How do you disable or get out of this feature? Because right now whenever I boot up my MacBook pro, it automatically go into this safe sleep mode. Another thing that is happening is when I boot up my MBP it shows the log in window but after 5 seconds it just goes to safesleep, how do I fix it?
I don't like the space it takes up on the harddrive so I disable it. Depending on how much ram you have on the computer that is how much space is being written the harddrive. Nice video though!
wouldn't it be funny if he opened it and went "im just gonna wake it up now... oh........ no go away error, i dont like your kind........oh........all my files have been inexplicably deleted..........fucks sake......"
Heh. How long has Windows had hibernate? Windows 2000, for sure. I think NT4 had it and even before that, many Win95 and Win98 laptops had a BIOS-based hibernation-like "Suspend to Disk" feature built right in as long as you had the hibernation partition on the HD. Great job, Apple! Keep innovating!
wow they figured out how to hibernate. good job apple. windows gets frilly visual cues from OSX, and OSX gets concrete useful cues from windows. it all works out.
yeah, it really seems to be that way. It's a shame that doesn't work the same way like with windows. That's one thing that really bothers me about my mac.
Hibernation is nothing new, but the way this is done on the MacBook is. The computer saves the session to the harddrive in case the power should run out. However, if there is sufficient battery (or AC power) it will use the RAM to instantly restore the session.
Shortly, it's a backup feature in case of power failure. You will still use the instant wake-up most of the time, in which case you'll never know this feature exists.
i'd recommend disabling this feature in terminal. i and a lot of other people have lost their hard drive because we didn't know that it was writing to the hard drive after we shut it. the motion sensor does not function while it is writing safe sleep. be warned. apple probably buried the warning, i never saw it.

this is a retarded feature that no one warns you about when you buy the machine. normal people close the machine and immediately move it off their laps or put it away. my 2 gb ram macbook takes over 30 seconds to sleep. moving it while the nifty safe sleep kicks in can destroy the hard. id rather chance losing the sessions ram than all the data on my hard drive. has happened to me and to a lot of other people. thanks for the warning apple.

rayperez777: I totally agree with you. My hard drive just totally crashed on my MacBook Pro 3 days ago. Without any warnings about this feature, I had no idea I could affect the hard drive and lose all my data due to this feature. I love Apple, but this really is a slap on the face of us customers.
I have a question for you. Say someone uses this Safe Sleep feature in their (Intel) Mac and they recently installed Windows XP or Vista. Both of those OS'es also have similar "safe sleep" features. Could a user then do something like boot into Windows and OS X, hold the alt key upon rebooting and switch between OS'es keeping the opened data intact? If I could do this, it would help sway a future purchase decision.
I'm sick of this PC people act their PCs like their gods.If they don't like it then stay away from it or you'll probably will be hated by many.I love my mac so stfu!
We only act like that because all of a sudden Mac users are like Windows sucks! Macs are soo awesome blah blah bet you can't do that on a pc? So we feel like we got to stand up for our Windows<3 They have flaws but Macs do too. I've been on my sisters MacPro w/e and froze while I was simple dling something.
i close my powerbook when its almost out of battery and i can leave it for a few days and as soon i open it up again... it brings everything right back...
my windows pc takes time to boot everything but up again..
still its neat that it sleeps for ages before the whole thing goes dead and you lose everything...
Sounds good, but as far as putting the computer to sleep and briefly taking the battery out, I've been able to do that for years, as a neat feature to aid in replacing the battery while working.
I don't care what anyone says. My Mac rocks. Anyways, Like HH said up there, get a life and shut up about who's better. They're all alike, and yet all so different. I choose mac mianly for stability, cost, and design. if I want a VAIO laptop (which is a huge iBook rip off) it's $1700CDN for the base model. hmm... Now, a new MB base model is $1000CDN... hmm... yup, I'm sticking with mac.
on windows it's called Hibernation.... when you click shut down from the start menu, and the 3 options have appeared, hold the shift button and the stand by button turns into a hibernation button. If this doesn't happen go into Control Panel > Power Options and have a poke about
For Windows users: At the shutdown screen, hold down Shift and select the "Hibernate" option on the far left (it will appear as you hold shift). It's exactly the same thing as what you see here, but for Windows.
blah blah blah. let's see your PC run Mac OS X, oh wait it can't...but wait a sec, my MacBook Pro laptop can run Windows XP, Mac OS X, AND Linux...all at the same time with no rebooting.
Because you can do more things with windows including play games. Windows is easier to get software for and your MACs are horribly overpriced because theuu can get away with being "chicke"
AGAIN, I say. I HAVE WINDOWS ON MY MAC. Yeah all those games for Windows, I'm playin them on my Mac. Derr guess you didn't read that in my first post ay?
Windows is "easier" to get software for ay? I order everything offline anyway since retail stores are ridiculously overpriced, so I find ALL of the software for Macs online that I need.
Overpriced you say. For me to custom build a laptop with 120 Gb, 7200 RPM hard drive, 1 stick of 1 Gb RAM, Intel Duo Core 2.68 Processor, that's 15.4 inch widescreen. It would cost me about $2500. Hey wait a sec, my mac laptop with all of that was $2200 SINCE they give college discounts. Don't believe me? Go price a laptop with all of those things at Dell and Alienware.
