WTVF is a great television station. Newschannel 5 does an exceptional job promoting Nashville and especially CBS. The NewsChannel 5 Network serves as a wonderful model for local television stations that seek survival in the midst of broadcast televison decline. The future of local broadcast television is in public access and public affairs-oriented programming.
WSMV is a great station as well. WSMV would be more competitive if the station would strengthen it's morning news team. Another thing, I dont understand why WKRN stays in the whole? Do you?
@applesauce2100 Channel 2 has been in third place for decades, even when the station was WNGE-TV (then owned by Nashville General Electric.) Do you actually think a new owner could reverse the Channel 2 fortunes? The station is hardly consistent in keeping a news team, the graphics are all over the place, music package stinks, the logo is fitting -- though not competitive with Chs. 4 & 5. What can be done?
@TV5Alive I know WKRN/Channel 2 has been in third place for years. WTVF is top notch hands down. WSMV sucks donkey dong, but WKRN could better itself, and in past ratings it has placed second in the morning news before in the early 2000s. I do think if a new owner came in and made some big changes it could compete with 4&5, I've read stories where a new owner with deep pockets invested in the station, the brand, the talent, and went from third to first. It can happened
@applesauce2100 You just need some really good owners who willing to invest, but with the state of broadcasting owners, u have to ask yourself do they have the money. They have a few consistent talent, Anne Holt, Bob Muller, Davis Nolan, Lisa Patton, Neil Orne, that good. Better resources, and with the internet your station has to be all over the web, mobile phone and more. Young Broadcasting can't keep KRON-4 in San Fran running, and they've own KRN since 1989 it time for them to blow!
@applesauce2100 I don't know if I necessarily agree with you Sauce that a station has to be all over the web, mobile phone and more. Example: KSDK Channel 5 in St. Louis, over a decade ago, had huge ratings for total viewers sign-on/sign-off, not to mention huge ratings for it's then respectable news product and news team. When Newschannel 5 started "converging" its news product with wireless media/internet and diverting a way from its "cut and dry" format, the station suffered.
@TV5Alive well in 2000 life was different in television, but the internet has litterally change the way we live, and so on...all tv stations will tell you that with the web the audience can get a variety of news, sports, other features and tv stations can make money off the ads..hey when a television station/owner making money that what they want. the web has not suffered ratings for the station, there 5 million cable channels, 3 or 4 station competiting at the same time, 24cable news and more
@applesauce2100 Truth. However, while the web is becoming a money making source, broadcast audiences and revenue is declining. Will the internet become the new broadcast television of the future? All media seems to be migrating to the net.
@TV5Alive Yes, the internet will be the new broadcasting format, because they're looking for ways to cut production in all areas of television. however I don't agree with it, but internet sites crash, and who knows, but it seems that yes everything is moving to the net, and it can be profitable as well too... Who knows what going to happened?
@applesauce2100 The internet isn't all bad. After all, it gives browsers the opportunity to look at the way television broadcasting used to be. It is nice to go retro and look at how simple life was for the viewer back then. Even so, how it was really hard work to work in broadcasting before the rise of the digital age. Yet, the days of hard work in broadcasting are returning as more, and more mass communication/journalism graduates are having to shoot & edit their own stories and other duties.
@applesauce2100 For some media companies, investing financial resources into new media/wireless/internet is not a wise choice in cultivating a station's product. As far as talent is concerned, Channel 2 has long-standing anchors, but how well are they percieved by the Middle Tennessee viewing audience? How well are Channel 2's veteran anchors trusted among Middle Tennessee viewers? Why and why not after all these years? About WSMV sucking donkey doo, Channel 4's overall product is better now...
@TV5Alive um any business in this day in age needs to have a website, and not just a website but a facebook/twitter account, because as a business you need to capture your audience...most tv stations branch out into mobile, social networkin and other networks, because you have to promote your brand to other avenues...most media outlets are going there and that just apart of the every changing business model...
@applesauce2100 There are contradicting reports concerning strength, decline, and stability of the national economy. At this point, there is a very minimal chance that a corporation would be willing to take a chance on purchasing a low-performing television station. The dreaded possibility is for a station like WKRN-TV become a duopoly with another station, or managed under a service agreement. Also...
@TV5Alive well WKRN is owned by Young but managed by Gray Television, but I've heard there some owners who want them, because Young can't get their act together... I hate duopolies and I hope for the life that wouldn't happened, but we have seen that LOCAL LLC TV have bought up tv stations, but now if the owners are not investing into an operation most stations are puttin more news out but with less resources, and less staff, because the business model is changing and it all starts at the top
@applesauce2100 What would you suggest Channel 2 do to develop a standout brand? On branding, Channel 4 emphasizes the "rural" aspect of the Middle TN market with an edgy/flashy slant. Channel 5 emphasizes the "metropolitan" aspect of the Middle TN market with a patriotic/technological slant. The "bold/big city" branding hasn't been working ever since WKRN went from Channel 2 News to News 2 almost twenty years ago. 4 & 5 have soaked up the Middle TN atmosphere where audience appeal is concerned
@TV5Alive covering rural area is not branding.. If Channel 4 covers rurual and Channel 5 covers the metro that means both operations are covering different areas of town. Channel 2 should focus on Murfressboro/Ruthf'd county other counties. Channel 4 News, NewsChannel 5 the their brand the NEWS 2 brand should be dump called 2 NEWS NOW, but they would would cover all the days news, but their product would have to stand out when in your in third place
@applesauce2100 2 NEWS NOW just may work. Placing more emphasis on covering the other larger Middle TN cities like Clarksville, Columbia, Murfreesboro, etc. sounds like a very valid and promising strategy, especially since those particular cities cannot and do have local affilliates to cover their immediate communities. The 2 NEWS NOW mandate would have to be paired with a hyper-aggressive product to distinguish WKRN. The lesser prob: finding unique graphics that are different from the present.
@TV5Alive my version of 2 NEWS NOW would focus on the days latest news of the day, the 4pm should focus on health, consumer news, internet stories, world stories, covering counties, the 5pm local news of the day, business news, package stories from local reporters, the 6pm news carry local news, county by county, spot news, investigation news, what good going on in the community and more and the 10pm would be a run down of all stories, all new stories and covering nation, mid south and more
@applesauce2100 There is nothing different in your layout than what WSMV and WTVF are doing. You will have to come up with something better than that one.
@TV5Alive I'm sure all 4 stations do the samething, but in most markets you can't be stale or you can't do what the competition is doing, but in my opinion WTVF is number 1 and their operation speaks volumes, and they will always lead the way. I find WSMV boring, stale. WKRN seems to do a solid coverage of the days news, but has been stuck at #3. However mgmt needs to find a way to remove that bad shadow, but Young in shambles and don't know where Gray TV's head at and WKRN not in HD which sucks
@applesauce2100 WTVF is # 1 because the station capitalized on the value-added combination offered to its viewers in the form of serious local news coverage& public affairs programming brilliantly execute at the right time through broadcast, radio, cable & internet/wireless. Other stations in the market didn't scan the market for such an opportunity. WSMV is not boring. NBC's daytime programing is boring. WSMV has improved in the last two years. Sauce, you are just a fan of patriotic colors lol
@TV5Alive well i've never been a fan of duoplies and I hope for the sake of WKRN it doesn't go down this route, because you need healthly competition, but when your in third place u need to stand out, and with Young/Gray TV the money tight on investing in your operation, but the station does good coverage of doing news, but many station now a day are unable to afford to keep a large staff and they're doing more news with less resources and it start from the top and trickel down to the bottom
@applesauce2100 Enhancing branding may not be the best option that may lead to local dominance of presence and/or a boost in advertising revenue. Sticking with a well-developed marketing plan that strategically targets the Middle Tennessee audience who expects an alternative from what Channels 4 and Channel 5 delivery is the task that Channel 2 has to aggressively determine.
@TV5Alive again any tv mgmt personel will tell u stickin with a strong branding counts, because you need to promote your brand, and yes you have a well developed marketing plan and in your plan you will have your brand, because your brand part of the product that stands out to your audience, but also your coverage of your newscast, but your newscast also has to stand out from the competition and when your in third place you have to make yourself look different from number 1 or 2 in the market
@applesauce2100 Yes, Channel 2 has long-standing anchors, but why are those WKRN anchors and personalities not among the most trusted by Middle Tennessee viewers? Nonetheless, Channel 4 is a much better station today than it was at least two years ago. The over all product of WSMV is great. Ch. 4 has differentiated its on-air presentation from Ch.5. Other than the absences of the late Dan Miller, the station is still extremely competitive; Newschannel 5 has slightly cooled for some reason.
@TV5Alive Channel 2 has long standing anchors, but the one thing you need are anchors who are stable...there are stations where you see the anchors on friday and comes Monday a new set of anchors, and when you rotate anchors, you can't hold your audience...the viewers are fickel and they like people that stay around, yes the station in 3rd, but I'm sure they know those two faces who've been there for a long time...Anne Holt, Bob Muller been together for a long time.
@applesauce2100 I think the reason why broadcast television newsrooms are hurting is because television stations are constantly chasing "news" that really isn't news. I am not a fan of backpack journalism. The traditional video photographer/reporter team could work well if news directors would send those teams after meaningful & not sensationalized stories. Competition w/ cable has made many broadcast markets lose sight of what it means to inform the public (local), not inform society (national)
@TV5Alive I'm neither a fan of VJ(video journalism or one man bands whatever the term people want to call them, but owners will say we need to cut cost. I think when you cover news you just dont cover all the crimes of the day, when your a local news operation you need to cover all local news, counties news, different local things that going on in your community. Also different packages need to be produce by a local station...viewers get tired of all the bad news u need to give em good news
@applesauce2100 i was once told by a manager is " if we gave good news people wouldn't watch." I don't agree with that because you should have a balance of news not just the same everyday stories of murders, recks, crime and more. Yes I do miss the good ole journalism of news, but in this day in time mgmt in all local/24 hrs cable shops go with what making news at the moment and right now. there could be another story happenin' somewhere else but they're not covering it..too much on celebs news
@applesauce2100 The general manager/news director probably told you that because he was only concerned about young demographics. In the rural areas, viewers want to know what crimes/outrageous stories are going on in their area because it makes for good gossip/watercooler talk. In the rural areas, people do not have much else to do but watch tv or be outside. Different story in the metro areas: people watch television to catch the latest government scandal
@TV5Alive Well this particular station was #1 in that market, but they did have an older demo, but however there are viewers who get sick in tired of the new because they hate to hear all the negative stories, but as I've said you need to have balance of good & bad...
@applesauce2100 One more observation Sauce, the trend of shedding aged talent, whether at the anchor desk or in the field, is stablizing. The larger markets: particularly LA, CHI are holding on to the vets now. Station management in such cities are recognizing the value of stability in trusted faces equals to stability in ratings.
@TV5Alive Yes, trusted faces equals stability and the face of station, but however many top vets in many cities have been cut because they make alot of money. It sad but true with Chicago, LA cutting million dollar anchors, and many having to take paycuts and furloughs. They want young because they're cheap to pay.. the business model is changing because the internet, cable tv, DVR and more. I myself like the older trusted vs cheap young talent, because they dont bring any substance
@applesauce2100 Also, in metro areas, a station using cheap graphics equals to low ratings. Metro viewers probably view WKRN as a "Mickey Mouse" station. Channel 2 does need a newset -- the current is about twenty years old? Anyway, viewers get tired of hearing about what celebrity is having a baby, what star is going to jail for two hours, or who got caught sniffing Lamisil. The consciousness of journalism has suffered a major concussion that happened somewhere in the early to mid 90s.
@TV5Alive Well many would say that graphics don't equal ratings, a nice graphic package is part of the cosmetic make-up just like a new set, because many third/fourth place station have nice graphics/set, but don't mean beans! As for WKRN needing a new set well yeah they should..the newsroom set is soo 90s and something state of the art would be nice. I also wouldnt call WKRN a micky mouse station, because Mickey owns ABC and their O&O stations which has money to spend and all of them are #1
@applesauce2100 Cosmetics count. Viewers get tired of see old stuff after a while, especially in large to mid-sized markets. WMC-TV in Memphis used to be the top station in the market. When station management neglected to keep up the station's "cosmetics" (as had been done for years prior), rating begin to slip. The station's nearest competitor (WREG) slid into first place. WMC-TV finally beautified itself, at least some. Nothing too innovative though, but at least management woke up.
