a real instrument.
