@kevin462 big difference explorers in most areas are not aloud to enter a structure or basically do anything except get tools and equip. vollies (depending on state and dept) are pretty much aloud to do anything
@kevin462 I'm a cadet (same thing as an explorer I think )and basically you can't get go on a structure fire, but you get familiar with SCBA's, turnouts etc... it's really cool

america has many many volunteer fire depts. most paid deptartments are in the citys ie new york philadelphia and LA also there is combination depts. volunteers and paid guys riding together

That includes training fires. Its called NFPA 1403 standards. And one of the requirements is age 18! .

Explorers or FF it's all the same to me. Either way you started as a volunteer and bust your ass to paid position. One word of advice! Sit back and listen to the old timers and always ask questions. Keep your certs up to date, especially your medical and never rely on someone else to keep your training documents. Always make copies! Work hard and keep it simple..
Explorers for sure... Don't call yourselves firefighters when you aren't.