@TV5Alive Having an ugly set doesn't break the ratings bank, because I've seen many of #1 rated station with the most ugliest set ever, and they've continued to soar. It cost alot of money to build those sets and the more elaborate you go the more it will cost. The owners have to spread the capital across all their other stations in the company chain. It good to have a nice set, believe me I like em, but they cost. In WMC vs WREG WREG soared because their product was better than WMC.
@applesauce2100 Costs of nice news sets do count and in some markets matter. If this wasn't the case, why have most markets invested into high-tech news sets? Interesting observation about WREG vs. WMC. Why do you think WMC's product deterior rated, say, over the last 20 years? Aside from making some set changes and anchor changes, what is different about WREG's product that WMC hasn't approached?
@TV5Alive the new sets are nice/pretty and yes you have to invest in your cosmetic, but again sets coast alot of money specially when stations budgets are being slash. KNBC had the same set from 1986-2001 and remodel for next few yrs untl a couple yrs ago they finally got an HD set. Why didn't NBC get KNBC invested into a new set? They probably didn't want to spend the money on a set, but I say yes get a new set, but dont break the bank. WREG moved to#1 and they had an ugly newsroom set
@applesauce2100 NBC had the money for KNBC's new set. At the time, the network was probably pundering which direction they wanted to take the station. Isn't KABC # 1 in LA? WREG's New Set. You are absolutely right...it was ugly and still is ugly. NC3 management adding the colors helps the news set/newsroom some, but why hasn't the station just invested into a new set. It's been 15 years already!! WREG moved to #1 because there were no other television news alternatives for Mid-Southerners.
@TV5Alive I like WREG, but that newsroom set has to go. Since NYTimes sold off all their stations to Local TV which is Tribune. They got WHNT, WTRK new HD sets so maybe WREG will be getting a new set, but the current set awful. WHBQ& WMC set much better than WREG. NBC had all that money they were making in the 90s off Friends, Seinfeld, ER they could upgraded that station, and KABC continues to be #1 in LA. do you think the mid-south audience like Jerry Tate & Pam McKelvy vs. WMC? I liked Pam
@applesauce2100 Jerry Tate was always an 2nd rate main anchor in Memphis. For whatever reason, I don't know. WREG and WHBQ were in second or third place during his tenures. Pam McKelvy was a pretty lady, but she lacked the star power that Mid-southerns expect from lead anchorwomen. It wasn't until Claudia Barr paired with Richard Ransom that WREGNewschannel 3's evening news casts started to win first place in the ratings. Ransom and Barr didn't have perfect chemistry at first, but it is settling
@TV5Alive Claudia look like she is handling them everything they wanted from her on Channel 3. She seem like she stuck it out for 13, because she was committed, but she pushing that rating needle up, because she's a true star, and she doing the damn thing on NewsChannel 3/WREG. However there is April Nelson/Markova Reed look like rising stars. Pam seem to be in her own little world, but I think she on the radio now so maybe she doing what right for her.
@applesauce2100 What station is Pam on the radio? 13 didn't want to pay Claudia what she was worth, so she said bye-bye. I don't blame her. For some reason, at the time, 13 couldn't get out of the number 3 spot when she were there. I think NC3 is much more serious operation. Claudia fit because she is an old school television journalist. April Thompson would have been a good choice for main anchor, but she probably didn't want to change her schedule and the added responsibility. Markova Reed...
@TV5Alive Well when FOX bought 13 I would think they were putting more money into the station and their anchors pocket. 13 seem to do better as a FOX station than being affiliated with ABC. I'm surprise, because FOX has Murdoch's deep pockets to dig in for all that $. I hope Mearl Purvis is getting a nice check, and their news director Ken Jobe seems to be solid in their news product. I also hope tha Claudia getting a nice check from 3 as well with different owners NY Times & Local TV
@applesauce2100 Ken Jobe is an excellent news director, part of the reason 13 is popular among younger/urban Memphian with news. Yes, 13 has done considerably better as a FOX affiliate than as an ABC station. The station's ability to acquire quality syndicated programming. Mearl got the last laugh on TV5 -- the way they did her. Mearl is happy to be on TV and getting a check!
@TV5Alive The only thing I didn't like about Jobe was; he was the news director at CBS Detroit, and the station was just starting out in the news game, granted it was a duoploy with WKBD Ch. 50 but next thing they shut the news operation down. Yes both stations were owned by CBS, but CBS knew what it was doing when WJBK was going to FOX and they had to buy WWJ 62/CBS. Ken Jobe has really carved a path out for FOX13. So Steve Dawson retired? Darrell & Mearl seem like they have chemistry together
@applesauce2100 I never understood why CBS didn't try to purchase beforehand those affilliates that had become FOX O&Os. It doesn't matter now, because CBS is back in first place after15-20 years off being in last place? WWJ is not taken seriously in the Detroit market because of the station being a UHF. Same problem with WPTY, KDNL, and WGCL (or whatever the call leters are these days.) It probably was nothing Jobe could do for WWJ.
@TV5Alive Well it was smart of CBS being affiliated with WGCL because it had a news department, but WKBD was FOX 50 before it went to WJBK, but WKBD had a news department and they could of build on and created a news dept. ABC HATES KDNL, because Shitclair the owners are another trainwreck company, that needs to be expose for the ugly devices as a company. That one company that will always have cookie cutter stations just like Nexstar and others.
@applesauce2100 I never understood why CBS didn't try to purchase Channel 20 in Detroit? Lower dial position. Speaking of Sincrap, as they are called lol, WICU/WICS in Central Illinois is run better than KDNL in St. Louis. ABC should have worked hard to purchase KPLR from acme/tribune. KPLR as an ABC affiliate would have given KSDK some serious competition, as KMOV seems scared to step into dominance. And Nextar...lol could they not do any worse than WMBD?
@TV5Alive Nexstar should could have their own reality show called "The Next Shit", because this company makes things up as they go. For St. Louis it would behoove ABC to buy KPLR and I never could have understand that one. KMOV has the best news operation in that market. KSDK even though it #1, but Gannett done fk'd up their company big time. KMOV need to step their game up. I think Nexstar messed every station up in the company chain.
@applesauce2100 Doesn't Nexstar own WIFR and WCIA as well. Both those stations, have great presentations. WIFR could stand to hire some ethnic minorities. KSDK is a sad case. What Gannett has done with it and other stations. Channel 5 will never be the same. KMOV is using cheap graphics, cheap set, but has the talent. Who da hell is running it?
@TV5Alive WIFR is a Gray Tv Station, but WCIA is a nextstar, and I think they win in the market hands down in ratings. Gannett has litterally butcher all their station except KARE-11 but I thought Belo invested into KMOV. I like Vicki Newton on KMOV at one time she was about to get Monica' job at WSB
@applesauce2100 I had heard that about Vicki in line for getting Monica's job, but Monica told everybody that she was gonna stay a little longer (money.) lol Going back to your market analysis, I don't think St. Louians value Vicki like she was valued in Southern market Atlanta. The staff at KARE-11 threatened to walk if Gannett messed up what was worked hard to establish. WCIA is on top because it's the only VHF in the market, and at one time, was the only station in the market that was decent
@TV5Alive yeah because she left WDIV and went to WSB to do morning news and Monica been talking about leaving, but mgmt always said whatever makes Monica happy they will do, because her IQ ratings is so high 35 yrs later. Next thing Vicki was headed to St. Louis and that was like wow, but Jovita seems to be ready to take over for Monica. KARE-11 worked really hard, so I guess they were able to keep something, but I wish the folks at 11ALIVE could of said that
@applesauce2100 Jovita is okay, not really ready yet to take over the lead anchor woman position at WSB, in my opinion. Something is missing. Monica is the most popular news anchor in ATL. She can't leave that! lol 11ALIVE (ATL) had a lot of potential until Gannett started altering the stations product for the sake of HD readiness. The station is really dull; doesn't help Brenda and Ted in what they are trying to do.
@TV5Alive I thought Jovita was ok a few years ago, but she coming around. If Jacquitta had been Monica's replacement that be another story, but Monica said Jovita will be the one to take over when she retires. WXIA was the first to go HD and that sent a message to WSB but I know some Gannett stations like to do warm/fuzzy stories but the station moving into WATL old building is a mess, because I like their old building, and those graphics brings down the product, and Brenda/Ted are good 2gether
@applesauce2100 but their messing something on 11ALIVE, it not the same when they promoted her with alot of fan fare, and in the mid 90s 11ALIVE was hot and they brought in alot of WAGA talent over to WXIA, but the Gannett should not be sleeping on 11ALIVE, because their product good, but that awful graphic package cheapen all their stations. they need to go back to the drawing board on the graphic package
@applesauce2100 Amen on Gannett going back to individual graphics packages for its stations. WEWS (Scripps) however has improved with company owned graphics.
@TV5Alive the scripps is better than Gannett, but it a little too flashy for some of their stations, but that Gannett package is too cheap specially for KPNX in Phoenix and that the leader in the market
@TV5Alive I know 11ALIVE & WUSA had giant oct and both were very polished, but Gannett doing inhouse graphics, and they are sooo cheap! Im like many in-house graphics can look nice, because WDIV had some nice in house done like 5 yrs ago, and really nice. I shake my damn head at Gannett, because I always place them as a top company
@applesauce2100 WLS is the station in Chi-town. I wonder if it is because they were the first station in Chicago, the Oprah factor, news talent, ABC or all these factors. WLS has been #1 for years. I am fan of the Hathus Graphics for WLS7 as well. I am glad KTVU never uses the FOX mandate as part of their on-air identity. Q13 in Seattle too.
@TV5Alive Yeah they've always been the leader, and 13 was NBC always #2, but when it became ABC outlet, just beefed up the operation, good people, news director, ABC/Disney running the station gave the station a better product. WKYC u know when Gannett was renewing contracts, Tim White left or paycut, so Romona solo at 6/11 and have another team on 7pm news
@applesauce2100 How are the ratings fairing with Romona anchoring solo? You know she had been touted as a well repected journalist with much fanfare by WKYC3.
@applesauce2100 Well, I love Monica, I do. But Monica realized when she started balding that it was an uh-uh moment and that she'd better get some young girl in place before they would all leave WSB. Jovita was a standout at WMC. It is no suprise she went to Atlanta and did so at the right time. Jacquitta can do her own thing at CBS 46. But she better give it her best. lol
@TV5Alive I love me some Monica too, and there time where she reading the telepromoter and get a little confuse, and that happens, but your right time to get a new young girl in there, and your right about Jacquitta, and when she left WSB she went to do a theatre plays, and radio and was having fun with herself, and Monica said Jacquitta "having fun" and she ready to have fun too. Seems like alot of stars start in Memphis and make that move to Atlanta
@applesauce2100 lol I noticed that Monica is getting confuse at times reading the telepromter lately. Can you see her still trying to do the news for 5 more years. lol She knows it time. But hey, now days, folks are having to work longer for SSI. Stars moving from Memphis to Atlanta was the old days. In the last ten years, those who passed through Memphis haven't been flashy enough to grace the ATL airwaves.
@TV5Alive Monica will be 65 years old in 2012, so by then she still has all her faculties in order, but she been ready to move on. she even said she would like to teacher, but I think her and husband #4 just going to take it easy and relax. Her portfolio is going to be nice, because Cox still has pension & 401K so that money will be coming in.
@TV5Alive LOL i know that the on going story about her new husband that he beat his ex wife and the ex-wife went on WGCL giving her story. What shocked everybody was when she change her last name from Kaufman to Pearson and she said when she resigned that contract she said if she couldn't be Pearson on camera she would leave so of course they let her have Pearson, but Amanda Davis doesnt go by Amanda Bevell on FOX 5 but I guess she really wanted his name but Monica would let a man hit her
@applesauce2100 What? Monica doesn't look like she is no punk. She probably would give brutha a serious back-alley, ghetto homestyle fried-kickin butt whippin' if he ever went to slap her. You know, sometimes these women start these provocations, then they want to give an exclusive, leaving out the bad they did to contribute to the domestic dispute. lol I am sure Tom Randles didn't start it with his wife. You know he supposedly shanked his wife to the ground when he lived in Hampton Roads.
