I didn't realize it, but that sounds a lot like the original Enterprise when Scotty's trying to get them away from the Klingons or something. And, my Non-Faulty 2.8GHz Xserve has never sounded like that. Sheesh!

I guess you tried everything, but did you try unplugging the ethernet port #2 or manually limiting it to 100mbps? Worked miracles on mine.
