To get my driving licence I had to learn my hand signals if my indicating lights were not operating.

Now, if that occasion ever arose, I'm sure that the younger drivers, who didn't have this in their exam, wouldn't have a clue about my waving. So is it a reduntant appreciation?

These days, if your indicators are not working, you are told to get a new car, or fined. Everyone expects everything to work properly.

Are hand signals, if things are momentarily not working, no longer understood?