@applesauce2100 He left because the incident was all over the news. He disappeared for a minute (not sure what he was up to) then all of a sudden, he is working at WSMV. Honestly, I think he is a great hire--smart move by Channel 4. I would have left too. I wonder did he leave her there...lol. Monica has those rough "grandmother" hands that burn on contact. Take the skin off your face. lol
@TV5Alive I thought that why he left, and WTKR u know that station was in cellar, so I thought his wife getting beat made him leave but It would have behoove 4 for him to take Dan Miller job because that Bob Sellars he seems like a bore.Ohh u aint right talking about Monica's hands One thing I have notice is that in some pictures in screen shoots sometime the lighting makes her look too dark or too light, and when she out in the studio she looks brown or chocolate i chalk it up to the lights
@applesauce2100 Monica is just a sista, that is all there is too it. I don't care where put her in front or behind the camera, in the light or in the dark. Atlantans identify with her because she kept it real and worked hard. Dan Miller's replacement was a touchy situation to fix. Viewers in Middle Tennessee loved him and Demetria had been pretty much tied to his hip. I thought that WSMV would have brought back Jeff McAtee. Bob just doesn't feel right for the job...
@applesauce2100 Sadly, Nashville isn't ready for lead Black male anchor. It is okay for a brotha to be a weatherman. I was thinking Lelan Statom was being groomed to take Ron Howes place when he should retire, but seems like Charlie Neese will get that spot. Ron Howes still looks like he did back in the 70s. Amazing! LOL
@applesauce2100 Jobe was able to carve a path out for FOX 13 because of his experience with the Memphis market (WMC). Steve Dawson left out with little fanfare, unlike Jerry Tate's retirement -- which was basically 3 celebrating it and inviting the public to view. Haven't gotten a chance to see Mearl's new "on-screen" husband and the chemistry between them. He is from the Mid-South, so he already knows... lol.
@TV5Alive Steve Dawson seem to be that newsman, but it never had that drive to make viewers happy. In ATL he was kind of boring when he was on Channel 46, but not sure how Memphis respond to him? Jerry Tate been on two stations in Memphis, so of course 3 was going to pimp him as much, because 3 being so hard up to beat WMC-TV. If they could, the probably show old Elvis Prestly videos & more on WREG for the almightly ratings points. Darrell Green worked in FOX in News Orleans & WFTV before Fox 13
@applesauce2100 While on the air in Memphis, Steve Dawson was a little more relaxed and went with the flow of things. The biggest thing at WHBQ, that Steve had done was his on-going series of "Memphis Most Wanted" features in conjuction with the MPD. As far as Elvis clips, WMC is all over that one. lol Yes, Darrell is experience with the FOX stations, a corp. group hire from "in-house."
@applesauce2100 After she walked out on 13,Claudia told listeners on the radio that "they haven't heard the last from her!" A year later, Claudia was sitting next to Richard Ransom at the anchor desk, w/ that pony-tail down her back, head tilted back like she was reporting the news straight out of Orange Mound. The needle on the Nielson meter went to 20 share!!!! Thirteen scrambled to find a replacement; marketing Mearl 's return to TV as a "comeback" was the only way to stay in the game. lol
@TV5Alive That is sooooo funny, but also a very dramatic story, but very interesting. I know that she was the face of 13 for a long time. But Claudia Barr is a true class act you can tell she's very classy, but how old is Ms. Barr? That what 3 wanted was to out paced 5, and 3 try to get Joe Birch over there, but he very loyal to 5. 3 should be winning 10pm news with CBS lead-ins from CSI etc. Is Claudia making big $ at 3, and is Mearl making money at 13? I hope so
@applesauce2100 Claudia is doing pretty good with the pay at NC3. They are paying her more than 13. She is worth it. lol Mearl is doing good at 13. At first they were making her work for it. lol But she is doing pretty good at 13. Not what Claudia is making at 3, but it is good to be on contract. lol Yes, Claudia is very classy. Mearl is very fabulous, a lot similar to Donna in style and presentation. Then too, Mearl and Claudia have similar sounds in their voices with how the tell the news.
@TV5Alive Well glad both ladies are making that money, because they work hard and though Memphis is a market 48 they should be making 100K over a little over. I know the bigger market you work in the more money, but I've read some anchors in mid to smaller can make over 100K, but that depends on your IQ ratings with the audience, and of course owners, and other factors. the new female that replace Donna I wonder how much she got a bump in pay, because Donna was making money at WMC
@applesauce2100 Trust me, Mearl and Claudia are making over 500K. Donna was making about that or over. Memphis is now #48? Wow, I though N.O. was shrinking.
@TV5Alive You lying! Oh them two stars are making big bucks! I'm not mad at them. That good, because I heard and not sure if this is true, but Monica making between1 Million-1.5Million and in 2005-06 Brenda was making 800K, so I hope she making 1 Mil too
@applesauce2100 You didn't know Brenda is already making a Mil a year. Google it. I don't know if it has been raised or lowered, but Mrs. Woods has been making at least a Mil on contract with Gannett for some years now. Monica is milking WSB for all it is worth. It is hard to walk away from an over a million dollar a year job. Why you think Oprah cried?
@applesauce2100 Markova would have been a good main anchor. She is stylish and definitely has good news delivery. Not sure if she would have wanted to be as connected in the Mid-South community. To be a main anchor in a mid-sized market, you have to get out of the seat and get into the community, becoming involved. The glamour has to be flashed in the community, not just in front of the camera. lol
@TV5Alive Markova is very stylish, and she has star power,.Pam was on morning show for 98.9FM, but don't know if it last. I know Jim Larkins had a blog this was over 5 yrs ago talking about who would be the main female anchor on WREG
@applesauce2100 Markova is very stylish. Probably will make a great lead anchor if she ever left 3. Not sure about Pam, again she is beautiful but to conservative and monotone in her news delivery. Speaking of Joe, wonder what he is up to these days? He used to make fun of Mary Beth Connley when they anchored together. She got the last laugh. lol
@TV5Alive Markova is very stylish, and a rising star. Now she was one who mgmt at 3 was looking at for Pam's primetime job, but since 3 morning news ratings were so good they didn't want to move her off. Maybe she could be Claudia's replacement if Ms. Barr was to leave 3, but I hope not. Markova could go to Charlotte, or Houston some other southern city and do it big there. Joe Larkins had a blog and talked about all the stuff at 3 but that was 05/06 and Mary Beth still there with Alex Coleman
@applesauce2100 When Pam McKelvy was on maternity leave at NC3, I remember rolling through Memphis and seeing a bus stop ad promoting Jerry Tate & Pam. No, it was Markova Reed! They look so much a like, even down to the hairstyles, I thought they were sisters. At that time, I thought she would become the top anchorwoman at the station. Mary Beth is good and fits with hosting Live at 9. She got tired of Joe talking about her clothes and calling her "Moesha." Donna should do fill-ins for Mary Beth
@TV5Alive WREG seems to offer more features on their product, and WMC's product seem stale and boring until Peggy Philips was the news director she seem to have spiced things up at WMC-TV and they've had serveral prominent female anchors on WMC. Brenda Wood,Kim Hindrew, Mearl Purvis,Kim Hindrew, Donna Davis. WREG products seems to offer more while WMC was the same old status quo, but WMC been top dog for years, and WHBQ & WPTY have picked up the scraps
@applesauce2100 Peggy Phillip ran Action News 5 almost into the ground. People complained about the tablodistic news approach WMC had started promoting under the legendary Bill Applegate. Under the WMC-TV behind the scenes dream team, the station image suffered and the newsroom was walking on nails. Shifting to anchorwomen: Donna got canned because she was too expensive. Mearl got canned because Hindrew was the "queen" of the station. Brenda got sick of the Memphis mentality. Part two...
@TV5Alive Brenda Wood is a class act "believe me" when I tell you when she left WAGA both WSB &WXIA fought to get her. in 1997 Monica called Brenda up and told her she would be perfect fit. Brenda would do the 5pm/Monica would do 6/11 in 2000 Monica would retire and Brenda would get the 6/11. WXIA told Brenda she would be the face of the station. However at that time Angela Robinson who was locally raised in ATL and left DC. I heard the news director & Angela Robinson was at odds.
@applesauce2100 so Angela Robinson was in the hot seat, because Brenda wasn't too thrill with WAGA becoming a FOX affiliate and then becoming an O&O and in '97 Fox NewsChannel was laying the ground work, and it bother her that FOX news wasn't an established news network like the big 3. It was reported that Angela would move to 5pm & Brenda@ 6/11 but in the long run Angela left and Brenda was the main anchor starting Sept 1997 station fought WAGA for second place that when NBC was good
@applesauce2100 Yes, Brenda has that "Dick Hawley" influenced news delivery and she definitely fits well with the NBC presence better than with CBS/Fox. What did you say: Monica called up Brenda in 1997 and told her to come to WSB? First, that was really benevolent of Monica. Second, I understand that Brenda probably didn't want to be second. However, she would have fit wonderfully as WSB-TV's lead female anchor, given that Monica really would have retired. Brenda went with the $1M.
@TV5Alive Yup! I have the article were it stated that Monica would call Brenda up and put on the love you love you charm. Monica stated that she always told WSB mgmt that she thought Brenda would be perfect fit at WSB. Your right Brenda didn't want to be second banana, but the article went on how WSB always ways snag WAGA &WXIA talent over to WSB because they have deep pockets full of $. Also at that time Monica was anchoring 5,6,&11pm news and she said by summer she wanted off the 5pm.
@applesauce2100 Wow! Didn't know Monica was trying to woo Brenda over to WSB. In hindsight, Brenda should have moved to Action News. Perhaps at that time, maybe Cox wasn't willing to pay Brenda $1M or maybe Brenda was still traumatized by what WAGA had done to her, when the lured her there. Could have been that Brenda didn't want any last minute changes once she got to TV2. Nonetheless, she would have fit perfectly there with her WMC-TV experience.
@TV5Alive well the reports was that she could make up to Monica paygrade and it was reported that Monica making $500K and Brenda could make up to that. COX was willing to pay her, but in the article it stated how would she feel just anchoring a 5pm and on the sideline for 3yrs until the anchor throne was ready, and Brenda said Monica/John/Don Farmer (justin's dad) do well and she was set to go over to WSB, but WXIA swooped in and told her she could be the face while another black female was lead
@applesauce2100 Made sense. Money talks...lol. Brenda worked her way up to main anchor (WMC) and had to settle for less at WAGA. I still say she would have done well at WSB, given that Monica retired. Monica would do well as a community affairs director or something. She has put her years in and reached excellence in her market. I am a fan of Don Farmer and John Pruitt. Don was much more fun to watch though. WXIA still need some work.
@TV5Alive Well I read that Brenda was making 200K in 1990s, so dont know how much she had to settle less at WAGA, but I think she enjoyed it, but when it became a FOX station, she wasn't feeling it, and they wanted her to stay, but she left. Amanda Davis got the job, and Amanda wanted the job back in 1988, but it went to Brenda. Monica always talks about teaching after retirement, and then she said back in April she would like to do voiceovers. Monica's portfolio looking nice & setting pretty
@applesauce2100 Monica is a hard worker -- she loves what she does. This why she is holding on so long. It gets tiring, but when you love what you -- you keep it up until you breakdown. Monica is lasting as long as she has because she got to WSB/Atlanta and worked!!!! And no, light skin didn't help her. Brenda is classy. She also got in and worked. She moved to ATL to excel. Now, Brenda Wood and Claudia Barr have similar news deliveries styles. Claudia stayed in Memphis and made her money.
@TV5Alive Monica & Brenda are hard worker bees, and Monica has done so much at WSB & Brenda done alot at both stations too. Monica said once she got into the community people got to know her, and not just see her as somebody on television. Monica she great a telling stories and etc. Brenda the same goes for her, and both women are true professionals. I see Jovita Moore & Jacquitta Williams the next Monica & Brenda for the next generation.
