I think you are splitting hairs here. The idea was not so much worshiping the picture but the idea of Christ Himself. If you listen to what the kid said, then you will realize he was dying for being a Christian - not for worshiping a picture.

Perhaps using the picture helped the filmmakers make a point to the audience. I myself consider all pictures of Christ unauthentic and silly. But I would not mock people for using them either.

Since you like to point out what happened in the film....the little boy looks up to Heaven (not the picture) and says "Jesus you died for me...I will die for you". He did not say " I will die for a picture of Jesus".

I.e. Burning a flag isn't an act of opposition against its colors or shape, but rather against the state.

If you put ANY of the apostles in the same position, they'd happily step on the picture because THEY would know that it's just an image. What counts is what you BELIEVE, not the symbols of belief. If you die for a symbol, you die a fool's death.

Remember Magritte's famous painting: Ceci n'est pas une pipe..meaning the image representing something is not its substance.