@applesauce2100 Brenda and Monica (or Monica & Brenda) are from the old school. Once their gone, those [type] tv news/journalist/divas will never grace the airwaves again -- no matter what direction convergence sends broadcasting. Jovita and Jacquitta should try to make a name for themselves and not imitate those before them. When Demetria K. is gone, there will not be another like her. Appreciate the veterans now, because the new crops are just shew-ins to keep the news departments running.
@TV5Alive That is for sure! Monica, Brenda are old school, and once all the old school vets leave, the new generation will never be able to compare or command what they want. To many media companies are looking at profits first, but many cookie cutter television are suffering in content because of mandated set, graphics music packages and the list goes on. Nowadays the females can have big tits, and be a complete airhead, the male anchor can have jock attitude with good looks, but no substance.
@applesauce2100 Hey, you want big titts and jock straps tune to KTLA. lol Journalism is a bunch of gossip these days. One reason is because there is no "gatekeeping" anymore. Another thing, (close cousin) too many damn channels and everybody wants to talk. Talking too much. lol
@TV5Alive KTLA, WSVN, any LA or Miami they want all that, but where does good ole fashion television come into play. No market really does it, ok maybe some. WFAA I guess is only a few stations that has the old school tv news of yester year, but you right too many damn channels, because cable continues to grow.
@applesauce2100 WKRC is a great example of a TV station that values experienced old school journalist in the industry today. WWL to a certain degree. I can't think of many stations that do so. lol
@TV5Alive WKRC I loved them, but I was so upset when they became a CBS affiliate and WCPO left CBS for ABC, because of their parent company. WKRC has always had a good stance on news. Of course George Clooney dad used to be the lead anchor back in the day. WWL it like the old guard, and continues and command the highest ratings in all their news. Belo loves WWL, because I know it rakes in alot of money. There also WXYZ, WFAA, WSB, (5 years ago WEWS, but not in 2010)
@applesauce2100 WXYZ has been slipping big time. Even a visit from Bill Bonds hasn't sustained them. Local 4 is kicking butt. lol WFAA is tops in Dallas. WWL is strong but WVUE is out for blood! Local 12 is one of the best CBS affiliates in the country. Personally, I think CBS does better with Channel 12. If Ch.12 holds on to it's veteran anchors it will stay well ahead of Chs. 5 & 9. Also, WRAL is a top notch CBS station, riviling WTVF in model, or should I say WTVF was patterned after WRAL.
@TV5Alive WXYZ was holding it down being #1 at 5,6, but when the Grace retired they past program Director Marla Durtz and next thing you know she working at Local 4 and under Marla Local 4 now beating XYZ in all local news, they said XYZ wins noon news, but morning news is a tight battle with FOX2, XYZ, DIV. Scripps Howard is losing ground with WEWS, WXYZ and both bring in the cheddar chesse for profits. I really thought 12 did well with ABC, Kit Andrews anchors 12,4,5 on KRC
@applesauce2100 WCPO product not too bad for a mid size market. WLWT is a lost cause, and FOX 19 picking up alot of steam in Cincy. WFAA is battling KTVT for 10pm spot, but place third in morning battle. WRAL always wins hands down, but WRAL reminds me of WBNS. WVUE is out for blood, because it was a lacky FOX station, but picked up alot of speed and WDSU should watch out
@applesauce2100 Yes, you are absolutely right. I see the similarity between WRAL and 10TV. WFAA is suffering from talent replacement. WDSU should watch out? WDSU is already in 3rd place. Even Mason Granger couldn't save that station.
@TV5Alive What did Mason Granger do for WDSU? WDSU has 4pm news, 5,6,10 alot of news on 6. Wow WDSU what going to happen with them? Hearst seems to invest in all their stations, but WVUE FOX is locally owned and good for them. 10TV is locally owned so they have money because of the paper/rdio/tv
@applesauce2100 Mason Granger didn't do squat-piss for WDSU because WWL is waaaay tooo strong. He bailed and took his wife with him, for 6 was nothing like the "riverboat." 10TV being part of paper/radio/tv is the reason behind WBNS' success. If previous owners of KSDK would have kept the station in "newspaper" roots, well... WVUE being locally owned is why WWL is on guard. lol
@TV5Alive yea 10TV continues to rake in the big ratings, and did u hear the latest news about 10tv? WKRC news director is moving to 10TV later in the month. The family has always played an important role, but i always thought their news was boring that because i grew up watchin that station, but they get tops because it's still owned by the same company since 1949, and only a few stations can say that
@applesauce2100 Yes few stations can say they have been owned by the same company since it's inception. Yes, I heard about the new news director for WBNS coming from WKRC. This is good because he had done well holding up Local 12 and WBNS should look for nothing less.
@TV5Alive Yes 10TV holding on with Andrea/Jerry/Chris Bradley (oh he off the hook) so I don't except nothing bad over there at BNS. Donna could host a show on cable television and she would be the star of it all. I can see her moving into that, or even moving on to CNN or Headline News, but she would be perfect on CNN
@applesauce2100 I see Donna doing celebrity, but she is not serious enough for major news at CNN. Chris Bradley, I am gonna have to see what he is about. Andrea Jerry make a wonderful team. Jerry is one of the Black male anchors that survived...lol right?
@applesauce2100 Jerry has been there for a long time, which is a rarity for a Black anchorman, in his case, given that Columbus isn't half or predominantly Black concentrated. Other long standing Black male anchors: Art Holiday at KSDK5. Alex Coleman at WREG3. Dave Burchell and John Lomax at Local 12. Don Roberts at WAVY10. God! Robert Jordan has been at WGN9 forever. Andrea is eye-catching, and has a really nice personality. I can see why she has longevity at WBNS 10.
@TV5Alive Don't forget Huel Pekins in Detroit at FOX2, Rob Daniels & Stan Stovall at WBAL, Vic Carter & Kai Jackson at WJZ in B-More, Leon Bibb at WEWS, and in Atlanta there Fred Blakenship at WSB who a rising star having to anchor with Monica, and Mark Hayes at WAGA formally of WXYZ, Calvin Hughes now Local 10 in Miami,
@applesauce2100 I thought Fred Blankship anchored in the mornings at WSB? Yes, I forget about Huel & Stan (Karen Foss' ex-tv news husbands.) Quite a few brothas doing it in tv news, not too many young black men doing it in local tv news though.
@TV5Alive Fred does morning/noon, but during the summertime he and John Bachman would fill in for John Pruitt and anchor with Monica. Yes the older generation, but new generation of brotha are a dime of dozen, because of the pay and they are not feeling the backlash, so are welcome in some markets, and others don't want, it just depends on the market, and some markets are starting to be excepting too.. THere Barron James Local 10 in Miami, don't know where Ric Young went his last stop WTVR
@TV5Alive Vic Carter long held down the job, but moved to B-more at WJZ for lead anchor job. Warren Savage held it down for 10yrs, but quit working and next thing he had mug shots, and had a drug problem. Then Collins Spencer from Headline News, and after 18mo they canned him, don't know why. He solid, a little boring, but I thought he was good. Then Fred was hired from KGTV
@applesauce2100 Kit is easing towards the door (retirement) lol. Anytime a main anchor goes for the noon show, you know they are heading out. I am not sure exactly what WXYZ is doing, but I know WEWS needs a strong main male anchor. What do you think?
@TV5Alive Yes they do, Jack Marschall would have been an excellent choice for Ted Henry job. Jack worked at WUAB with Romona Robinson ,but he and Danita would do great on together. XYZ & EWS need some new blood
@applesauce2100 Hey, where is Ramona? Is she still with WKYC? Why has her role diminished? I find it strange that she is the only Black on the air at WKYC. I thought Cleveland was past that. lol
@TV5Alive Romona on WKYC 6/11pm news she a solo act on 3. You know what I thought the same thing, even in the 80s she was the only black face in primetime, and WEWS had Lorna Barrett into primetime in the 1990s, and now 3 has Romona/
5 Danita Harris/8 Stacey Bell/19Sharron Reed(ghetto) Wayne Dawson on FOX 8 Morning News, but I thought the same thing about Cleveland as well too
@applesauce2100 Is Wayne Dawson the Black guy that wears a lot of make up? Hey, what happened that Wilma Smith left 5 for 8 in the early 90s? I would mistake her for Linda Evans. I've got to check out this Sharron Reed to see what's up with sista. lol
@TV5Alive Yes he does wear alot of make-up and he on the morning news on FOX 8, and there a youtube clip where he anchor with Donna when she was in Cleveland. Wilma does look like Linda Evans, but not sure what went down with her leaving 5 for 8 in 1994, could of been money but I'm find out what went down. Sharron Reed got into a fight with anotha sista at NBC10 in Philly and next thing you know she was in Cleveland. Then she did a story about art and she was naked and then ended up on Letterman
@applesauce2100 Nothing wrong with the make-up, just noticed. lol Sharon seems audacious. She must have connections. lol Doesn't seem to mind putting a bad reputation out there, for she can always get a job.
@TV5Alive but i thought the same thing about the make -up too, because it thick like butter on his face, but Sharon has a good agent, and I heard that she dated Donovan McNabb when she was in Philly too, but that was back in the day
@TV5Alive U know Peggy has a reputation with her at NBC Kansas City, Miami, Memphis. There was always a story about Ms. Peggy, but didn't she carry WMC #1 status on her back. I always heard how she brag about being #1. I know Raycom got Bill Applegate to WOIO-CBS19 and brough that in your face style to Cleveland and with CBS lead-ins helped CBS 19 11pm news beating WEWS/WJW/WKYC. in 1988 I know Brenda move to ATL @WAGA. Kim took Brenda's job but came back. Mearl seem to work well with Joe Burch
@applesauce2100 they wanted a lightskinned woman well there was Brenda and Kim, so they didn't want a chocolate girl like Mearl, but she seems like a down to earth woman. Joe Burch seems to have a lot of women next to him LOL but Kim Hindrew seems nice but she was the "queen" Didn't she married Mason Granger? Also what about Jane Segal who was on the weekend news and moved to midday news? She seem to have gotten the shaft? Wouldn't she have been Brenda's first choice replacement and Kym Clark?
@applesauce2100 If you get a chance, watch Mearl's poise, posture and delivery. Her own air presences rivals Donna Davis. We both know how she was popular, inspite of deteriorating ratings during her era. Besides Mearl, isn't strange how all the female anchors at WMC usually do 5-8 year stints and then leave. Watchout Ursela. Yes, Kim married Mason Granger (lucky lady). How do you think she was able to leave and come back? Jane Segal wasn't main anchor material. Kym Clark is good, but skin color
@TV5Alive Mearl & Claudia are top notch ladies, but tell me what you thoughts Donna Davis, Pam McKevely and going back to Pam Crittendon on 3 in the 80s/90? Also what was the deal with Jane Segal? She seem to be poised and I've seen the old youtube clips? WMC has people who been there along time..Janice Broach that an old dog who been around.
@applesauce2100 Donna Davis got lucky and got the position at WMC. When she had come on the seen, Mrs. Davis definitely had star power and was eye-catching (tall and glamorous). Peggy and Applegate snagged her, spoiled her. When that mgmt. left, the economy hit and glory days were over. Donna costed too much money, but would do well in a market like Atlanta, if she can get in. Pam was a premadonna. Her demands and arrogance lead to her release, which turned out to be a good thing for Channel 3.
@TV5Alive Donna Davis I like her ,but to me she seem to have a diva personality, and I'm sure Applegate/Peggy/Raycom Media gave her the the moon & the stars but couldn't they just cut her pay instead of cutting her deep in her back. It was sad becaue it was Christmas time, and she was a fan favorite Not sure about the replacemen on the anchor desk, but the audience does move on with time. I can see Donna in ATL. Pam McKevly was another premdonna? Who did she piss off?
@applesauce2100 Pam McKelvy had a child and wanted to just anchor in the early evenings at WREG. Jennifer Van Vrancken wanted to anchor at ten with Richard Ransom. When station management declined both request, Jen split and Pam said bye, bye. As far as I know, Pam is raising her child. Jen is at WVUE New Orleans. So this his how Claudia Barr eased into the main anchor woman seat at WREG. Donna is a diva. She was a high stakes gamble for TV5. Somebody was gonna lose in the end.
@TV5Alive Donna is a star, and she could do a hosting job or something, but them women in ATL don't leave unless their ready. One thing about ATL the vets in that market are there. Monica, Brenda, Amanda Davis, Karyn Greer, Jill Becker, John Pruitt, plus weather & sports anchors. Yes slowly some fresh faces are popping up. However Donna, with her Diva personality she need to tone the make-up and weave down... she still got it going on, but tone it down mama...
@applesauce2100 Donna is a star, she never really came off as a "newswoman." Show hosting/presenter is definitely her -- after all, Oprah saw it. lol! The make-up and flashiness is Donna. If she would tone it down, she wouldn't be as eye-catching. Yes, it goes with the charisma. ATL is a showcase city. African-American women there are looked at as stars. White men are respected there (and in every other market) because it is the standard for the industry.
TV5Alive 2 years ago 2
Yes, sir. That's what makes NewsChannel 5 The best known station in Nashville! (WSMV in 2nd place, and FOX 17 in 3rd)
kennyjohnson92 2 years ago
WSMV is a great station as well. WSMV would be more competitive if the station would strengthen it's morning news team. Another thing, I dont understand why WKRN stays in the whole? Do you?
TV5Alive 2 years ago
@TV5Alive The owners (Young Broadcasting)
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Channel 2 has been in third place for decades, even when the station was WNGE-TV (then owned by Nashville General Electric.) Do you actually think a new owner could reverse the Channel 2 fortunes? The station is hardly consistent in keeping a news team, the graphics are all over the place, music package stinks, the logo is fitting -- though not competitive with Chs. 4 & 5. What can be done?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive I know WKRN/Channel 2 has been in third place for years. WTVF is top notch hands down. WSMV sucks donkey dong, but WKRN could better itself, and in past ratings it has placed second in the morning news before in the early 2000s. I do think if a new owner came in and made some big changes it could compete with 4&5, I've read stories where a new owner with deep pockets invested in the station, the brand, the talent, and went from third to first. It can happened
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 You just need some really good owners who willing to invest, but with the state of broadcasting owners, u have to ask yourself do they have the money. They have a few consistent talent, Anne Holt, Bob Muller, Davis Nolan, Lisa Patton, Neil Orne, that good. Better resources, and with the internet your station has to be all over the web, mobile phone and more. Young Broadcasting can't keep KRON-4 in San Fran running, and they've own KRN since 1989 it time for them to blow!
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I don't know if I necessarily agree with you Sauce that a station has to be all over the web, mobile phone and more. Example: KSDK Channel 5 in St. Louis, over a decade ago, had huge ratings for total viewers sign-on/sign-off, not to mention huge ratings for it's then respectable news product and news team. When Newschannel 5 started "converging" its news product with wireless media/internet and diverting a way from its "cut and dry" format, the station suffered.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive well in 2000 life was different in television, but the internet has litterally change the way we live, and so on...all tv stations will tell you that with the web the audience can get a variety of news, sports, other features and tv stations can make money off the ads..hey when a television station/owner making money that what they want. the web has not suffered ratings for the station, there 5 million cable channels, 3 or 4 station competiting at the same time, 24cable news and more
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Truth. However, while the web is becoming a money making source, broadcast audiences and revenue is declining. Will the internet become the new broadcast television of the future? All media seems to be migrating to the net.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Yes, the internet will be the new broadcasting format, because they're looking for ways to cut production in all areas of television. however I don't agree with it, but internet sites crash, and who knows, but it seems that yes everything is moving to the net, and it can be profitable as well too... Who knows what going to happened?
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 The internet isn't all bad. After all, it gives browsers the opportunity to look at the way television broadcasting used to be. It is nice to go retro and look at how simple life was for the viewer back then. Even so, how it was really hard work to work in broadcasting before the rise of the digital age. Yet, the days of hard work in broadcasting are returning as more, and more mass communication/journalism graduates are having to shoot & edit their own stories and other duties.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 For some media companies, investing financial resources into new media/wireless/internet is not a wise choice in cultivating a station's product. As far as talent is concerned, Channel 2 has long-standing anchors, but how well are they percieved by the Middle Tennessee viewing audience? How well are Channel 2's veteran anchors trusted among Middle Tennessee viewers? Why and why not after all these years? About WSMV sucking donkey doo, Channel 4's overall product is better now...
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive um any business in this day in age needs to have a website, and not just a website but a facebook/twitter account, because as a business you need to capture your audience...most tv stations branch out into mobile, social networkin and other networks, because you have to promote your brand to other avenues...most media outlets are going there and that just apart of the every changing business model...
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 There are contradicting reports concerning strength, decline, and stability of the national economy. At this point, there is a very minimal chance that a corporation would be willing to take a chance on purchasing a low-performing television station. The dreaded possibility is for a station like WKRN-TV become a duopoly with another station, or managed under a service agreement. Also...
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive well WKRN is owned by Young but managed by Gray Television, but I've heard there some owners who want them, because Young can't get their act together... I hate duopolies and I hope for the life that wouldn't happened, but we have seen that LOCAL LLC TV have bought up tv stations, but now if the owners are not investing into an operation most stations are puttin more news out but with less resources, and less staff, because the business model is changing and it all starts at the top
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 What would you suggest Channel 2 do to develop a standout brand? On branding, Channel 4 emphasizes the "rural" aspect of the Middle TN market with an edgy/flashy slant. Channel 5 emphasizes the "metropolitan" aspect of the Middle TN market with a patriotic/technological slant. The "bold/big city" branding hasn't been working ever since WKRN went from Channel 2 News to News 2 almost twenty years ago. 4 & 5 have soaked up the Middle TN atmosphere where audience appeal is concerned
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive covering rural area is not branding.. If Channel 4 covers rurual and Channel 5 covers the metro that means both operations are covering different areas of town. Channel 2 should focus on Murfressboro/Ruthf'd county other counties. Channel 4 News, NewsChannel 5 the their brand the NEWS 2 brand should be dump called 2 NEWS NOW, but they would would cover all the days news, but their product would have to stand out when in your in third place
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 2 NEWS NOW just may work. Placing more emphasis on covering the other larger Middle TN cities like Clarksville, Columbia, Murfreesboro, etc. sounds like a very valid and promising strategy, especially since those particular cities cannot and do have local affilliates to cover their immediate communities. The 2 NEWS NOW mandate would have to be paired with a hyper-aggressive product to distinguish WKRN. The lesser prob: finding unique graphics that are different from the present.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive my version of 2 NEWS NOW would focus on the days latest news of the day, the 4pm should focus on health, consumer news, internet stories, world stories, covering counties, the 5pm local news of the day, business news, package stories from local reporters, the 6pm news carry local news, county by county, spot news, investigation news, what good going on in the community and more and the 10pm would be a run down of all stories, all new stories and covering nation, mid south and more
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 There is nothing different in your layout than what WSMV and WTVF are doing. You will have to come up with something better than that one.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive I'm sure all 4 stations do the samething, but in most markets you can't be stale or you can't do what the competition is doing, but in my opinion WTVF is number 1 and their operation speaks volumes, and they will always lead the way. I find WSMV boring, stale. WKRN seems to do a solid coverage of the days news, but has been stuck at #3. However mgmt needs to find a way to remove that bad shadow, but Young in shambles and don't know where Gray TV's head at and WKRN not in HD which sucks
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 WTVF is # 1 because the station capitalized on the value-added combination offered to its viewers in the form of serious local news coverage& public affairs programming brilliantly execute at the right time through broadcast, radio, cable & internet/wireless. Other stations in the market didn't scan the market for such an opportunity. WSMV is not boring. NBC's daytime programing is boring. WSMV has improved in the last two years. Sauce, you are just a fan of patriotic colors lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive well i've never been a fan of duoplies and I hope for the sake of WKRN it doesn't go down this route, because you need healthly competition, but when your in third place u need to stand out, and with Young/Gray TV the money tight on investing in your operation, but the station does good coverage of doing news, but many station now a day are unable to afford to keep a large staff and they're doing more news with less resources and it start from the top and trickel down to the bottom
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Enhancing branding may not be the best option that may lead to local dominance of presence and/or a boost in advertising revenue. Sticking with a well-developed marketing plan that strategically targets the Middle Tennessee audience who expects an alternative from what Channels 4 and Channel 5 delivery is the task that Channel 2 has to aggressively determine.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive again any tv mgmt personel will tell u stickin with a strong branding counts, because you need to promote your brand, and yes you have a well developed marketing plan and in your plan you will have your brand, because your brand part of the product that stands out to your audience, but also your coverage of your newscast, but your newscast also has to stand out from the competition and when your in third place you have to make yourself look different from number 1 or 2 in the market
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Yes, Channel 2 has long-standing anchors, but why are those WKRN anchors and personalities not among the most trusted by Middle Tennessee viewers? Nonetheless, Channel 4 is a much better station today than it was at least two years ago. The over all product of WSMV is great. Ch. 4 has differentiated its on-air presentation from Ch.5. Other than the absences of the late Dan Miller, the station is still extremely competitive; Newschannel 5 has slightly cooled for some reason.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Channel 2 has long standing anchors, but the one thing you need are anchors who are stable...there are stations where you see the anchors on friday and comes Monday a new set of anchors, and when you rotate anchors, you can't hold your audience...the viewers are fickel and they like people that stay around, yes the station in 3rd, but I'm sure they know those two faces who've been there for a long time...Anne Holt, Bob Muller been together for a long time.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I think the reason why broadcast television newsrooms are hurting is because television stations are constantly chasing "news" that really isn't news. I am not a fan of backpack journalism. The traditional video photographer/reporter team could work well if news directors would send those teams after meaningful & not sensationalized stories. Competition w/ cable has made many broadcast markets lose sight of what it means to inform the public (local), not inform society (national)
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive I'm neither a fan of VJ(video journalism or one man bands whatever the term people want to call them, but owners will say we need to cut cost. I think when you cover news you just dont cover all the crimes of the day, when your a local news operation you need to cover all local news, counties news, different local things that going on in your community. Also different packages need to be produce by a local station...viewers get tired of all the bad news u need to give em good news
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 i was once told by a manager is " if we gave good news people wouldn't watch." I don't agree with that because you should have a balance of news not just the same everyday stories of murders, recks, crime and more. Yes I do miss the good ole journalism of news, but in this day in time mgmt in all local/24 hrs cable shops go with what making news at the moment and right now. there could be another story happenin' somewhere else but they're not covering it..too much on celebs news
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 The general manager/news director probably told you that because he was only concerned about young demographics. In the rural areas, viewers want to know what crimes/outrageous stories are going on in their area because it makes for good gossip/watercooler talk. In the rural areas, people do not have much else to do but watch tv or be outside. Different story in the metro areas: people watch television to catch the latest government scandal
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Well this particular station was #1 in that market, but they did have an older demo, but however there are viewers who get sick in tired of the new because they hate to hear all the negative stories, but as I've said you need to have balance of good & bad...
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 One more observation Sauce, the trend of shedding aged talent, whether at the anchor desk or in the field, is stablizing. The larger markets: particularly LA, CHI are holding on to the vets now. Station management in such cities are recognizing the value of stability in trusted faces equals to stability in ratings.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Yes, trusted faces equals stability and the face of station, but however many top vets in many cities have been cut because they make alot of money. It sad but true with Chicago, LA cutting million dollar anchors, and many having to take paycuts and furloughs. They want young because they're cheap to pay.. the business model is changing because the internet, cable tv, DVR and more. I myself like the older trusted vs cheap young talent, because they dont bring any substance
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Also, in metro areas, a station using cheap graphics equals to low ratings. Metro viewers probably view WKRN as a "Mickey Mouse" station. Channel 2 does need a newset -- the current is about twenty years old? Anyway, viewers get tired of hearing about what celebrity is having a baby, what star is going to jail for two hours, or who got caught sniffing Lamisil. The consciousness of journalism has suffered a major concussion that happened somewhere in the early to mid 90s.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Well many would say that graphics don't equal ratings, a nice graphic package is part of the cosmetic make-up just like a new set, because many third/fourth place station have nice graphics/set, but don't mean beans! As for WKRN needing a new set well yeah they should..the newsroom set is soo 90s and something state of the art would be nice. I also wouldnt call WKRN a micky mouse station, because Mickey owns ABC and their O&O stations which has money to spend and all of them are #1
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Cosmetics count. Viewers get tired of see old stuff after a while, especially in large to mid-sized markets. WMC-TV in Memphis used to be the top station in the market. When station management neglected to keep up the station's "cosmetics" (as had been done for years prior), rating begin to slip. The station's nearest competitor (WREG) slid into first place. WMC-TV finally beautified itself, at least some. Nothing too innovative though, but at least management woke up.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Having an ugly set doesn't break the ratings bank, because I've seen many of #1 rated station with the most ugliest set ever, and they've continued to soar. It cost alot of money to build those sets and the more elaborate you go the more it will cost. The owners have to spread the capital across all their other stations in the company chain. It good to have a nice set, believe me I like em, but they cost. In WMC vs WREG WREG soared because their product was better than WMC.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Costs of nice news sets do count and in some markets matter. If this wasn't the case, why have most markets invested into high-tech news sets? Interesting observation about WREG vs. WMC. Why do you think WMC's product deterior rated, say, over the last 20 years? Aside from making some set changes and anchor changes, what is different about WREG's product that WMC hasn't approached?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive the new sets are nice/pretty and yes you have to invest in your cosmetic, but again sets coast alot of money specially when stations budgets are being slash. KNBC had the same set from 1986-2001 and remodel for next few yrs untl a couple yrs ago they finally got an HD set. Why didn't NBC get KNBC invested into a new set? They probably didn't want to spend the money on a set, but I say yes get a new set, but dont break the bank. WREG moved to#1 and they had an ugly newsroom set
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 NBC had the money for KNBC's new set. At the time, the network was probably pundering which direction they wanted to take the station. Isn't KABC # 1 in LA? WREG's New Set. You are absolutely right...it was ugly and still is ugly. NC3 management adding the colors helps the news set/newsroom some, but why hasn't the station just invested into a new set. It's been 15 years already!! WREG moved to #1 because there were no other television news alternatives for Mid-Southerners.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive I like WREG, but that newsroom set has to go. Since NYTimes sold off all their stations to Local TV which is Tribune. They got WHNT, WTRK new HD sets so maybe WREG will be getting a new set, but the current set awful. WHBQ& WMC set much better than WREG. NBC had all that money they were making in the 90s off Friends, Seinfeld, ER they could upgraded that station, and KABC continues to be #1 in LA. do you think the mid-south audience like Jerry Tate & Pam McKelvy vs. WMC? I liked Pam
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Jerry Tate was always an 2nd rate main anchor in Memphis. For whatever reason, I don't know. WREG and WHBQ were in second or third place during his tenures. Pam McKelvy was a pretty lady, but she lacked the star power that Mid-southerns expect from lead anchorwomen. It wasn't until Claudia Barr paired with Richard Ransom that WREGNewschannel 3's evening news casts started to win first place in the ratings. Ransom and Barr didn't have perfect chemistry at first, but it is settling
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Claudia look like she is handling them everything they wanted from her on Channel 3. She seem like she stuck it out for 13, because she was committed, but she pushing that rating needle up, because she's a true star, and she doing the damn thing on NewsChannel 3/WREG. However there is April Nelson/Markova Reed look like rising stars. Pam seem to be in her own little world, but I think she on the radio now so maybe she doing what right for her.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 What station is Pam on the radio? 13 didn't want to pay Claudia what she was worth, so she said bye-bye. I don't blame her. For some reason, at the time, 13 couldn't get out of the number 3 spot when she were there. I think NC3 is much more serious operation. Claudia fit because she is an old school television journalist. April Thompson would have been a good choice for main anchor, but she probably didn't want to change her schedule and the added responsibility. Markova Reed...
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Well when FOX bought 13 I would think they were putting more money into the station and their anchors pocket. 13 seem to do better as a FOX station than being affiliated with ABC. I'm surprise, because FOX has Murdoch's deep pockets to dig in for all that $. I hope Mearl Purvis is getting a nice check, and their news director Ken Jobe seems to be solid in their news product. I also hope tha Claudia getting a nice check from 3 as well with different owners NY Times & Local TV
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Ken Jobe is an excellent news director, part of the reason 13 is popular among younger/urban Memphian with news. Yes, 13 has done considerably better as a FOX affiliate than as an ABC station. The station's ability to acquire quality syndicated programming. Mearl got the last laugh on TV5 -- the way they did her. Mearl is happy to be on TV and getting a check!
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive The only thing I didn't like about Jobe was; he was the news director at CBS Detroit, and the station was just starting out in the news game, granted it was a duoploy with WKBD Ch. 50 but next thing they shut the news operation down. Yes both stations were owned by CBS, but CBS knew what it was doing when WJBK was going to FOX and they had to buy WWJ 62/CBS. Ken Jobe has really carved a path out for FOX13. So Steve Dawson retired? Darrell & Mearl seem like they have chemistry together
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I never understood why CBS didn't try to purchase beforehand those affilliates that had become FOX O&Os. It doesn't matter now, because CBS is back in first place after15-20 years off being in last place? WWJ is not taken seriously in the Detroit market because of the station being a UHF. Same problem with WPTY, KDNL, and WGCL (or whatever the call leters are these days.) It probably was nothing Jobe could do for WWJ.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Well it was smart of CBS being affiliated with WGCL because it had a news department, but WKBD was FOX 50 before it went to WJBK, but WKBD had a news department and they could of build on and created a news dept. ABC HATES KDNL, because Shitclair the owners are another trainwreck company, that needs to be expose for the ugly devices as a company. That one company that will always have cookie cutter stations just like Nexstar and others.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I never understood why CBS didn't try to purchase Channel 20 in Detroit? Lower dial position. Speaking of Sincrap, as they are called lol, WICU/WICS in Central Illinois is run better than KDNL in St. Louis. ABC should have worked hard to purchase KPLR from acme/tribune. KPLR as an ABC affiliate would have given KSDK some serious competition, as KMOV seems scared to step into dominance. And Nextar...lol could they not do any worse than WMBD?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Nexstar should could have their own reality show called "The Next Shit", because this company makes things up as they go. For St. Louis it would behoove ABC to buy KPLR and I never could have understand that one. KMOV has the best news operation in that market. KSDK even though it #1, but Gannett done fk'd up their company big time. KMOV need to step their game up. I think Nexstar messed every station up in the company chain.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Doesn't Nexstar own WIFR and WCIA as well. Both those stations, have great presentations. WIFR could stand to hire some ethnic minorities. KSDK is a sad case. What Gannett has done with it and other stations. Channel 5 will never be the same. KMOV is using cheap graphics, cheap set, but has the talent. Who da hell is running it?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive WIFR is a Gray Tv Station, but WCIA is a nextstar, and I think they win in the market hands down in ratings. Gannett has litterally butcher all their station except KARE-11 but I thought Belo invested into KMOV. I like Vicki Newton on KMOV at one time she was about to get Monica' job at WSB
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I had heard that about Vicki in line for getting Monica's job, but Monica told everybody that she was gonna stay a little longer (money.) lol Going back to your market analysis, I don't think St. Louians value Vicki like she was valued in Southern market Atlanta. The staff at KARE-11 threatened to walk if Gannett messed up what was worked hard to establish. WCIA is on top because it's the only VHF in the market, and at one time, was the only station in the market that was decent
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive yeah because she left WDIV and went to WSB to do morning news and Monica been talking about leaving, but mgmt always said whatever makes Monica happy they will do, because her IQ ratings is so high 35 yrs later. Next thing Vicki was headed to St. Louis and that was like wow, but Jovita seems to be ready to take over for Monica. KARE-11 worked really hard, so I guess they were able to keep something, but I wish the folks at 11ALIVE could of said that
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Jovita is okay, not really ready yet to take over the lead anchor woman position at WSB, in my opinion. Something is missing. Monica is the most popular news anchor in ATL. She can't leave that! lol 11ALIVE (ATL) had a lot of potential until Gannett started altering the stations product for the sake of HD readiness. The station is really dull; doesn't help Brenda and Ted in what they are trying to do.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive I thought Jovita was ok a few years ago, but she coming around. If Jacquitta had been Monica's replacement that be another story, but Monica said Jovita will be the one to take over when she retires. WXIA was the first to go HD and that sent a message to WSB but I know some Gannett stations like to do warm/fuzzy stories but the station moving into WATL old building is a mess, because I like their old building, and those graphics brings down the product, and Brenda/Ted are good 2gether
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 but their messing something on 11ALIVE, it not the same when they promoted her with alot of fan fare, and in the mid 90s 11ALIVE was hot and they brought in alot of WAGA talent over to WXIA, but the Gannett should not be sleeping on 11ALIVE, because their product good, but that awful graphic package cheapen all their stations. they need to go back to the drawing board on the graphic package
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Amen on Gannett going back to individual graphics packages for its stations. WEWS (Scripps) however has improved with company owned graphics.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive the scripps is better than Gannett, but it a little too flashy for some of their stations, but that Gannett package is too cheap specially for KPNX in Phoenix and that the leader in the market
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 For real. I wish that that KPNX and KSDK would go back to Hathus Graphics and the NBC New Millinneum package.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive I know 11ALIVE & WUSA had giant oct and both were very polished, but Gannett doing inhouse graphics, and they are sooo cheap! Im like many in-house graphics can look nice, because WDIV had some nice in house done like 5 yrs ago, and really nice. I shake my damn head at Gannett, because I always place them as a top company
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 The Giant Octopussy graphics were so damn dull. I was glad to see them go. I would rather have the current than GO. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Giant Oct was nice for some stations, but love WLS Hathus Graphics and KTVU

TV5Alive 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 WLS is the station in Chi-town. I wonder if it is because they were the first station in Chicago, the Oprah factor, news talent, ABC or all these factors. WLS has been #1 for years. I am fan of the Hathus Graphics for WLS7 as well. I am glad KTVU never uses the FOX mandate as part of their on-air identity. Q13 in Seattle too.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive WLS is simply the best station, and always win every show, ABC/Disney has the huge investment into all their shops.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Is WTVG13ABC in Toledo winning over WTOL11? Staying in Chicago, what is wrong with WBBM? Can that station ever find what works?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive It a battle with WTVG& WTOL...I think the morning news on WTVG beating WTOL, but WTOL wins all the other news, noon, 5,6,11
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 WTOL is a pretty tough station. How long has 11 been the ratings leader in Northwest OH? Back to WKYC, what is really going on there?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Yeah they've always been the leader, and 13 was NBC always #2, but when it became ABC outlet, just beefed up the operation, good people, news director, ABC/Disney running the station gave the station a better product. WKYC u know when Gannett was renewing contracts, Tim White left or paycut, so Romona solo at 6/11 and have another team on 7pm news
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 How are the ratings fairing with Romona anchoring solo? You know she had been touted as a well repected journalist with much fanfare by WKYC3.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Well, I love Monica, I do. But Monica realized when she started balding that it was an uh-uh moment and that she'd better get some young girl in place before they would all leave WSB. Jovita was a standout at WMC. It is no suprise she went to Atlanta and did so at the right time. Jacquitta can do her own thing at CBS 46. But she better give it her best. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive I love me some Monica too, and there time where she reading the telepromoter and get a little confuse, and that happens, but your right time to get a new young girl in there, and your right about Jacquitta, and when she left WSB she went to do a theatre plays, and radio and was having fun with herself, and Monica said Jacquitta "having fun" and she ready to have fun too. Seems like alot of stars start in Memphis and make that move to Atlanta
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 lol I noticed that Monica is getting confuse at times reading the telepromter lately. Can you see her still trying to do the news for 5 more years. lol She knows it time. But hey, now days, folks are having to work longer for SSI. Stars moving from Memphis to Atlanta was the old days. In the last ten years, those who passed through Memphis haven't been flashy enough to grace the ATL airwaves.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Monica will be 65 years old in 2012, so by then she still has all her faculties in order, but she been ready to move on. she even said she would like to teacher, but I think her and husband #4 just going to take it easy and relax. Her portfolio is going to be nice, because Cox still has pension & 401K so that money will be coming in.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I hope Monica teaches mass media when she retires. Is her current husband really a "wife beater?"
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive LOL i know that the on going story about her new husband that he beat his ex wife and the ex-wife went on WGCL giving her story. What shocked everybody was when she change her last name from Kaufman to Pearson and she said when she resigned that contract she said if she couldn't be Pearson on camera she would leave so of course they let her have Pearson, but Amanda Davis doesnt go by Amanda Bevell on FOX 5 but I guess she really wanted his name but Monica would let a man hit her
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 What? Monica doesn't look like she is no punk. She probably would give brutha a serious back-alley, ghetto homestyle fried-kickin butt whippin' if he ever went to slap her. You know, sometimes these women start these provocations, then they want to give an exclusive, leaving out the bad they did to contribute to the domestic dispute. lol I am sure Tom Randles didn't start it with his wife. You know he supposedly shanked his wife to the ground when he lived in Hampton Roads.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive No, she look like she aint having that up in the house, and that whole Tom Randles story, I wonder is that why he left Norfolk.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 He left because the incident was all over the news. He disappeared for a minute (not sure what he was up to) then all of a sudden, he is working at WSMV. Honestly, I think he is a great hire--smart move by Channel 4. I would have left too. I wonder did he leave her there...lol. Monica has those rough "grandmother" hands that burn on contact. Take the skin off your face. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive I thought that why he left, and WTKR u know that station was in cellar, so I thought his wife getting beat made him leave but It would have behoove 4 for him to take Dan Miller job because that Bob Sellars he seems like a bore.Ohh u aint right talking about Monica's hands One thing I have notice is that in some pictures in screen shoots sometime the lighting makes her look too dark or too light, and when she out in the studio she looks brown or chocolate i chalk it up to the lights
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Monica is just a sista, that is all there is too it. I don't care where put her in front or behind the camera, in the light or in the dark. Atlantans identify with her because she kept it real and worked hard. Dan Miller's replacement was a touchy situation to fix. Viewers in Middle Tennessee loved him and Demetria had been pretty much tied to his hip. I thought that WSMV would have brought back Jeff McAtee. Bob just doesn't feel right for the job...
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Sadly, Nashville isn't ready for lead Black male anchor. It is okay for a brotha to be a weatherman. I was thinking Lelan Statom was being groomed to take Ron Howes place when he should retire, but seems like Charlie Neese will get that spot. Ron Howes still looks like he did back in the 70s. Amazing! LOL
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Jobe was able to carve a path out for FOX 13 because of his experience with the Memphis market (WMC). Steve Dawson left out with little fanfare, unlike Jerry Tate's retirement -- which was basically 3 celebrating it and inviting the public to view. Haven't gotten a chance to see Mearl's new "on-screen" husband and the chemistry between them. He is from the Mid-South, so he already knows... lol.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Steve Dawson seem to be that newsman, but it never had that drive to make viewers happy. In ATL he was kind of boring when he was on Channel 46, but not sure how Memphis respond to him? Jerry Tate been on two stations in Memphis, so of course 3 was going to pimp him as much, because 3 being so hard up to beat WMC-TV. If they could, the probably show old Elvis Prestly videos & more on WREG for the almightly ratings points. Darrell Green worked in FOX in News Orleans & WFTV before Fox 13
applesauce2100 1 year ago

I hope so
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Claudia is doing pretty good with the pay at NC3. They are paying her more than 13. She is worth it. lol Mearl is doing good at 13. At first they were making her work for it. lol But she is doing pretty good at 13. Not what Claudia is making at 3, but it is good to be on contract. lol Yes, Claudia is very classy. Mearl is very fabulous, a lot similar to Donna in style and presentation. Then too, Mearl and Claudia have similar sounds in their voices with how the tell the news.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Well glad both ladies are making that money, because they work hard and though Memphis is a market 48 they should be making 100K over a little over. I know the bigger market you work in the more money, but I've read some anchors in mid to smaller can make over 100K, but that depends on your IQ ratings with the audience, and of course owners, and other factors. the new female that replace Donna I wonder how much she got a bump in pay, because Donna was making money at WMC
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Trust me, Mearl and Claudia are making over 500K. Donna was making about that or over. Memphis is now #48? Wow, I though N.O. was shrinking.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive You lying! Oh them two stars are making big bucks! I'm not mad at them. That good, because I heard and not sure if this is true, but Monica making between1 Million-1.5Million and in 2005-06 Brenda was making 800K, so I hope she making 1 Mil too
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 You didn't know Brenda is already making a Mil a year. Google it. I don't know if it has been raised or lowered, but Mrs. Woods has been making at least a Mil on contract with Gannett for some years now. Monica is milking WSB for all it is worth. It is hard to walk away from an over a million dollar a year job. Why you think Oprah cried?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Markova would have been a good main anchor. She is stylish and definitely has good news delivery. Not sure if she would have wanted to be as connected in the Mid-South community. To be a main anchor in a mid-sized market, you have to get out of the seat and get into the community, becoming involved. The glamour has to be flashed in the community, not just in front of the camera. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Markova is very stylish, and she has star power,.Pam was on morning show for 98.9FM, but don't know if it last. I know Jim Larkins had a blog this was over 5 yrs ago talking about who would be the main female anchor on WREG
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Markova is very stylish. Probably will make a great lead anchor if she ever left 3. Not sure about Pam, again she is beautiful but to conservative and monotone in her news delivery. Speaking of Joe, wonder what he is up to these days? He used to make fun of Mary Beth Connley when they anchored together. She got the last laugh. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Markova is very stylish, and a rising star. Now she was one who mgmt at 3 was looking at for Pam's primetime job, but since 3 morning news ratings were so good they didn't want to move her off. Maybe she could be Claudia's replacement if Ms. Barr was to leave 3, but I hope not. Markova could go to Charlotte, or Houston some other southern city and do it big there. Joe Larkins had a blog and talked about all the stuff at 3 but that was 05/06 and Mary Beth still there with Alex Coleman
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 When Pam McKelvy was on maternity leave at NC3, I remember rolling through Memphis and seeing a bus stop ad promoting Jerry Tate & Pam. No, it was Markova Reed! They look so much a like, even down to the hairstyles, I thought they were sisters. At that time, I thought she would become the top anchorwoman at the station. Mary Beth is good and fits with hosting Live at 9. She got tired of Joe talking about her clothes and calling her "Moesha." Donna should do fill-ins for Mary Beth
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive WREG seems to offer more features on their product, and WMC's product seem stale and boring until Peggy Philips was the news director she seem to have spiced things up at WMC-TV and they've had serveral prominent female anchors on WMC. Brenda Wood,Kim Hindrew, Mearl Purvis,Kim Hindrew, Donna Davis. WREG products seems to offer more while WMC was the same old status quo, but WMC been top dog for years, and WHBQ & WPTY have picked up the scraps
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Peggy Phillip ran Action News 5 almost into the ground. People complained about the tablodistic news approach WMC had started promoting under the legendary Bill Applegate. Under the WMC-TV behind the scenes dream team, the station image suffered and the newsroom was walking on nails. Shifting to anchorwomen: Donna got canned because she was too expensive. Mearl got canned because Hindrew was the "queen" of the station. Brenda got sick of the Memphis mentality. Part two...
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Brenda Wood is a class act "believe me" when I tell you when she left WAGA both WSB &WXIA fought to get her. in 1997 Monica called Brenda up and told her she would be perfect fit. Brenda would do the 5pm/Monica would do 6/11 in 2000 Monica would retire and Brenda would get the 6/11. WXIA told Brenda she would be the face of the station. However at that time Angela Robinson who was locally raised in ATL and left DC. I heard the news director & Angela Robinson was at odds.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 so Angela Robinson was in the hot seat, because Brenda wasn't too thrill with WAGA becoming a FOX affiliate and then becoming an O&O and in '97 Fox NewsChannel was laying the ground work, and it bother her that FOX news wasn't an established news network like the big 3. It was reported that Angela would move to 5pm & Brenda@ 6/11 but in the long run Angela left and Brenda was the main anchor starting Sept 1997 station fought WAGA for second place that when NBC was good
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Yes, Brenda has that "Dick Hawley" influenced news delivery and she definitely fits well with the NBC presence better than with CBS/Fox. What did you say: Monica called up Brenda in 1997 and told her to come to WSB? First, that was really benevolent of Monica. Second, I understand that Brenda probably didn't want to be second. However, she would have fit wonderfully as WSB-TV's lead female anchor, given that Monica really would have retired. Brenda went with the $1M.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Yup! I have the article were it stated that Monica would call Brenda up and put on the love you love you charm. Monica stated that she always told WSB mgmt that she thought Brenda would be perfect fit at WSB. Your right Brenda didn't want to be second banana, but the article went on how WSB always ways snag WAGA &WXIA talent over to WSB because they have deep pockets full of $. Also at that time Monica was anchoring 5,6,&11pm news and she said by summer she wanted off the 5pm.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Wow! Didn't know Monica was trying to woo Brenda over to WSB. In hindsight, Brenda should have moved to Action News. Perhaps at that time, maybe Cox wasn't willing to pay Brenda $1M or maybe Brenda was still traumatized by what WAGA had done to her, when the lured her there. Could have been that Brenda didn't want any last minute changes once she got to TV2. Nonetheless, she would have fit perfectly there with her WMC-TV experience.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive well the reports was that she could make up to Monica paygrade and it was reported that Monica making $500K and Brenda could make up to that. COX was willing to pay her, but in the article it stated how would she feel just anchoring a 5pm and on the sideline for 3yrs until the anchor throne was ready, and Brenda said Monica/John/Don Farmer (justin's dad) do well and she was set to go over to WSB, but WXIA swooped in and told her she could be the face while another black female was lead
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Made sense. Money talks...lol. Brenda worked her way up to main anchor (WMC) and had to settle for less at WAGA. I still say she would have done well at WSB, given that Monica retired. Monica would do well as a community affairs director or something. She has put her years in and reached excellence in her market. I am a fan of Don Farmer and John Pruitt. Don was much more fun to watch though. WXIA still need some work.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Well I read that Brenda was making 200K in 1990s, so dont know how much she had to settle less at WAGA, but I think she enjoyed it, but when it became a FOX station, she wasn't feeling it, and they wanted her to stay, but she left. Amanda Davis got the job, and Amanda wanted the job back in 1988, but it went to Brenda. Monica always talks about teaching after retirement, and then she said back in April she would like to do voiceovers. Monica's portfolio looking nice & setting pretty
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Monica is a hard worker -- she loves what she does. This why she is holding on so long. It gets tiring, but when you love what you -- you keep it up until you breakdown. Monica is lasting as long as she has because she got to WSB/Atlanta and worked!!!! And no, light skin didn't help her. Brenda is classy. She also got in and worked. She moved to ATL to excel. Now, Brenda Wood and Claudia Barr have similar news deliveries styles. Claudia stayed in Memphis and made her money.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Monica & Brenda are hard worker bees, and Monica has done so much at WSB & Brenda done alot at both stations too. Monica said once she got into the community people got to know her, and not just see her as somebody on television. Monica she great a telling stories and etc. Brenda the same goes for her, and both women are true professionals. I see Jovita Moore & Jacquitta Williams the next Monica & Brenda for the next generation.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Brenda and Monica (or Monica & Brenda) are from the old school. Once their gone, those [type] tv news/journalist/divas will never grace the airwaves again -- no matter what direction convergence sends broadcasting. Jovita and Jacquitta should try to make a name for themselves and not imitate those before them. When Demetria K. is gone, there will not be another like her. Appreciate the veterans now, because the new crops are just shew-ins to keep the news departments running.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive That is for sure! Monica, Brenda are old school, and once all the old school vets leave, the new generation will never be able to compare or command what they want. To many media companies are looking at profits first, but many cookie cutter television are suffering in content because of mandated set, graphics music packages and the list goes on. Nowadays the females can have big tits, and be a complete airhead, the male anchor can have jock attitude with good looks, but no substance.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Hey, you want big titts and jock straps tune to KTLA. lol Journalism is a bunch of gossip these days. One reason is because there is no "gatekeeping" anymore. Another thing, (close cousin) too many damn channels and everybody wants to talk. Talking too much. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive KTLA, WSVN, any LA or Miami they want all that, but where does good ole fashion television come into play. No market really does it, ok maybe some. WFAA I guess is only a few stations that has the old school tv news of yester year, but you right too many damn channels, because cable continues to grow.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 WKRC is a great example of a TV station that values experienced old school journalist in the industry today. WWL to a certain degree. I can't think of many stations that do so. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive WKRC I loved them, but I was so upset when they became a CBS affiliate and WCPO left CBS for ABC, because of their parent company. WKRC has always had a good stance on news. Of course George Clooney dad used to be the lead anchor back in the day. WWL it like the old guard, and continues and command the highest ratings in all their news. Belo loves WWL, because I know it rakes in alot of money. There also WXYZ, WFAA, WSB, (5 years ago WEWS, but not in 2010)
applesauce2100 1 year ago
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive WXYZ was holding it down being #1 at 5,6, but when the Grace retired they past program Director Marla Durtz and next thing you know she working at Local 4 and under Marla Local 4 now beating XYZ in all local news, they said XYZ wins noon news, but morning news is a tight battle with FOX2, XYZ, DIV. Scripps Howard is losing ground with WEWS, WXYZ and both bring in the cheddar chesse for profits. I really thought 12 did well with ABC, Kit Andrews anchors 12,4,5 on KRC
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 WCPO product not too bad for a mid size market. WLWT is a lost cause, and FOX 19 picking up alot of steam in Cincy. WFAA is battling KTVT for 10pm spot, but place third in morning battle. WRAL always wins hands down, but WRAL reminds me of WBNS. WVUE is out for blood, because it was a lacky FOX station, but picked up alot of speed and WDSU should watch out
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Yes, you are absolutely right. I see the similarity between WRAL and 10TV. WFAA is suffering from talent replacement. WDSU should watch out? WDSU is already in 3rd place. Even Mason Granger couldn't save that station.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive What did Mason Granger do for WDSU? WDSU has 4pm news, 5,6,10 alot of news on 6. Wow WDSU what going to happen with them? Hearst seems to invest in all their stations, but WVUE FOX is locally owned and good for them. 10TV is locally owned so they have money because of the paper/rdio/tv
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Mason Granger didn't do squat-piss for WDSU because WWL is waaaay tooo strong. He bailed and took his wife with him, for 6 was nothing like the "riverboat." 10TV being part of paper/radio/tv is the reason behind WBNS' success. If previous owners of KSDK would have kept the station in "newspaper" roots, well... WVUE being locally owned is why WWL is on guard. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive yea 10TV continues to rake in the big ratings, and did u hear the latest news about 10tv? WKRC news director is moving to 10TV later in the month. The family has always played an important role, but i always thought their news was boring that because i grew up watchin that station, but they get tops because it's still owned by the same company since 1949, and only a few stations can say that
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Yes few stations can say they have been owned by the same company since it's inception. Yes, I heard about the new news director for WBNS coming from WKRC. This is good because he had done well holding up Local 12 and WBNS should look for nothing less.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Yes 10TV holding on with Andrea/Jerry/Chris Bradley (oh he off the hook) so I don't except nothing bad over there at BNS. Donna could host a show on cable television and she would be the star of it all. I can see her moving into that, or even moving on to CNN or Headline News, but she would be perfect on CNN
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I see Donna doing celebrity, but she is not serious enough for major news at CNN. Chris Bradley, I am gonna have to see what he is about. Andrea Jerry make a wonderful team. Jerry is one of the Black male anchors that survived...lol right?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Jerry yes he a nice brotha, been at 10tv 30yrs now, and doing the damn thing. Andrea #1 female anchor been in the market 20yrs next yr.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Jerry has been there for a long time, which is a rarity for a Black anchorman, in his case, given that Columbus isn't half or predominantly Black concentrated. Other long standing Black male anchors: Art Holiday at KSDK5. Alex Coleman at WREG3. Dave Burchell and John Lomax at Local 12. Don Roberts at WAVY10. God! Robert Jordan has been at WGN9 forever. Andrea is eye-catching, and has a really nice personality. I can see why she has longevity at WBNS 10.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Don't forget Huel Pekins in Detroit at FOX2, Rob Daniels & Stan Stovall at WBAL, Vic Carter & Kai Jackson at WJZ in B-More, Leon Bibb at WEWS, and in Atlanta there Fred Blakenship at WSB who a rising star having to anchor with Monica, and Mark Hayes at WAGA formally of WXYZ, Calvin Hughes now Local 10 in Miami,
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I thought Fred Blankship anchored in the mornings at WSB? Yes, I forget about Huel & Stan (Karen Foss' ex-tv news husbands.) Quite a few brothas doing it in tv news, not too many young black men doing it in local tv news though.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Fred does morning/noon, but during the summertime he and John Bachman would fill in for John Pruitt and anchor with Monica. Yes the older generation, but new generation of brotha are a dime of dozen, because of the pay and they are not feeling the backlash, so are welcome in some markets, and others don't want, it just depends on the market, and some markets are starting to be excepting too.. THere Barron James Local 10 in Miami, don't know where Ric Young went his last stop WTVR
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 I have noticed that over the last ten years WSB hasn't been able to keep consistent morning talent. What's the scoop?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Vic Carter long held down the job, but moved to B-more at WJZ for lead anchor job. Warren Savage held it down for 10yrs, but quit working and next thing he had mug shots, and had a drug problem. Then Collins Spencer from Headline News, and after 18mo they canned him, don't know why. He solid, a little boring, but I thought he was good. Then Fred was hired from KGTV
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Collin Spencer looked like he had a stroke. Warren Savage on drugs...how did it happen?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Kit is easing towards the door (retirement) lol. Anytime a main anchor goes for the noon show, you know they are heading out. I am not sure exactly what WXYZ is doing, but I know WEWS needs a strong main male anchor. What do you think?
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Yes they do, Jack Marschall would have been an excellent choice for Ted Henry job. Jack worked at WUAB with Romona Robinson ,but he and Danita would do great on together. XYZ & EWS need some new blood
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Hey, where is Ramona? Is she still with WKYC? Why has her role diminished? I find it strange that she is the only Black on the air at WKYC. I thought Cleveland was past that. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Romona on WKYC 6/11pm news she a solo act on 3. You know what I thought the same thing, even in the 80s she was the only black face in primetime, and WEWS had Lorna Barrett into primetime in the 1990s, and now 3 has Romona/
5 Danita Harris/8 Stacey Bell/19Sharron Reed(ghetto) Wayne Dawson on FOX 8 Morning News, but I thought the same thing about Cleveland as well too
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Is Wayne Dawson the Black guy that wears a lot of make up? Hey, what happened that Wilma Smith left 5 for 8 in the early 90s? I would mistake her for Linda Evans. I've got to check out this Sharron Reed to see what's up with sista. lol
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Yes he does wear alot of make-up and he on the morning news on FOX 8, and there a youtube clip where he anchor with Donna when she was in Cleveland. Wilma does look like Linda Evans, but not sure what went down with her leaving 5 for 8 in 1994, could of been money but I'm find out what went down. Sharron Reed got into a fight with anotha sista at NBC10 in Philly and next thing you know she was in Cleveland. Then she did a story about art and she was naked and then ended up on Letterman
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Nothing wrong with the make-up, just noticed. lol Sharon seems audacious. She must have connections. lol Doesn't seem to mind putting a bad reputation out there, for she can always get a job.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive but i thought the same thing about the make -up too, because it thick like butter on his face, but Sharon has a good agent, and I heard that she dated Donovan McNabb when she was in Philly too, but that was back in the day
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Hey sometimes you have to sleep around to stay in the game. lol (Sharon & McNabb).

@applesauce2100 LOL! I can't really comment on that one. She'd better becareful trickin it because some guys get it and go crazy!!! LOL!
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive U know Peggy has a reputation with her at NBC Kansas City, Miami, Memphis. There was always a story about Ms. Peggy, but didn't she carry WMC #1 status on her back. I always heard how she brag about being #1. I know Raycom got Bill Applegate to WOIO-CBS19 and brough that in your face style to Cleveland and with CBS lead-ins helped CBS 19 11pm news beating WEWS/WJW/WKYC. in 1988 I know Brenda move to ATL @WAGA. Kim took Brenda's job but came back. Mearl seem to work well with Joe Burch
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 they wanted a lightskinned woman well there was Brenda and Kim, so they didn't want a chocolate girl like Mearl, but she seems like a down to earth woman. Joe Burch seems to have a lot of women next to him LOL but Kim Hindrew seems nice but she was the "queen" Didn't she married Mason Granger? Also what about Jane Segal who was on the weekend news and moved to midday news? She seem to have gotten the shaft? Wouldn't she have been Brenda's first choice replacement and Kym Clark?
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 If you get a chance, watch Mearl's poise, posture and delivery. Her own air presences rivals Donna Davis. We both know how she was popular, inspite of deteriorating ratings during her era. Besides Mearl, isn't strange how all the female anchors at WMC usually do 5-8 year stints and then leave. Watchout Ursela. Yes, Kim married Mason Granger (lucky lady). How do you think she was able to leave and come back? Jane Segal wasn't main anchor material. Kym Clark is good, but skin color
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Mearl & Claudia are top notch ladies, but tell me what you thoughts Donna Davis, Pam McKevely and going back to Pam Crittendon on 3 in the 80s/90? Also what was the deal with Jane Segal? She seem to be poised and I've seen the old youtube clips? WMC has people who been there along time..Janice Broach that an old dog who been around.
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Donna Davis got lucky and got the position at WMC. When she had come on the seen, Mrs. Davis definitely had star power and was eye-catching (tall and glamorous). Peggy and Applegate snagged her, spoiled her. When that mgmt. left, the economy hit and glory days were over. Donna costed too much money, but would do well in a market like Atlanta, if she can get in. Pam was a premadonna. Her demands and arrogance lead to her release, which turned out to be a good thing for Channel 3.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Donna Davis I like her ,but to me she seem to have a diva personality, and I'm sure Applegate/Peggy/Raycom Media gave her the the moon & the stars but couldn't they just cut her pay instead of cutting her deep in her back. It was sad becaue it was Christmas time, and she was a fan favorite Not sure about the replacemen on the anchor desk, but the audience does move on with time. I can see Donna in ATL. Pam McKevly was another premdonna? Who did she piss off?
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Pam McKelvy had a child and wanted to just anchor in the early evenings at WREG. Jennifer Van Vrancken wanted to anchor at ten with Richard Ransom. When station management declined both request, Jen split and Pam said bye, bye. As far as I know, Pam is raising her child. Jen is at WVUE New Orleans. So this his how Claudia Barr eased into the main anchor woman seat at WREG. Donna is a diva. She was a high stakes gamble for TV5. Somebody was gonna lose in the end.
TV5Alive 1 year ago
@TV5Alive Donna is a star, and she could do a hosting job or something, but them women in ATL don't leave unless their ready. One thing about ATL the vets in that market are there. Monica, Brenda, Amanda Davis, Karyn Greer, Jill Becker, John Pruitt, plus weather & sports anchors. Yes slowly some fresh faces are popping up. However Donna, with her Diva personality she need to tone the make-up and weave down... she still got it going on, but tone it down mama...
applesauce2100 1 year ago
@applesauce2100 Donna is a star, she never really came off as a "newswoman." Show hosting/presenter is definitely her -- after all, Oprah saw it. lol! The make-up and flashiness is Donna. If she would tone it down, she wouldn't be as eye-catching. Yes, it goes with the charisma. ATL is a showcase city. African-American women there are looked at as stars. White men are respected there (and in every other market) because it is the standard for the industry.
